      @@24magiccarrot That’s exactly what I heard too. So the most famous line was really an accident. I’m mad at some guilty people right now and I’m trying to channel my inner Columbo as I try to reel them in. The police certainly wasn’t any help at all surprise surprise. They have only helped my communities if I let them have a place to live to go under cover. That was in the 1980s.
      It’s hard to imagine that Columbo never needed a gun. But I do like that.

      That is most certainly the case, given the fact that what drove her to perform the actions she did, was the prospect of living *under* her brother, the very same way she lived under her father, with no control whatsoever over any aspect of her life. Doesn't excuse her actions one bit but it makes your last sentence very likely.

His screen time is minimal, but he's effective as the strong, silent types in both episodes. It would have been hard to imagine back then, that he'd later become more popular in comedic roles.

    This is one of the handful of episodes where the killer tries to kill Columbo to try to get away. When she pulls the gun on him he says to her what would be the point of killing him with policeman outside. To me that implies in Columbo episodes even if we don't see the police around when he is arresting the killer they are always in the background unseen. It reminds me of the ending of the later William Shatner episode when the police were disguised as cyclists out for exercise.

    While Beth did an about face and became very lecherous towards the second part of the video, she no doubt was one of the more sympathetic villains. I'd put her in the same category as Johnny Cash or Ruth Gordon's characters. The chauvanism and verbal abuse heaped on her by not just her brother but parents as well could only lead to such a destructive act. Plus, both the brother and mother seemed like they got some sadistic pleasure out of the cruelty put on her. It's not clear if the murder was deserved, but later on when she puts the mother in her place, well that certainly was merited. If only these people had treated Beth with the proper respect then none of this would have happened.

    I absolutely love this episode. The problem is it should have only taken 12 minutes to resolve the case as Peter (Leslie Nielsen) would have remembered that night he heard the shots before the alarm. It wouldn't have taken a talk with Columbo at a bar because he would have testified at the inquest. No way would he have not included the "shots before the sound of the alarm" in any statement he had made with police.

    • @patrickjohnson5658
      @patrickjohnson5658 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You would think so. The only thing I can think of is initially Columbo did not suspect her of murder so he accepted her story her alarm had gone off and she shot what she thought was an intruder, so he didn't ask Peter the question which came first. It was only later when he started suspecting her, he got the idea she was lying and she shot her brother first then turned on the alarm to make it look like a tragic accident.

He wouldn't be expecting to hear a burglar alarm and shots. It was later only when he was in a calm state in the bar and at Colombo's prompting he really began to think about it.

    In real life, such a rich person, with a good enough lawyer, will have her free the same night. All they have is her boyfriend's word for the sequence of events. All she needs to say is, she was planning on dumping him, and now suddenly he remembers the shots before the alarm?
    She'll probably end up with all his money too, after suing him for "slander". After she sued the police department for false arrest, of course.
    Columbo's case would just end up making her even richer than she already was. Sadly that's the reality of real life. The rich just keeps on getting richer, no matter what they do. Everybody's equal under the law, it's just that some are more equal than others.

    • @warrenholmar1129

      Columbo was never about sending the person to prison. It was about finding the killer. Often there was very little evidence. There is actually a video on TH-cam that states "do not talk to the police even if you are innocent" a conviction can come from just saying the wrong thing to a police officer.

      I was thinking the same thing- all she had to do was stick with her story- she was awakened by the alarm, saw the curtains moving, grabbed her gun and shot the guy.
