This is the privilege of having generational wealth - those who came before likely built their wealth from nothing, then their descendants use their family name, reputation, and often money. Then say "I'm self-made, nobody helped me get to where I am today" - that might have been true of your grandfather, but your ground floor is what he and your father built for you to stand on
Ouch. It's a common attitude I've encountered in business. The fathers and grandfather's that created the business would be regular guys then the son that inherits the business acts all arrogant like they created it. A few of them went under.
We need to stop asking: “is it ethical?” The real question is: “By what ethical framework and principles do I want to operate?” Based on those answers anyone can decide what action align with their ethical standards. In this case, should the young man adopt a capitalistic ethic, opening a business in his town to compete with his grandfather and father is in fact ethically acceptable and a credit to his character. Should he, however adopt an altruistic ethic as the basis of his working life, he would not challenge his family’s business and merely serve at their behest. Nothing is ethical or un-ethical. It all depends on the type of ethics to which one subscribes.
There’s nothing unethical about starting a business, will he be as successful as his family’s business at first? Certainly not but I don’t know why Dave had to shit on him.
He’d profit from his family’s reputation and what if his work customer service etc was sub par? He’d hurt the reputation that’s been built. If he wants to go his own way he should not trade on the family name. Period
Depends if he uses that name and reputation, if its a new company with a different name then theres no issue in him trying to build up his own nane, has to happen sometime
If the business can be taken from "his fathers name" then there is no customer loyalty, and people will spend money where they want.... its just business.. dave understands that but would never say because it would undermine his common man priciples, but the businessman in him would absolutely do it presented with the opportu ity this mam is.
Young kids think they work for a year or two and they know everything and they can do it better than someone who has been in business for decades. He need to just be quite, work hard and pay attention to what is going on, Look, Listen and absorb what is happening.
people 80 miles radius that a whole lot of business, unless the field is very specific like say medical supplies for homes OR the population within that area is small. is he giving his dad compitition or help if it is, this is the real question
I think that the "reputable business model," died in the 80's. Marketing and advertising firms get paid to represent companies whose product quality is valued less than brands recognition. Every company from Porsche to Rolex have dumbed down their customer base so much that "brand recognition" supersedes product quality. This kid can advertise his venture and ensure clientele, increase market value by carrying on his grandfather's company reputation. Maybe encourage the kid to match quality with accessibility and the advice may yield better results than killing the hopes of a young entrepreneur at the gate 🤔
Yikes I'd never do that to my pops. He built are flooring company from the ground up. All I can do is be a better version of him built on top of what he created
I get that he wants to do better, but his “better” is built on the insane opportunity his dad gave him. He would be making half his salary if on is own. A would have no capital to start his business in the first place.
Well, it's a free market. The only thing stopping this guy from starting his own business is morals. Whether or not his business succeeds is a completely different problem. If this guy is determined to strike it out on his own then he should start in a different city or area where his fathers company name doesn't reach so there wont be competition and wont have the stigma of a father and son competing against each other.
If his grandpa started it and eventually passed it on to his dad than his dad is eventually going to pass it on to him. So why would you start your own. Why not work really really hard in the business and then when it's your turn take over the business and keep it going and then pass it on to your son?????
