This is the kind of photography content I was looking for. Eloquently presented, emotional but not sentimental, and not too academic. Thank you.

It's clear that you are proud of the production value of your videos - and you should be. The fit and finish of your post production work and the attention to detail from the opening credits through to the closing remarks is fantastic. Thanks for putting so much into your work. You're the student that is ruining the bell curve for all of the others by working so much harder. I love it!

One of my all time favourite “artists”. His personal backstory and context of how he works is what really elevates his work to another level.. personally, it gives me such deep introspective on our priorities and the way we live. While also embodying what the original purpose of “photography” is, to document and reveal to, expand the viewers understanding and awareness of what is going on around us.
Once again.. thank you for your hard work!

Hello! Thank you so much for your comment and I would 💯agree with you because his photography touches so many aspects of the world that it brings awareness, understanding and unique perspectives onto the table and I personally love that he travelled so much and captured so much of the world, shows a lot of compassion, thank you for watching!

I've owned my copy of "Exiles" for many years and after failing numerous times in my attempts to explain to others why this is such an important photo book I asked myself what exactly it is that makes it stand out. And I think you're right: it's the details and their relation to each other. I thought it's a certain mood in the images, created by the harsh contrasts, dark tones and the melancholy expressions in the faces of the people. But more than anything else it's the details that make the difference, some marginal, some dominant, some strange, weird, fragile, banal or highly symbolic. They're what makes us look closer and longer and what gives the photos a narrative depth. Thanks for the lesson and best wishes from Germany! I'm always glad when I see there's a new video of yours! Looking forward to the next one!

You know that feeling you get imagining, like in a dream, that you dust something off, lift the lid and realise its a chest full of treasure? As your heart pounds you unpack what is inside, one artefact at a time, with great care and attention. Despite having had an interest in photography for a long time, I have missed the opportunity - why?, I don't know - to see your videos until now. I watched the first yesterday, and have watched a few since. Your work is on a very special level - you are clearly both a practitioner, who understands the struggles of working with the medium across many formats, and also a deep thinker, an intellect, capable of approaching the subject with sensitivity, insight and compassion. Finally your work conveys the skill of a good editor, film producer - including all that comes with that . I'm just so impressed. Right now I am in binge mode, 'skimming' if you will. But when I have watched each video I know that I will be back to rewatch and take in what I have missed. So, many thanks Tatiana, for the gift of these videos, and I wish you all the best.

This is such a good analysis/vulgarisation of Koudelka and his work. I loved Koudelka's work at first sight, I could never put my finger on what it is that draw me in. But with your video, I feel I understand the man a little more, I have a better perspective on his work. It is the inside out perspective that he brings that I find interesting. I watched many videos on Koudelka, yours is by far the best.

Tatiana, I came across you from your TH-cam video on Saul Leiter several years ago. I like your video and channel and research. This evening I decided to watch your video presentation about Joseph Koudelka. I have very many favorite photographers for various reasons all of who's photos have left a deep impression on me one such photographer is Joseph kudelka whose work I came to know maybe in 1981 or 2 when I was learning photography and I was only 13 or 14 then I came across his work in the time life photography series I think the works of the Masters or something and I remember his Stark photos of the gypsies in black and white and it was the one famous photo of him photographing his watch and other photos with the tanks and I like those photos and I will somehow surprised by the choice of the lens and I noticed that a very wide angle had been used and recently I tried to find out which lens could I have been using and I learned that it was a Varex 25 mm. Today again I was trying to see which would be my favorite focal length and somehow I can never quite decide between 20 mm 24 mm 28 mm 35 mm and 50mm as a main lens or as the only lens most of the time I gravitate towards 24 mm because sometimes I feel the 28 is not wide enough and most of the time the 20 mm is a bit too wide for day to day use so I'm still trying to figure out which one I prefer more but thinking of all these things reminded me of kudelka and his 25 mm and I was thinking of something to watch this evening on TH-cam but not strictly a slideshow or a talk I do watch those and sometimes I enjoy watching lectures by photographers particularly photographers like Google himself and even Salgado I enjoy their talks and even ragu Rai but this evening in in trying to find out my favorite sort of focal length view I decided to watch something with the work of and this is one of the reasons I decided to watch your presentation about him which I enjoyed so much and you've done a lot of research keep up the good work and it was very enjoyable for me this is something that I can even watch again it is so well made and so enjoyable thank you for making the effort to produce it.

First of all, thank you for your ongoing production of lovely videos that explore photography as an art, as a cultural commentary, as well as a personal journal of sorts. I appreciate your work because there are so few others on TH-cam who share this sort of exploration, but there are even fewer women who share this sort of content on TH-cam and on social media in general, which is sad. That said, you do an excellent job and keep me coming back for more of your videos. They are treasures of insight and inspiration.
OK, onto Koudelka, White only discovered a couple of months ago after a fellow Tumblr photographer recommended him. Thank you for creating this lovely overview of his life and work. As a refugee myself, I found it touching, not only because of the power of his work and his story, but also because of the way you presented it. I was especially moved by your opening disclaimer, because as an "other" who also does not quite fit neat "other" categories, I understand the power of words and the power of naming.
Finally, absolutely loved Koudelka's lifelong journey of taking photos for himself, of taking photos that made sense yo him and his standpoint. Powerful stuff.
BTW, have I said thank you? Thank you.

    • @TatianaHopper
      @TatianaHopper  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Hello hello! First of all thank you so much for your extremely generous and kind words I truly appreciate them and I wanted to say that it seems like you really get the essence of my videos like it’s a mix but a very conscientious one.
I have to say reading your comment couldn’t have been more timely as this morning I was heavily criticised by someone who couldn’t understand the meaning of my disclaimer, I ended up deleting the thread of comments because honestly that person will never come even close to understand the power words can carry. Having had experiences myself where I felt what othering was like I told myself I would never turn a blind eye to it and with that being said I feel an immense empathy for all humans specially for those who know about the importance of words, of behaviours such as othering and are close to understand the meaning of living a life.
I will continue to do my best in terms of producing meaningful and helpful content not just from a professional photography point of view but also one that considers relevant self awareness and personal growth. All the very best to you and I hope life brings you nothing but the best 🕊

@@TatianaHopper Thank you for your lovely words and thoughts, for taking time to reply. I am thoroughly convinced that you do your best and put your heart, soul, and intellect into your videos in ways that are creative, educational, and fun to watch.
And yes, some people just do not understand, cannot grasp (or because of their personal experiences, deny) the pain words and preconceived notions inflict, but taking a gentle yet ongoing approach to revealing and healing such pain is crucial.
      Thank you.

I really enjoyed this video Tatiana. Your videos are always educational and I like how they show what lengths people are prepared go to for their photographic passion. The resulting images often being quite unique and emotive as in this case.👍

Thank you for your grace in sharing the work of important photographers like Josef Koudelka. Keep up the great work.

Would love to see more on "Heart of Darkness". I find it fascinating how he manages to build something of interest for humans without “human interest” (without explicitly showing any humans). It's just human traces that we are shown, and this seems like a very effective way of showing what truly happens with those landscapes.
