hello, really good video it gave me the inspiration to write my bachelor thesis about Dubois. :) what literature did u use for this video? Kind Regards
Edit: I mixed up Pierre-Max Dubois with Theodore Dubois Dubois is actually a well known name among classical saxophonists as he wrote a saxophone concerto and saxophone quartet that are among the standard repertoire for saxophonists
Oh that's really cool I didn't know that! That's definitely Theodore Dubois and not Pierre-Max Dubois right? Given how conservative Theodore Dubois was I would be very surprised if he composed for the sax.
@@zer-mela You're absolutely right haha, a different Dubois, my mistake. This makes more sense, I remember when I first heard the concerto it sounded modern sounding to me, so when I first read that Dubois wasn't a big fan of Ravel I was surprised, since I find Ravel much easier to listen to.
The thing with Dubois is how his bloody-mindedness also caused the counter-reaction to be so extreme. Without Dubois, there is no dogmatic serialism of Boulez et al. He was a pretty decent composer, however; I really like all three of his symphonies.
Dubois wasn't reactionary his whole life. Listen to Philip Brunelle playing TD's 1923 piano piece "Hour of Dreaming" -- it's pretty Impressionist: th-cam.com/video/k9ifYa97OJo/w-d-xo.html (starts at six minutes into the video)
This was wonderful to listen to, thanks so much for sharing. I hadn't come across this piece when writing the script, and maybe if I had heard it I would have been kinder to Dubois. I guess it shows that people across their lives are always changing, and to paint them with broad generalisations will almost always fail. 💚 thanks for commenting
Dear Jo, I was born in Reims near the basilique Sainte Clothilde, this is not the right picture! Thank you anyway for your interest in french composers
@@zer-mela thanks haha! Btw Im loving these videos on super esoteric stories like dubois, the french organ scene is filled with these, check out Louis Vierne!
Well Ravel and Debussy had a...complicated relationship. Originally Debussy was a huge supporter of Ravel, especially when Ravel's string quartet came out, but over time they grew apart, and their followings started to develop a rivalry between groups. It was very Cardi vs Nicki

Great video, as always. I'm definitely interested in a video on Saint-Saëns
Thank you! I was on the fence but now you've persuaded me to do it
I've started to play guitar, keyboard and join a choir online during covid so thank you for making these videos, educating me in a fun way xox
I'm loving these! Feed us more!
Got lots on the way 👉
If you would like a topic to discuss, here is a question which haunts all art: How can you tell if a particular piece of art is any good?
Great idea! Added to the list
