Earlier in episode 1 Hinata learned that Ushijima plays for the Japanese U19 national team what have impressed him a lot. Because Ushijima is an official representative of his nation and Hinata is just too excited he simply calls him "Japan" 😄

Let me give you some context here, Tanaka's full name is "Ryuunosuke Tanaka" the "Ryu" part means "Dragon" in Japanese, the other guy's full name(Tanaka 2.0) is "Taketora Yamamoto", the "Tora" part means "Tiger" so in Japanese folklore(as well as in other asian cultures) they are "rivals" but at the same time they can't be separated like the Yin and Yang, and that is why they are so similar :)

The name of the second episode is "Direct Sunlight" and it refers to the comment that Yachi made after she spent lunch tutoring Hinata and Kageyama. She said, "I feel like I was left out in direct sunlight." Remember Hinata's name is includes the character for "sun" (hi 日）and while his sunny personality is endearing, like the sun it can also be so intense it's painful for more introverted characters like Yachi or Kenma. So Yachi's reaction "I feel like I was left out in direct sunlight" means that she feels a bit like someone who's gone to the beach and stayed out in the sun too long: a bit dizzy, a bit woozy, a bit faint.

The reason Hinata called Ushiwaka "japan" is because Ushiwaka was accepted onto the world youth team representing Japan
also, ushiwaka = ushijima wakatoshi
To add to this: in Japanese, Japan is called "Nihon", so when Shoyo literally says "JAPAN", it has an international flavor to it.

Yeah Ushijima is one of the top 3 spikers in Japan and was a part of the U21 Japanese team so that's the reason behind the "JAPAN!" scene. It's actually been explained before but Vic isn't that good with new characters so she either forgot or thought it didn't matter. It's fine but still gives the impression that she isn't that into it. Not that she isn't. She seems hyped for the show.
In Ushiwaka's case though, he's actually not being cocky, he's just a natural airhead and speaks his mind frankly, and he has skills to back up what he says. Also, high school sports is really important and gets a lot of attention in Japan. High school baseball for example is similar to pro baseball in the US where it's broadcasted on TV and is watched nationwide annually as an event.

About mental health in haikyuu.. it’s one of the many aspects in which this series excels at. It depicts the struggles without it being downplayed, token or exaggerated but really grounded and realistic. There’s not a story arc in haikyuu in which you don’t feel seen and it’s just so beautiful. I think you’ll definitely like what the story has to offer!!

Just an explanation regarding how Nishinoya addressed Tanaka's sister. Nishinoya did call her Onee-san, which is "older sister". It was a way to show respect towards her as if she was also his older sister. So it's not so much blood related, but a sentiment related thing.

I never considered it but yes Yachi is gonna be youre favorite. Shes very relatable for anxiety/neurotic behavior feels, that scene where she’s mesmerized by kiyoko into saying yes without hearing a word is priceless.
so basically, "japan" is actually ushijima (last name) wakatoshi (first name). but they call him "ushiwaka" because like- you know. "ushi" from "ushijima" and "waka" from "wakatoshi". but shoyo called him "japan" because he's japan's youth representative.
Hinata's nickname for Ushijima "Japan" is because he's an all japan national team pre player, which is basically a training camp that they recruit highschoolers for so they can train to be possible national level players after school. The reason why japan puts so much emphasis on high school sports is because high school isn't mandatory like in the US, so it's like junior college league and if you don't make leaps and bounds in middle, forget about being recognized in high or college. It's super different from over here.

The dub is it's own magic. I feel that after Vic watches this, she really should try to watch the dub. People bitch because they're used to the original but when you watch the dub from the onset, it just has it's own charm because the voice actors put their own spin on it. I've watched the sub 4 times and the dub 5 times... I can't work on my computer while reading (even if I've watched the show enough to remember context along with keywords) so the dub is just a great way for me to smile while working.

The new character, Ushiwaka, is part of the National all Japan U-19 team. Which is why Hinata exclaimed “Japan” when he saw him. He is one of the top 3 aces in the country and is the team that beat Oikawa in the finals in the season 1 tournament

I love the pre-commercial clip (20:41) where Hinata is grabbing his hair and Kageyama is looking at his hands... Neither is blaming the other for the miss... They're focused on their own performance and thinking about what they can improve.

If you notice the first words of this season "A high, high wall stands in front of me" is a reference to what he said on S1 EP1. Referring to the physical wall of blockers and how its hard for him to get past it because he is short. But also the metaphorical wall that he has to climb as he needs to work harder and put more effort than anyone else BECAUSE he is short. The story is beautiful because it emphasizes that volleyball is a team game and you are NOT alone, these people will help you overcome these walls. Haikyuu teaches us that even in life, when you have a lot of hurdles or tribulations that we are NOT alone and we can seek help. We do not need to break the walls ourselves but also it's on you to still put in the effort, work hard, so that one day you can see past it, high in the sky, flying above this 'wall'.
Why I noticed that quote is because, that was the reason why I watched Haikyuu. First 5 minutes of season 1 episode ,1I was given such a poetic quote and was like daaaaaaaaaaaaaamn lash gooo, resonating with me personally as I grew up being the 'short, small, fragile' person that doesn't get selected for sports whilst having the competitive spirit that made me want to overcome such prejudice. I know you said you had some moments of mental issues and I often cringe when people tell me "it's going to be okay, i know how you feel" when I'm in those moods, but still truth of the matter is you got people around you who can help. Like tsukki :)
The new characters, Saeko who is Tanaka's sister & Yachi-san who'll take care of the team, will play a key role as supporters in the 2nd season.
Especially Yachi-san is growing up as a novice "equipment manager" for Karasuno. The name of "manager" in Japanese doesn't mean a head coach or a field manager.

Victoria, you don't have to worry about seeing a 'grown up' Hinata for now - everything that's been animated thus far is still within Hinata's and Kageyama's first year at Karasuno! So unless you decide to pick up the manga, you're in the clear for now.
"Japan" is just Hinata's nickname for Ushijima Wakatoshi (otherwise known as Ushiwaka to most of the other players) because his first encounter of him is in that magazine Volleyball Monthly where it was announced he was selected to be part of the nation's youth team. Hinata saw that Ushiwaka's jersey had the word "JAPAN" on it, and that's why when Hinata first sees him, his instincts just shouted out "JAPAAN"

Middle school in Japan ends in 9th grade actually, so by the time Kageyama and Shouyo went to Karasuno, both of them are 15 going on 16 years old. They graduadte after 12th grade so by that time they will be 17-18 years old.

Hi Victoria! I'm so glad we've made it to season 2! I was just curious though- there's an extra episode between seasons 1 and 2 that features Nekoma! It provides some insight on this season so it's your choice if you would want to react to it, but I just wanted to mention it as a heads up! Have fun, this is a great season just like the other ones!

Ushiwaka has Japan on his jacket because he is on the youth national team! Yachi is amazing, and I’m excited for you to see the next episode! If you’re interested in watching another sports anime, Yuri on Ice is really groundbreaking for addressing depression, anxiety, and to a lesser degree binge eating in figure skating, and it also broke ground in how it represents queer relationships. (Though there are some not great jokes about weight gain in relation to figure skating in the first few episodes) 💗💜💙

Regarding team culture in Japan, there’s a video on YT where Erik Shoji watches high school Japanese volleyball teams, and he’s amazed that they could run the kind of quick attacks that he only started encountering himself during his college days in the US. It’s quite plausible that a top volleyball school like Shiratorizawa would have scouted a setter like Kageyama and denied his application based on his attitude problems at the time.
I don't think a school would "deny" any student in that way. In this case, they didn't feel the necessity for contacting him or giving him ”Sports Recommendation" (which would exempt him from entrance exams) seeing his junior high performance, & so Kageyama had to opt for trying to enter via the usual route & ended up failing due to low scores.
I've been watching from the beginning of your journey in Haikyuu and honestly, I'm so proud of where you've progressed in terms of learning names and really understanding why people love anime so much! Thank you for the awesome reactions and keep up the great work!

Ushijima, Oikawa, Kuroo all the big guys are actually third years. Just like Asahi and Daichi are fully developed third years. While Hinata and Kageyama are first years still going through puberty. That is why you see such difference.
About Ushiwaka, his name is Ushijima wakatoshi! He is a 3rd year so kinda looks big! He was in under 19 Japan team! (As seen in the magazine)! So when hinata saw him he just said what came to his mind "Japan" (He remembered him wearing the Japanese team jersey!)
