Yeah, I don't understand how these Uber drivers don't notice that they charge slower when near full and that they're wasting time / money by charging to full every time. Kathy was right! The car should have been charged 100% before starting the trip! Because you did not charge before leaving, you took a spot from another driver needing to charge. 😊
Great video guys. I posted last year that I think Electrify America will be bankrupt soon. I can’t believe they still have at least one broken charger at every stop, come on EA. Stay safe guys.
That Porche looks amazing! Love the BSM lights and the massage seats. If you did 95 in NJ to exit 11, you probably would have had better EA luck at Jersey Gardens. :)
Dave, my BMW i4 M50 navigation doesn't show the Tesla MagicDock sites either. I still use the Tesla app to find them and initiate my charging session. I will also turn on manual battery pre-conditioning.
Dave, just to let you know, NJ, just like NY, has tons of Magic dock sites. You don't have to wait for NACS access when driving there. However, most are along the NJ Turnpike corridor, so parhaps you should take it next time rather than the garden state.

Glad you’re enjoying the car!! Porsche’s sales are way down, especially for EVs. Hopefully VW figures this all out with charging across all its brands, or they’ll be in even worse trouble.
I would not buy a new EV in late 12-2024 or in 25 with an outdated CCS1 connector. It really will only matter on long road trips, but I would not like the outdated connector. I also think lots of new options will come out for the NACS connectors, like V to L, V to Home, and V to G. Hopefully, even V to V like the Lucid has. New DC fast chargers are being installed daily somewhere in the USA, Canada and Mexico - North America, so charging should only get much better. Places that have a large ride share drivers need separate chargers for them. Dave and Kathy, great video and enjoy your new vehicle. You do need a NACS to CCS1 adapter once it's approved.

Thanks for pointing this out I will look for this My understanding is this info was in the Taycan only. Can you dm me a pic of this in your Macan EV? Thx!
Dave, this is the second video in which you’ve disparaged the rear spoiler. The Porsche engineers almost certainly put it there for a reason. It increases the downforce on the rear tires at high speeds, improving vehicle driving dynamics, and / or it reduces the drag on the vehicle by making the air flow off the back of the car more turbulent. It may do both.
Or it may do neither and be strictly cosmetic. You think a 5,300 lb vehicle can benefit from additional downward force? The spoiler is likely there simply to mimic the long established aesthetic of the 991.
Yes, that’s also a possibility, like the sport exhaust sounds in the ICE cars. It would be good for Dave or Kyle to ask a Porsche engineer. I dislike gimmicks, as Dave apparently does. They diminish the seriousness of the vehicle.
The fixed, over-window rear spoiler on the ICE Macan looks much better than the moving, under-window spoiler on the EV Macan, and the former will never break whereas the latter can and will break …
24:15 You ended up going to EA Bloomfield location that the Porsche navigation had originally suggested and you have overruled to to Clifton instead. This overruling of the cars’ EV planning hasnt been working out so well…
Wonderful video!! Def holiday charging at EA is a total mess, they have a huge amount to improve and learn from Tesla w their charging stations. Congrats on a successful road trip, cheers Kathy!!
What efficiency did you get during your drive and was the car predicting the arrival battery status charge correctly when you arrived at the destination?
The CCS 2 world is absolutely fine in the UK and Europe for all EVs. If you live in the UK/Europe, don't assume that these CCS1 problems apply to you. Yes, there are occasional issues either with queuing, chargers not working, or giving slower speeds than hoped but my experience (20,000 EV driving per year across UK and Europe) is nothing like this experience. Keep it up UK and Europe, the progress already made is working well, in my opinion, and improvements continue.
@@philhartley7564 absolutely correct. The U.S. messed it up by not standardizing the plug. In Europe it’s all CCS and people can choose which chargers they use - including a lot of Tesla Superchargers. This entire adapter mess is self inflicted and the cause for a lot of pain for the consumers in the U.S. I drove with an EQB from Germany via Switzerland to Italy and back via France (through four countries) and charged anywhere including Tesla chargers with only one issue on the first day. Chargers were usually right at the rest stops along the highways. That’s roughly 2500 miles in three weeks we did.
Sorry, but I don't understand why you didn't wait until Porsche had access to the Tesla Supercharger network and a built in NACS plug. Traveling in EV's in the USA still requires too much planning that most american's don't want to deal with. Merry Christmas!
I Totally agree. Just wondering if the Porsche/ VW Group is open to Tesla superchargers yet? Albeit that Electrify America and Porsche are both apart of the VW Group. So best chances are to buy your own NACS adapter because of the wait time recieving an adapter is probably what's holding things up not to mention is Tesla or VW Group both satisfied with the make of the adapter to match all vehicles. A2Z typhoon pro looks to be a good adapter recommendation from Tom on State of Charge.
Great video Dave. Curious if you’re looking only for EA, or if you allow navigation to other networks? I’ve used everything from local utility DCFCs, to university DCFC testing lots, to Mercedes Bucee charging. I feel like the vehicle bias to EA is overloading EA and under utilizing other networks, and curious of your experience. Also, looks like the charger you got was a balanced unit, so likely was load sharing with the stall next door.
People will view this video and think EVs, particularly non-Teslas, are not great for road trips. The fact is this is the perfect road trip for this car. It's only approximately 170 miles from Darien to Atlantic City. Starting out with close to a 100% charge, you can make it there, charge overnight, and make it back home without ever stopping to charge. You'd do it in a great car and spend far less on electricity than you would on gas. My Macan 4S EV arrives next month, and I can't wait. Enjoy the holiday season everyone!
Hi Dave, at the long line up at the first EA charger, just hit the manual preconditioning button while shopping for another charger, that should be the Out of Spec way!
As always a enlightening and wonderful video with you and Kathy. The que for Electrify America was bad. Just like bad ICE drivers there are now bad EV drivers. I am disappointed that I was able to see the speedometer with Kathy at the wheel. I will pause watching for two weeks. See you on the 18th. I just learned our neighbor sold her Tesla as was inside the car and the 12 volt battery died. She did not know of the mechanical release of the door. EV owners need to understand more about their car. Our neighbor went back to Lexus hybrid.
Dave will charge when range is 3-7% because his goal is maximum charge power. When alone on a road trip, Kathy will charge at 20% for safety. Similar to my wife, she has no interest in kilowatts.
Again you have validated the insanity of buying a CSS car now if you want to road trip the EV. I’m very happy with Tesla and their charging network. Maybe you don’t keep your cars very long, but you never discuss the longevity impact of running the battery down to 3%. I don’t need to abuse that with my Model Y, even in the winter time on road trips since it has more range and charges fast since I don’t need as many KW to go the same distance as the Macan. Your charging process sure gives your wife range anxiety for good reason being CSS base. Hotel level 2 is so hot and miss also, NACS or CSS.
This is real life as more and more EV's hit the road. Even though many more charging stations will be constructed, the number of EV's on the road will continue to overwhelm those stations.

Kathy driving the Macan😊 ya, and charging problems are not for me. I'll stay with my hybrid for now. There are way too many things to calculate. But what a great trip !!! Well, after the charging fiasco
This video exemplifies that EVs are really for nerds (the viewing audience). When your wife said that “totally confused me”, I would say that is the response from the vast majority of the driving public. There is just too IT backend on these cars to make them useable for the general public, even playing music is a chore of navigation. The first thing I would do is turn off all assistance features and alarms, warning assist lights, it seems cars like to make a warning sound for EVERYTHING, my car will sound an alarm when the washer fluid gets low…😢
Dave, it think you're wrong about the bar and what the car is asking for. I notice that the bar on your Macan NEVER changes and seems fixed, whereas the bar on the Taycan seems static and changes with battery SOC and temperature.
@@markvanderlee Agreed! Why does he think the car is calling for more juice? Seems to just display what is happening. Yes it CAN go higher into the gray bar but why the assumption on power requested(by Dave)?
@@chrisruggiero9043 , missed the lease. Thanks for clarifying. Whomever buys that Porsche at the lease end will be in for a great deal. Except for charging issues, it is a nice set of wheels.
With the Macan having staggered wheels, 285 rears, 245 fronts, is it necessary to protect the car body panels, especially the very lower back of the rear doors in front of wheel bay? My MYP too has staggered wheels at 275s and 255s. Had to install those rather ugly Tesla Model Y mudflaps; otherwise, road debris kicked up by the front wheels would have dinged and chipped the heck out of the bottom of rear doors.
Just looking at the order of announcement on when various manufacturers will get access and it looks like VW group is last on the access list so could be a Christmas present for 2025 depending on how quickly the other manufacturers get onboard of course. Looks like Kia is next in line followed by Hyundai/Genesis closely after. At least as they get access means all these Uber drivers will vanish and move over to Superchargers instead. Can only hope Ionna gets their act together and push out with their sites as quickly as they can.
I don't think anyone should use the words "This is our Roadtripper" if it does not have NACS support or is a Tesla (for easiest roadtripping). From all the videos I have seen it still looks like an absolute nightmare. Having done many roadtrips in Model Y LR and Model S LR on east coast, no planning or waits are required.
“7% is the proper SOC to arrive at a charger” - Dave. Sorry Dave, Kathy is correct, 20% is “the proper SOC to arrive at.” Actually, it would be hard to have only one “proper” SOC reserve, as different people have different goals. Personally, I am going to charge for as long as it takes to eat, or to take a restroom break, so maximizing charing speed has zero effect on my trip. Instead, I want enough reserve energy to handle contingencies, like missing my exit for the charger and driving another 45 minutes to get to the next one.
Plaidington was the best spec'd car, That Ultra red was a thing of beauty and the cherry on top with the plaid version. This car is just another boring overpriced porsche product upcharging for the badge. In my opinion the X is so unique and cool with the falcon doors automatic open and closing entry with such cutting edge tech and over the air updates to make it never seem old.
The bigger issue with BZ4X driver is he’s wasting so much earning potential by spending so much time charging vs driving. Perhaps that would register with him.
Getting access is one thing but will people actually use it? I believe not every one will use it. I personally would only use it as a backup. Others on free charging plans will still want to use EA even when they don't need to. These same people probably have a home chargers and don't want to use them.
Dave, always smiling even when life brings troubles, from running out of charge to dealing with long-charging villains.

This overruling of the cars’ EV planning hasnt been working out so well…
Agree! Thanks for the geographical help I get so confused in Jersey for some reason
How much range did you lose with the new tires?
Wonderful video!! Def holiday charging at EA is a total mess, they have a huge amount to improve and learn from Tesla w their charging stations. Congrats on a successful road trip, cheers Kathy!!
Great video showing the navigation features of this vehicle. Unfortunately, EA needs to add more stalls per location.
What efficiency did you get during your drive and was the car predicting the arrival battery status charge correctly when you arrived at the destination?
Can’t wait for your road trip to Marco island! Kathy be like bring me to the airport!😂
Sorry to disappoint, but we flew down this trip :)
Exactly!
Cheaper than gasoline? It depends on what ICE vehicle you are comparing it to.
@@dennissteul5445 Of course, I'm comparing the Macan EV to a gasoline powered Macan. Why would I compare it something else?
Let the lady drive Dave.
iONNA is about to be the solution to charging issues.
Hi Dave, at the long line up at the first EA charger, just hit the manual preconditioning button while shopping for another charger, that should be the Out of Spec way!
There is no manual precondition button on the Macan EV unfortunately
In January we should have Kia & Hyundai NACS adapters. Mercedes is next hopefully by April. Porsche is probably summer time.
Funny to see you and Kathy fighting. I agree with her that you should have charged to 100% at home before you left. Dave, you blew it.
Out of Charge Dave strikes again! 😂
He was dying to try the plug and charge feature
Not with Superchargers.
With Tesla opening up their network to even more manufacturers (Kia in January), even those will be overwhelmed.
@@BradfordSparks You have never looked at their map. Or PlugShare. They're all over. And chargers are being installed every single day none stop. Many thousands per year and it's only accelerating as more and more gas stations go under. And now IONNA has joined the party with several of their stations opening in the next 2 weeks. And they don't install a measly 4 plugs per site like EA. They Install 8 or more using Alpitronics 400kW chargers.
@@BradfordSparks You clearly have never looked at their map. Or PlugShare. Tesla sites are 12, 16, 20, 24, 40, 48, 80, 84, or 100 plus. They;re not EA with their measly 4 stalls per site on most places.
And now IONNA has joined the party. They're opening their first few sites in the next 2 weeks. And they install 8 or more charger/ports per site using Alpitronics hyper 400kW chargers with one of the highest reliability rate in the business.

Which is the best road tripping EV over the holidays? Tesla, by far, even if you can get a 350 kW charging EV with a flat charging curve.
EA is the absolute worst. I would only use them as a last resort. Always full of Kias with complimentary charging, located in the terrible areas, broken stations and expensive pricing. Tesla adapter for the win!
Wow! I haven't seen an EA line like that outside of California. That sucks!
Dave and Kathy- thanks for sharing the highs and lows of your real world road tripping experience. Dave, Kathy deftly tolerated moments when it sounded like your were "mansplaining"...ha ha.
She is an expert at toleration
The grey bar isn’t what the car is asking but it’s the max it can take 270kw.
If there is a show for pretty cars, your Macan should be in it.
Great video but price point I would still consider ice version and no waiting to charge 😊
Dave spending about 1/3rd of his remaining life at chargers.
At least!
Congrats with your Macan. What would concern me is that in 11 months when you trade this beauty in, it will have depreciated by about 30 grand.
This one is a 15k miles per year lease based on what he’s said in previous videos. You’re right though, luxury EV depreciation is brutal.
@@chrisruggiero9043 , missed the lease. Thanks for clarifying. Whomever buys that Porsche at the lease end will be in for a great deal. Except for charging issues, it is a nice set of wheels.
You have a cool car! Enjoy!
Merry Christmas to you..
"I'm going to drive" is Kathy code speak for "Dave, shut the hell up and let me have some fun."
First class seat on airplane is degraded down to waiting for interstate greyhound bus when waiting for CCS charging.
Why l am l not suprised by the title of this video after only 5 minutes of ownership
Electric vehicles with a range of over 400 miles would be a game-changer. They’d reduce stress for drivers and ease the burden on superchargers.
When you set off why wouldn’t you start with 100% from home? I did a trip, almost 275 miles to first stop.
I wanted to test Plug and Charge and use CCS In hindsight I should have and did that for the trip home
Am I the only one who watches these two and couldn't care less about the car?
We definitely need EA to scale up faster or IONNNA needs to be the solution
Tesla having a monopoly would be a bad thing. Lets hope EA gets better
Consumption?
I wonder how long it will be until Kathy trades back to the Juniper Model Y next year…
the steering wheel only needs to be touched and not turned
Can you not move your charging from 80% up to 100% from your App? You have to go to the car to do that?
You can
Trouble in paradise!!
You should have Magic Docked!
The point was to ensure plug and charge was working for this trip Going forward, you are absolutely right
Electrify America is the same reason I no longer have my I4 M50.
The bigger issue with BZ4X driver is he’s wasting so much earning potential by spending so much time charging vs driving. Perhaps that would register with him.
It's going to be a long wait for Tesla to open up Superchargers to Volkswagen Group>Porsche. Volkswagen Group is the primary behind Electrify America.
Í´m sorry but it is called the Panamera not panorama.
O man you are so right!! Honest mistake and thanks for the gracious correction :)
I'm worried this will start happening at superchargers eventually when more OEMS get access
Getting access is one thing but will people actually use it? I believe not every one will use it. I personally would only use it as a backup. Others on free charging plans will still want to use EA even when they don't need to. These same people probably have a home chargers and don't want to use them.
My Macan 4 speedometer is 3 miles off. My Cayenne GTS is only 1 mile off.
My Macan ICEV and panamera both are 3 mph off … I think that’s more the Porsche standard …
Didn’t you change from Genesis to Tesla because of CCS charging hassles? Now back to CCS headaches again. Let’s see how long you keep the Macan.
It’s all fun and games until you get a flat and realize there’s no spare in your $135K car.
