Music and Meaning - Why Musicology Matters

  • This has been a recurring theme on the channel lately. I wanted to share my thoughts on meaning as a fundamental part of the musical experience (almost universally), and the role that musicologists and ethnomusicologists play in the meaning making process. If nothing else, this is an existential manifesto on why musicology is important in response to those who would say "music speaks for itself" or questions the purpose of any musicology at all.
Let me know if you want to see more videos like this (once I defeat the auto-focus final boss)

A bunch of what you're saying here is why I went looking into the old podcast episodes yesterday. I, as a consumer of music, wanted to build more on that relationship of how I appreciate and take it in. If you love something, and believe me the relationship I have with what i input into my ears could be defined as that, you give back to it.

Beautifully said, Leigh. And thank you for going back and listening, I like to think that's one of the benefits of doing this kind of music channel - the videos aren't ephemeral and hopefully stay relevant as time goes on :) It's also worth saying it's not only musicologists that do musicology - any time you and I start geeking out together, that's musicology, in a way!

I crave more time and outlets to talk about these things but I also realize it isn't for everyone. Many times when I go down the rabbit hole about where a lot of musical concepts come from and why they are connected I can see the moment that my student's eyes glaze over and know it is time to stop. Building a network of people who want to delve deeper and find more is an essential role that you play. Without it we would all hit a wall. Nobody can know everything but there is always someone who knows more than we do. As a community we know a LOT! Keep up the good work

I love your emphasis that it's really a community that makes meaning. Sure, someone can guide it or just light a fire under that community, but it's ultimately the result of many people coming together. I feel that on eyes glazing over btw - pretty much half my music appreciation elective does the same xD

Your words and your work are doing wonders for the world. There is a big difference between hearing background noise and actually listening to music. And there is also a big difference between listening to music and to dive in to it.
    Great video as always

      “Does musicology matter?”
“I mean, that desiccated oregano plant could probably do it…”
