    Finally started watching the movies with my dad who is 29 years army retired, it’s becoming our new thing to do together! He even gets some of the things Sharp does, like in Sharpe’s Eagle where he puts the rum on the soldier’s back he even says “Half in the belly, half on the back,” right before Harper said the same!

    Girdwood can recognize both Harper and Sharpe had served simply by the manner they carry themselves compared to the new recruits. This is true. Veterans have a different look upon them with both how they stand and walk. Some of the disciplines we learned never go away. That's soldiering.

      nah, people re-enlisting was probably not as surprising at the time as it would be today. people get out (or desert) only to find out that life at home really isn't much better, or they don't have any real prospects, etc. so they re-enlist. still uncommon, but not so much as to raise suspicion. the recruiting sergeant even recognized that sharpe was an old soldier. didn't bat an eye @@ivansharpe7986

    • @AParticularlyConcernedCitizen
      @AParticularlyConcernedCitizen ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Conscripted men were considered expendable and were required to serve the crown. As for the punishment of death for running, Sharpe mentions that it'd just result in lashings normally, which is correct. If you refused to participate, you'd be imprisoned, but it was remarkably rare to just end someone's life for disobedience in boot camp. They did treat recruits like absolute garbage and instilled discipline through that, much like any other military.

      It was quite normal since other then those who volunteered a large part of the British Army at the time where jailbirds. Drunks, thieves and murderers who where offered a choice, prison, transportation, dance the hangman's jig or join the army. Some simply joined for the third of a pint of rum that was issued as part of their rations. So while by today's standards it might seem brutal or cruel yet disciple had to be instilled and these men had to be made to work as a unit. But to some degree certain parts of that "boot camp" are still used even today.
