My First Altar. Whether you're on a budget or just starting witchcraft, this set of tips for Beginner Witches will help you in your spiritual journey. As Wiccans and Pagans, exercising our Magick is essential and the altar is the sacred space where that will happen.
How to set up a Witch Altar at Home?
Setting up my altar: The most important thing is that you feel free to decorate, explore, re-arrange, and above all, have fun when creating your witch altar, which is a never-ending process. Your altar is unique to you and nobody else should be telling you what is right or wrong about it.
Before adding any new item to your altar, learn about its meaning. Ask yourself why you like it and how you can use it.
What to put on my altar?
Wiccan Altar Layout. Altar Elements:
• A bowl of sand, dirt or a plant on the North end of your altar to represent the Element Earth.
• A stick of incense in the East can symbolize the Element Air.
• A candle or some charcoal in the South for Fire.
• A glass or bowl with Water will be facing West.
Altar Ideas Sacred Space:
- Avoid clutter
- Have an altar cloth
- Include personal religious or spiritual symbols
- Get lots of candles & candle holders
- Incense and incense burners
You can light the incense and candles before a meditation, during a devotional, a prayer, to start your day or before going to bed. Just make sure you don’t leave candles burning unattended.

I have seen variations on which direction to place the altar, east or north, and if facing east, do we still set up the 4 cardinal points the same placement or rotate them one space over to their direction..thank you
