Let's talk all things onion bolting. This is only my second year growing onions and I was really hoping for a large onion harvest but this year is not that year... I learned a lot though!! I learned why onions bolt and what you can do with a bolted onions! I hope you found this information helpful!

I’ve always associated the word “Bolt” with the word “flee” so whenever I hear about vegetables bolting I imagine tiny little onions running for their lives and it makes me giggle 😂😂

BECKY..... gotta tell ya...had a late night/early morning for farmers market today and after losing 3 bowls of onion greens (cuz waited too long and they had to be sheep food) I finally decided damit I’m making green onion pesto. BTW, at 4am before market this AM... Anywhoooo, made one batch , it made 3 jars and sold all 3 right away! Gave a gal sample and she bout two jars!! Thanks for the fun recipe! Ive made a batch too and went down a storm with my family and husband! We had it as dip for homemade breadsticks yum!! I would never of thought about onion top pesto, but it will now be on my make list each year. Yum! 😋

Becky , I listen very carefully to all your mistakes to learn for later on when I'll starting my homestead
The onion flowers are delicious and make great flavored vinegar, and used on salads or cooking.
One more key consideration in onion growing: be sure to plant the right type for your latitude: either “short day” varieties or “long day” varieties. Here in Albuquerque I have better luck with short day onions. Probably for Becky “long day” varieties are best.

I have Egyptian clumping onions. They are like big scallions. They're everywhere on my 10 acres lol.

I got tied of bolting onions from planing onion sets. So now I always start onions from seed in January indoors. I then transplant the seedlings in late April or early May.
Why I went over to perennial onions. My weather bounces all over, and the perennial onion are smaller but reliable. Good luck with the big Walla Walla onions.

On your perennial onions, when do you plant the bulbs that come out in a cluster. I was given some and now I'm at a loss....can you continuously plant the bulbs or do you wait until fall?
@@Lori.. I have several types: a shallot, a potato onion and Egyptian walking onion, along with other alliums. If I have space, I will let the bulbils fully mature, and just let them fall over and root, then sperate into where I want them. The potato onions form a mound and I'll dig what I want and separate if needed in the fall once we start getting frosts. They'll grow a bit of green but be one of the first things to show up in the spring.

One of my early gardening mistakes as well. It still happens even under the best conditions. I use those for dehydration and they have great flavor. Tedious work but it’s worth it. Hang in there! I’m still learning after 30 years!
My carrots did crappy. But, we planted in a container because we just moved. Next year we’ll have a great big garden.
I have been gardening for decades and I just learned a lot from this video, thank you!
By the way, there are so many issues that can come up at any time, it is impossible to do enough research on every possibility. We are creatures that learn best from experience.
Way to go to salvage those onions and give yourself a plan for next season. And as a bonus, we now can all benefit from your experience .

Every year a few of my onions bolt.
I love it. I use the seeds that grow from those flowers to plant the following year. I always get great onions from those seeds. 👍🏻❤️
Great clarity in explaining onion development, Becky. Two extra wins: 1) You now have an enviable supply of frozen onions from which to grab a handy handful. 2) That top guy no longer needs to spend hours a day explaining to customers why onion starts can bolt. 😃
I run softneck (storage) onions that start to bolt, or not so healthy onions, through the food processor slicer. Takes seconds. Freeze most and dry some.
I don't think so b/c last year i grew onions from sets and I toped my Walla Wallas and they are growing so well. I think it was when I planted them out but I could be wrong...
You can also leave some to let the flowers turn into seeds and then collect the seeds for future plantings. I'm planning on intentionally leaving some to bolt so I don't have to rely on buying seeds year after year.

I threw some sprouted potatoes into a half wine barrel where I grew some excellent Yukon Gold spuds. Then I planted sprouted onions in the same soil. I let the onions do what they wanted and they are now 5 feet tall with the bolts. They are on my roof deck and the flower bulbs actually follow the sun, bending throughout the day. There are 5 stems and each is as big as my wrist. I'll wait until the flower pods open then dig the plants up to see what's under the soil. Thank you for the info!

I literally watched this and then ran outside to harvest those that i cut the blooms off of. I thought the same thing if I cut them flower part off they would be fine. Thank you for the great video full of tips!!
Excellent info. I knew about the biennial part and that that is a reason they don't bulb some years, but I didn't know about the freeze/6 leaves limit. Millennial Gardener talked about this recently (NC zone 8a) and has indicated that he will be planting seed from now on. Can start them in Jan, plant in April/May and have the same results. Plus seeds are cheaper to buy.

Exact same thing happened to me this year (6/2023) Vancouver WA (8b)
I’m so glad I waited to put my sets out this year, we we’re having 70-80 degree days in March then it suddenly snowed in Portland, I just put them out now that it’s end of April, but unfortunately my tomatoes died from the snow. And my citrus saplings got damaged but they immediately started pushing new growth a week later so not a complete loss. But I grow a lot of onions and they definitely would have bolted later on if I had moved them out of the greenhouse

Nature is so beautiful! Its amazing how the onions are "programmed" to go dormant during winter and then bolt in their 2nd growing season.

My spinach has just bolted but apparently the problem was the opposite, it can't handle heat. Not that anyone can describe the UK as a "hot" country 😂 feeble spinach
I’m in zone 8b too but I’m in College Station, Texas. Going by the planting chart for here it shows I plant onion bulbs January 5 through February 5. I ordered onions from Dixondale Farms too I ordered Texas Legend which are short day onions. I just planted them January 22 which was yesterday, I got the plants just a few days ago and waiting a couple of days because the temperature dropped to 29 degree’s and high yesterday was 60. I noticed everyone says plant onions in the fall. We are just now getting freezing weather if I had planted them in November or December with all the warm weather then getting freezing weather now they would have bolted on me. I’m new to growing onions so thank you for the info because I was starting to feel like I should have planted earlier.

Loved the info! I planted green onions that I had actually bought from the store. A few of them did start to seed out. I went out today and cut all my tops to make pest with I guess tomorrow I'll go pick those few that bolted lol. Thanks for sharing!
My onions bolted but it's a-okay because the bees love the flowers. My loss but the bees' gains...love it!

A lot of my onion bolted this year too. I probably started too early, but we also had a cooler spring than normal. I usually over winter my intermediate day onion. The cooler temps and bolting are in alignment with what you are saying. Thanks for sharing!

The exact same thing happened to me. I just cut off all the stalks last week to make your pesto. We had a horrible rain so I hope my thimble size onions are still good 🤪. Thank you for sharing this information. Now I know what to do in the future.

I love the flavor of onion and garlic bolts. I would pick them when I was a kid out of my family’s garden. We had both domestic and wild garlic.

I planted onions two years ago. We get a bunch. The rest bolt and I use us for the seeds and then we get a bunch the rest bolt and we use those for seeds. Honestly I’ve never had to replant anything. I consider a winter veggie herb whatever. I can see where I’m doing wrong now. Thank you for the information. I watch you every day now. I’m so much more armed for next year. I’ll be glad when we get into winter planting of what I can put in the winter beds. Great job Becky and happy Fourth of July

This explains a lot about what happened with my Dixondale onions last year....I am in Tacoma. It was the first year I had ordered from Dixondale. I was so disappointed with my harvest. My onions were tiny and they all started to bold. I didn't know if it was because of the spot I had them planted in or it was just the starts themselves. Very helpful video!
