He wasn't making fun of himself, he was finally letting go of all the pain and suffering he'd been holding on to for so long. Finally forgiving his mom. Having a kid changed his life and made him see that there is something to live for, someone to live for. He finally allowed God to clean up his mind and heart. Depression is real and it's a fight. He said the 30 years line at the end 31 times because he just turned 31. So it was 30 years of old NF, depression, pain, suffering, no hope in sight but year 31 is a new light, a new chapter, a new start. NF is hands down the G.O.A.T.

It's not him poking fun at his old self. It's more about his "real" journey with his mental health and how he has grown . You can follow his progression from album to album. When his mix tape came out and even slightly before that you could see everything lining up to come out with a much more positive outtake in life in general. His connection with his fans and being that voice for those that can't or don't know how to put into words the troubles they may be experiencing and more importantly how to push past those negative thoughts that their are people all over with similar problems. Even you where talking about how dark his music is but you can go back all the way to therapy session and even before even with it's dark "atmosphere the underlying message was in achieving a positive attitude and mental health.

This song plays ode to all of his past albums, moods, feelings, thoughts, songs, and past videos.
The "my album" in baking voices, is all the parts of him that he's accepted and shown still saying "I'm here and you're not forgetting us"
In previous songs he says "I'm looking for the map to hope, have you seen it?" And he's holding up a blank "map" and taking advice from his past.
When he's shoved into the mansion, it's straight ode to that song, how the different floors are different levels off his psyche. In the basement you see his darkness and all the balloons (symbols of the burdens he's always carrying around him)
In the other room is the cage that's in several videos as well as the "senior nf" featured in the video called I'm sorry where he dies over and over as himself while the old man just watches passively... the fact that the old man is holding the keys to his own prison is yet another concept of being trapped in your own past.
Then, on the peak, he mentions holding his son to windows and never looking out them I'm loss, as well as says I forgive you momma - both from past songs and videos talking of waiting for the parent who never arrives for visits and never forgiving his mother for (suicide I think).
Last... I think the flashes between white and dark nf at the end battle is admitting he is still human and the darkness is never completely gone.
Just my... breakdown on the way the video and lyrics run.

His “brooding, black persona” is not something just for his music or him to get famous or something that most musicians nowadays putting on. This is a reflection of his music, and his music reflects what’s he’s going through, all the baggages that he’s carrying is bleeding off from his music, his songs.
I never thought that being “serious” is something off-putting. He is literally singing/rapping his heart out, what most of us going through and relate to him, him being “serious” and being REAL is what makes him standout, which is very rare for a musician nowadays, from the ocean of sex, money, drugs, bitc**s, swearings fortunately we have NF.

I cry a little everytime I listen to this song....I have gone through hell in life, and when I needed to move on and pick myself up, he came out with this song....He isn't making "fun" of himself. He's in a battle with himself. The part of him that wants to keep him down. The part of him that won't let him heal. I fight myself every day and he has helped me find my footing and I can't even begin to explain how much this dude means to me.

been an NF fan for so long and this song just gave me another reason to love him. He is one of the only artists I know who has character development. That alone makes him amazing.

He was not taking himself too seriously. The whole albums, timeline and adding to that the videos and which songs he has picked to make a video from it, is the clear process of healing and how his life have been a process of learning, forgiving, moving forward not by just doing it, doing it with the intention of being better for him and his beloved ones :).

The way he shows he's evolving and growing. Letting go of past pain and troubles yet they keep trying to creep back into his mind. When he says the 30 years lines he says 30 years 30 times.

The black NF isn’t really his past self it’s more of his Fear (in black) VS his Hope (in white) this visually is probably one of his best clouds is beautiful with the transitions but this ties the visuals with the message soooo well!

This song came out when everything in my life fell apart at the same time, and I was in one of the darkest points in my life. Now I'm in college, NF is my favorite artist of all time, and when I make it big he is def getting a shout out as the man who straight up saved my life.

'is that a music video or a freaking movie?' LITERALLY the words NF uses in The Search

Yep, and what NF said in The Search was "I don't know if I'm making movies or music videos" He's very talented in many different aspects, and he did all of it while coping with his past.
