    My main takeaway from this, as a non-nautical person, is how surprisingly far away the anchor was dropped! And also how incredibly difficult this must be on an owner-operator yacht, albeit clearly a much smaller one than this

    I absoulty, would never have the opportunity to be aboard such a remarkable ship.
    With that being said, it is an eye opener to see how the other half lives.
    Your videos are remarkable and thank you for the time it requires.

    Learning so much about what it takes to captain a super yacht and all the work involved. Love the clarity and cool approach you have in commanding the crew. It seems to be a very efficient and happy crew who are being taught a load of stuff too. Thank you.

    Tristan - I think you’re missing a few tricks here IMHO. The secret of this manoeuvre is to drop the anchors at exactly the same distance out from the shore every time you do this. I’ve done this several hundred times and this is my advice/opinion. The best way to drop the anchors in the exact spot every time is with the radar. We set the radar on 0.25NM, line up parallel with the shore & set a VRM on the distance, then drop both. So, to achieve 4 shackles down + 40m boat + 50m off the rocks = 110 + 40 + 50 = 200m = 1.07 cables on the VRM. 4 shackles down in 20-40m depth should have you rock solid in 20+ kts of cross wind. Secondly, if you know you have the anchors set in exactly the right position every time you can back down and stay in astern propulsion whilst hooking up the lines and by kicking back on Port or Stb engines you can swing either way & tension up the anchors to long stay, ensure they’re set solid and keep control during the manoeuvre, in up to a 15kt crosswind. Thirdly, keep the (Buoyant - that's crucial!) lines onboard, laid out down the side decks - fix the strop to the rock, then get the tender to run the line to the strop - that way you know the line is free to run. Keeping the line in the tender often results in tangled line. That’s my advice on how sleep well for the night tied, whilst to the rocks.

      By using fancy abbreviations like VRM, Port, KTS makes you sound like someone who doesnt know anything at all. Pretentios little kid. Tristan is a real captain and knows what he is talking about. Fake news spreader.

    Great videos Tristan. I just came across your channel today on youtube. I have 65 yacht which I use for pleasure on the west coast of Canada. We also employ stern tying to shore in an area called Desolation Sound, BC. I also have to agree with you completely in regards to sailboats, many do not know the the collision rules at sea. I don't how many times they try to be the right of way vessel when under power or sail with power or when you give way they decide to tack back in front of you, very frustrating. In one of your videos you were hauling your anchor after letting go of your shore stern lines in a bay when a sailboat crossed between your bow and the approaching shoreline instead of going around your stern, I said to myself what an idiot as that has happened to me. I was glad you that you were not impressed with that also. I would love to explore Coatia by sea, it looks absolutely beautiful.

    Well done shore tie. I have never seen a boat your size shore tie.
    We have boat on west coat and go north from Washington to Alaska. We shore tie in some areas once north of Vancouver Island as anchor water depth is 100 or so feet . If we did not shore tie we would swing too much. Current in bay we anchor is strong as tide can be 15 feet. Your chase boat driver is very good not to have damaged it on the rocks.
    I like the idea of a light on the shore tie lines. We have 500 feet of 3/8" poly line. We are normally 100 to 150 feet from shore.

    Croatia is one of my favourite holiday countries, for sure. We spent a summer holiday there, and we were super happy with our vacation, the kind people there and all the gorgous places we found was really nice. The whole coast is just filled with bathing resorts, nice appartements for rent and good restaurants. The prices was'nt to bad, lots cheaper than Italy, that we had visited the year before. I am a big fan of Italy, don't get me wrong, but it was a bit more expencive.

  • @D11DNG

    The straps/strops are actually webbing slings, purple have a safe working load of 1 metric ton, I would seriously think about using slings with a greater capacity or use dyneema rope which floats and has a greater capacity for securing the vessel.

    • @wjhann4836
      @wjhann4836 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ok, bigger load might be good.
      IMHO dyneema is not the right material if it comes to eventually sharp rocks (or even sharp edges). On top I would not expect a dyneema rope to show any stretch.

    • @D11DNG
      @D11DNG 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      wjha NN I would use fibre material with protection on sharp objects as a last resort, look for an anchor point without sharp edges,Its not practical to use wire slings or chains on an anchor point to eliminate the concern of sharp edges. There is different lengths and working load limits available of Dyneema Rope and it has elasticity (spring) in it, which helps keep constant tension on the mooring line when the vessel moves(Rolls) because of other vessels passing or the tide changing.

      White Water rafting and Safety , rescue .
      Tie off to trees, rocks, whatever will hold, even several bushes.
      Straps and ropes. Rocky areas usually rough surface, straps do not slide, use safety rated carabiners to attach ropes, or rope on straps.
      White Water raft on river, at night, tie to tree or rocks.

    The AWOL is a stunning vessel indeed she sail with such ease to each destination. Just a quick question about her power plant output and she shaft driven with pitch props? And lastly being someone who observe comms, I must say the communication between crew on shore in the tender and aboard is spot on which makes it nice to observe and makes it look easy but I'm sure it's not, just like you said having confidence in your crew and captain and taking everything with a slow calculated pace makes it safe without any further compromises.
    And yes the anchorage spot is tranquil and clean well done guy's and stay safe.

    In Naval Aviation we would call that a three point tiedown.

    Yes how do you choose and attach the line to the rock. Amazing how you basically close off the cove when you do this, but guess others can pass over your anchor chain on the bottom of the sea.

    Another great and very informative Vlog, Gorgeous place too moor for the night.Out of Interest, just how many metres of Anchor Chain do you hold, I wouldn't want to be pulling that lot up if your windlass fails !!

    Really cool to see how you did that, I will try that myself on my sailboat :-)

    Do you ever have had any challenges with the anchor being stuck?
    I sail (sorry *smile* ) a couple of times per year in the Croatian archipelague with +40 feet catamarans and on more than one occassion the anchor got stuck under a rock.
    Lucky for us we have anchored in less than 4 meter depth so we can dive down and tie a second rope to pull it up in the opposite direction

    19:09 Please don’t lay the line over your legs like that, if that thing gets tension it will crush your legs. Have seen this before fortunately:(

    Very nice spot. Having had time at sea on my own yachts you would have quite a stressful job with a boat like AWOL.
