Whenever I enter into the house of the Lord to give and offer Him praises and to worship..we move as the spirit directs us....the song leader has a great part cause when we start praising Him we do get in the that spirit we forget all the things we have been through in the previous week..as the songs says (you dont know what He has done for me) so i say that to say some might clap or sing a little louder cause they happy they made it to the week of toils and entered into the house of the Lord to be restored one more time...I love a cheerful song leader....He kinda sets the mood for the church then the elder brings it on it....I love COC thank you Lord to giving us the chance to obey the gospel.
We have the right to praise him moreso, than any other religious sector, for we wear his name. Clapping and praising the Lord is not designated or copyrighted or patented or restricted for any denomination or non denomination. Giving God Praise and thanking him for his goodness and mercy is a way of acknowledging him.
I am a member of the COC for 40 years and I do not fancy the clapping. However We're camping on this temporary land (earth) while we are journeying toward the promise land (our heavenly Jerusalem or spiritual Canaan). Sing with the spirit and with the UNDERSTANDING!
did you come to Texas city to Westward Street church of Christ one year. i wasn't there, but i should would have loved to meet you paul Williams. in Christian love, Robin Benn
Agreed clapping is merely a way of expressive joy!! Sometimes we make laws where Christ has no restrictions...I saw bro Dorian and he does bring such powerful expression and emotion to his singing ..love him
When one considers that it is scriptural to sing those songs that are psalms, hymns and spiritual songs - the latter category can include most anything uplifting that is Christ/God centered. What makes something relevant is contingent upon what it does and means for those who are yet benefitting from it. If this is "naustalgic" for you, that probably means that you are not among the group. Thus for YOU, it might be a youtube novelty, but it is certainly not merely that for others.
Well I'm in the Baptist faith psalms 150 coc judges people forces people to repent Baptist worship God everybody praises God coc sit there looking seditty
Nah, the COC people you've met probably came off as judgemental. But, I think there's parts of the Bible the other churches purposefully omit and it seems kind of questionable. But to answer the question about the song being controversial, nah, it's fine. I think people look more at the melody and how it's performed vs the meaning of the actual lyrics. It's a journey for us to get to Heaven and what we expect upon reaching it. The adlibs and clapping are probably looked down on because they take away from the acapella and seems more flashy and showy. Therefore, people will like the singer more than the song itself. And to that I say to them, when someone comes up and sings the song not as good as someone else, you need to keep that same energy because we're singing to glorify God, not sounds as good as possible.
These dead Europeans she refers to are the Puritans, and if you look them up, you will see that they believed that any kind of comfort was sinful. The restoration movement, though in my opinion the closest to how the original Christians worshipped, still has a little history in the Puritan religion, so we get the aftereffects of that history. It's similar to how black folk are still out here eating pork and lard... we're still feeling the aftereffects of slavery. But overall we've evolved and learned that some expression in worship is human, even normal. We can't be robots for God -that isn't spirit and truth. besides that, church is where some folk go to recharge and restore. Would we rather them be standing, clapping, and throwing up hands in the club?remember in 2samuel how Michal became barren after she went in on David on how he was praising the Lord?..ijs.
Yes sir, we baptist don't mind standing, clapping and shouting. Praising our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. But i never realized that praising God was denominational, for the word says that let everything that has breathe praise ye the lord.
Why? That's your opinion , which you're entitled to! But, what SCRiPTUAL fact can you base it on? Has the spirit ever taken you places you never thought of going?
Tha BEST SONG LEADER OF2000& BEYOND
This brother can sing a hymn like no one else! Love it Brother D. Paul!!!

Ditto everything writer426 said! Thank you both for the comments. That's how we learn.
That’s called being Black and our culture, it has nothing to do with being unscriptual.

Who is He? The Gap Band?
What makes this song unscriptural? I've been hearing it all my life in the COC.

Just letting you all know that I was not trying to be critical when I asked about the word change, just curious.
Why are they saying "camping toward Canaan" rather than "camping in Canaan"?
Maybe cause Israel wasn't IN the land of Cana'an but camping TOWARD it when they were in the wilderness? lol
I've never sang it any other way...
Poetic license
Sounds baptist with all the clapping, throwing up the hands, and standing. 1Cor.14:40 says LET ALL THINGS be done in DECENT and IN ORDER.

The clapping and dancing make it unscripture
unscriptual

They don't worship the lord with instruments that's scriptural psalms v150 saying they're the only church going to heaven
We're is the feeling praising the Lord none clapping SMH
