Please don’t apologise for again featuring the Royal Ballet. I could happily watch them perform anything and everything, especially Nela and Vadim. Did you spot that Alexander Campbell retired last night after performing Manon? Another wonderful RB dancer.
Oh sad day! I’ll miss seeing him on RB video. He seems such a delightful person. I can see him being a candidate for director of RB, if his performance as spokesman on the videos is backed up by other necessary qualities.
Just saw Marianela and Vadim on Wednesday opening Swan Lake and exquisite is exactly the right word and they only seem to be getting better and better! Never apologise for using their videos, I could happy watch them every day!
I was hoping you would choose Vadim and Marianela, and you didn't disappoint. That face! As you observe, their eye contact is beautiful. I Also love how, without breaking character, she often has an expression in her face that seems to say "I just LOVE the next step I'm going to do!" Underrated PDD: Titania and Bottom (wearing an ass's head) in Balanchine's Midsummer Night's Dream, which is coming up here in San Francisco. And Natalia Osipova is coming as a guest for Swan Lake later on. Woo-hoo!
Re: Suggestions for overlooked pas de deux: Kenneth MacMillan's Manon!! There's at least one outstanding pdd in every act, but my personal favourite is Manon and de Grieux's first pdd in Act 1!
I was thinking specifically of the shorter pdd before that one (after Manon and De Grieux meet for the first time.) The bedroom pas de deux is excellent too, though! @@balletfanatic
The viola solo of this pas de deux makes me want to swtich from violin to viola. Delibes is insanely good at making dreamy, glittery, magical melodies. Simply gorgeous, immense yet personal, vulnerable in the most beautiful and valuable way possible. And gee does Marianela and Vadim make the steps and the music that much justice, otherwordly performance T-T❤
This pdd is so beautiful and feels like an open dialogue almost. It's genuine, not rushed, you can feel the affection (both in music and through dancer's performance) yet it's gentle and light. Thank you for opening this one for me, really enjoyed it! Marianela and Vadim are both phenomenal dancers, amazed every time.
Thanks girls; it HAS educated me a lot watching that and I’ll look on more carefully at the ‘quieter’ performances. You are both turning me into a ballet nerd. 😅😅😅
I thought Nela was almost like "look Vadim we did it!" at the point when u were talking about punctuality almost a bit cheeky? It was cute and I don't think I've seen that ending lift before! Beautifully done!
I've watched this pdd sooo many times. Honestly cannot get enough of Nela and Vadim. Thanks for making this. It's not really underrated but would love to see Nikiya and Solor's shades pdd.
I’m always happy to see the RB in any video. Marianela and Vadim are my favourite couple so please don’t apologise for using them. Thank you for the video, it really helped my understanding of the pas-de-deux. I don’t have suggestions for pieces but I’d love to hear your commentary on some of the new(ish) young principals at the Royal ballet. Marcelino Sambé and Myara Magri for example. Do you think they have the potential to become the next ‘Vadim and Marianela’?
I’ve arranged a whole trip to London from where I live in Scotland around Nela and Vadim being in Swan Lake together. Waited until the cast sheet was out and then booked my trip and got my tickets. I’d happily watch them in every single one of your videos!
I almost did this for Don Quixote last October…from the States! Nixed because of $$. Hope neither retires before next season, because $$ be da***d, I’m gonna see Vadim and Nela live!
I haven’t watched a lot of ballet, so I don’t know what I’m looking at on the rare occasions when I do see it, so I appreciate you breaking down the steps and the details that show how special this performance is. However, by watching so closely, I can also see how much strength they need to pull off the movements. When he is walking her around in a circle, the tension between their arms is enormous. And at the beginning of the pdd, I saw her leg wobble, just for a moment. Somehow, I don’t think of these incredible athletes as having any weaknesses. 🤷♀️😄
Hiii! This is unrelated to the video but I have a video suggestion! I was recently rewatching one of your older videos where you compared the two different Black Swan variations. It got me thinking that there are also two different Cupid variations, the one we all know in the full length ballet but also the Cuban Cupid variation which I've only seen performed at competions (my personal favorite tbh). I can't find any backstory of how this variation came about so I was wondering if you could make a video on comparing the two? Much love from Amsterdam! 🇳🇱
I love Coppelia, easy top 5 favorite ballets, so I'm so happy to see my favorite, ageless ethereal beings talk about this beautiful conclusion to the ballet and the beautiful Pdd : ) If I danced this beautiful pdd with someone and we had that much on stage chemistry, I'd have to ask "What are we" after 😅
Thank you thank you thank you! The editing on your videos makes them so wonderful and easy to watch and follow the excellent commentary, and seeing Vadim and Marianela dance together is good for all of our health.
This was truly exquisite! Thank you both for breaking down the steps. Love, love, love watching Marienela & Vadim!! The Royal Ballet has always been my favorite. The first live performance of a professional ballet company I attended was The Sleeping Beauty performed by none other than The Royal Ballet! I just subscribed to The Royal Opera House streaming service and I hope this performance is available. Again many thanks!!!
Ahhh, you are touching many of my fav points of... ever. As in.. there is nothing more beautiful than an arabesque. As you said... 90 degrees. Was completely disarmed during adagio in class, and ladies would arrive at an arabesque and I was done for.. would become mesmerized and admit would fall in a little bit of love in the moment. Still do. Is there anything more beautiful that a breathtaking arabesque? I think not.
Finally getting to it. I actually have watched act 3 the least out of all the ballet, because I watched Act 1 particularly, and a bit of act 2 over and over again. Also it's strange seeing Nela as Swanhilda and Vadim as Franz, as my go to is a different Royal Ballet recording with Leanne Benjamin and Carlos Acosta. Actually, Nela is in the corps in that one. Even I didn't appreciate it enough. This was INCREDIBLE. Thank god we're going back to me being on Central because of daylights savings and it will be easier to watch live. Though I've moved it a bit further back in my plans, someday I want to write a Sci-Fi retelling of Coppelia.
