i like to imagine that axis has his "ticked off meter" or whatever it was, and the more you piss him off, the more he opens his eye if it's fully open then he just instakills you on the spot by hitting you into the lava

I would imagine that the shield used in this fight would actually be able to deflect Clover's Soul Beam, and Axis's strategy from the moment he realizes that would be to try and bounce your shots back at you while sending attacks at you to encourage you to shoot towards him with his attacks now being destructible.

That's when he begs for mercy.

He failed his purpose, but he will not fail any more, even if it results in his own termination, if the entirety of Steamworks has to come crashing down just to end Clover, to ensure no other monster gets hurt because of them, then Axis will make it'll all come crashing down. Also I would've expected the colors to be orange and/or whiteish gray, because, you know, boilers(fire) and steam.
