I was BRIEFLY his MD (Dec'88 at the Sahara), and I can safely say he was the funniest cat I ever worked with...as funny offstage, but kind, and warm...had no contact with him for awhile, called him about a jazzfest i was putting together like 12yrs later, and he remembered me like no time had passed...the real deal!
My good buddy was a trombone player (Ron S.) in LV for about 18 years. He transitioned into real estate after the strike in the mid 1980's. He said that he saw the writing on the wall when one of the big show rooms remodeled and put the band in an enclosed room with video monitors. The general public can't tell if it's live or a tape. Anyway, he said that working with Pete was always a blast and the band loved it. A musicians' comedian. He's one of my favorites!
Barbutti was a talent! Most people watching that didn't realize how good he was. Hard to realize that even airing today with today's audience. That's highbrow stuff. Too great!
Pete is one of a kind. Used to come into the las vegas musician's union club and sit in w the band playing. He did an incredible interview this summer on jazz conversations in miami. Probably on utube
Thanks for posting this!! I laughed so much, I had tears in my eyes! It's probably because I've played trumpet in a band since jr. high school, around 1965, and I can relate to that experience of sitting there like that. Thankfully I got to play lead sometimes. But watching Pete again was a JOY. Thank you again,1BarbuttiFan, for posting it.
I first saw him do this bit on TV in the '60s on Merv Griffin's show. It's just as funny now as it was then. Thanks for posting it. I've been searching for it on TH-cam for a long time.
@Scimonetti Even the little details, like when he gets jarred awake by the saxes at 2:54. I've either seen or done everything that he did (well, apart from huffing!). Cracks me up every time, even after maybe twenty viewings this week.
Always loved Pete Barbutti, very funny and original. Where is his Musical Broom routine? He was on the TS, I was on the floor laughing so hard when it first aired, I haven't seen it since.

I met in Milwaukee at Festa Italiana when I used to drive for Festa. I drove him several times. What a nice man and very funny.
Jazz's answer to Victor Borge!
Pete is the "best"...I've had the pleasure of drumming with him many times!
He’s my grandpa
Really?
No.
Who isn't?
He's also my grandpa
Mine too!
Pete is superb! That is so true about Bandleaders and fourth trumpet players!
you have to be a musician to really appreciate this its really funny!

I, too, played trumpet in my junior high band------1963 - 65......I was as bad at it in life as Pete pretended to be in this bit.
Proof that true comedy is based on reality.
This video never gets old!
BOY - do I MISS this MAN ♥♥♥♥♥♥
Number 14 in the Red Book is my favorite tune!
I've watched 100 times and laugh every time!
Pete was my favorite back in the 60 s. I did see him in vegas some years ago.
Barbutti is OUTSTANDING! Thanks for posting.
Man is starting a riot with the band and I wouldn't have it any other day.

I love his laugh 6 min in. "Hey I just did something kinda cool!"
This guy looks like a Doonesbury cartoon..!
That’s pretty funny haha
Love Pete's humor !
Pete, you’re a Stinking genius. The band I played in, the leader had a V. W. Bus
*This* is one of those routines that makes necks hurt from laughter!
Saw him live in Reno ‘87 he was sooo silly even then!
I know it all too well!
Remember him and this bit WELL !
Love it very funny, very true....got the t shirt.

He's still performing in Las Vegas at the Wolf Theater..
Always loved Pete Barbutti, very funny and original. Where is his Musical Broom routine? He was on the TS, I was on the floor laughing so hard when it first aired, I haven't seen it since.
I remember that too!
It's funny because it's TRUE.
The best humor ...is the truth ....right?
I like his routine of talking to the janitor with a wrench on the radiator...
I miss these times
Never played a gig with him but I miss him. Next, I'm going to try to find the video of Pete playing the piano with his nose.
A very underrated comedian!!
What is his rating, and what should it be?
@@JiveDadson A-plus!!
Very funny and talented man
I've only just realised I was in that band, but wait there all the same !
Absolutely classic!!!
Просто супер!!!!!!!!!!!!))))))
Absolute genius!
Love this guy!!!
So funny - thanks for posting.
THANKYOUVERYMUCH *OUUUUUUUUUGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH* THANKYOUVERYMUCH
Was he the inspiration for the lead character in the Doonesbury comic strip?
That music the band played when he came out was the same music they played when Tom Dreesen would appear back in the 70s.
I love that the bass player gets lost.
I think I knew this guy!
Does anyone know where I can find Pete Barbutti telling his snail in a Cadillac joke?
A J Sherer .Did that story ever surface? Like to hear it. Tom
Does anybody know what tune he starts to play at 4:07 ? That looks like a beautiful tune even though it's out of context. Also, a hilarious act!
Sounds like "I get a kick out of you."
It's "I'm in the Mood for Love." Great old standard.
I can't hear that tune without hearing Frasier Crane singing it in the tub.
I hear Bugs Bunny singing it. He might have been in the bathtub, too...
It's known as a "counter melody."
Superb.
Genius.
Much wow
We went to the same barber !!!!
It's spelled **fourth** but would most likely be marked "4th trumpet" or even "Trumpet IV" maybe with trumpet abbreviated as "Tpt" on the parts.
Pretty damn funny, y'all.
I’m my own grandpa.
Genial
predecessor of mnozil brass?
awe some !
at 3:20 cracking me up
He used to tell a great joke about a snail buying a Cadillac
.
Funny !
- JF
Exactly the same act as he did on the Woody Herman show in '85
Still funny tough!
ED KOTLAR/CONTRAST!!!
