You are still blessing people years later! Worked perfectly. Got given a washer and dryer set today and I HATE those lid locks. I have no kids in the house, so there's no reason for it. 5 minute fix.
This video, literally, made my whole day. Just bought a used washer. Brought it home wasn’t spinning. Started diagnosing bummed because I’ve been needing a washer AND I JUST BOUGHT THIS THING…lid lock switch was broke. FOUND THIS VIDEO AND BAMMM….IT’S WORKING. Thank you so much
Dude! I slammed my lid in anger after having to adjust the unbalanced load for the 3rd time this wash cycle, then it flashed "LID" I followed your advice in this video and by golly its working now! Thanks, I was dreading telling the wife I broke this crappy washing machine!
This GE washer switch needs recalled, On the same inside lever, the little thin brittle plastic tip keeps breaking off even on replacement switches. Upside, this video shows a quick fix without replacing this switch. Washer is back to working again, Thanks for taking the time to post it
Do you really think that they want to recall something that makes them so much money? You gotta think about it, it's probably intentional. That's all it ever is with ge making money
I am 100% feeling your energy on this! My switch failed because a 1mm piece of plastic broke off. The only purpose of this switch is because some idiot managed to nearly die in a washing machine and their immediate reaction was to sue.
I literally ripped the lid off one day and it hasn't been letting me wash any clothes. I was thinking about using the money from a CD I've been saving all year to buy a new machine but saw this video this morning and boom, worked just like that. Bless you.
Thank you, I got super impatient and ripped the lid off the washer because it wouldn’t balance and I was trying to help it balance the clothes. Thought I was gonna need a new washer but I decided to look on TH-cam really quick and boom, there is your video. Thanks 👍
My man, still working in 2024! I replaced the switch 3 weeks ago and then last night it starts doing the same fkn thing! Will not be replacing my modified switch LOL Thanks a million, friend!
My man, you are our hero right now. Whole family got hit with a stomach bug yesterday and then this blizzard hit us today and everything's shut down. And yep, our shitty GE washer that's only 3 years old decided it'd be great timing to throw this "Lid not closed" error. Thanks to you, got it working again for at least the weekend until it can be properly repaired and we won't have a bunch of kids clothes and bed sheets smelling like vomit in the meantime!
I’ve been up half the night dreading spending the money on another cheap washing machine. Your simple video sure helped me out. My washer is working!! Thanks!
This video might as well have had my name on it because I just ripped the stupid door open and now it won't spin. I despise these new machines. I'm glad I'm not the only one. Thank you so much!
Brilliant. Mine is not the exact same model, but a similar lid switch on another GE model. This fix worked. Hope GE is watching this to address these recurring problems a better way.
Biggest piece of junk washer ever. I’ve spent 5 hours today trying to get my sheets and blankets to spin. Finally just ripped the lid open out of pure frustration. The commentary was dead on, great job friend
I could not thank you enough. I first fought with the lid just to get it open. Cause it decided to play the lock and unlock game with me. After I got it open, and figured out what was wrong with the damn thing. I found this video and you’re a life saver. God bless you, cause I almost lost my shit with how annoyed I was. ❤
Truly works!! Christmas Eve and can't get parts or repair person. Here I am hoping TH-cam can recuse me. Sure enough I found this wonderful man, easy to fix and now 3 washing loads later here I am to say huge THANK YOU!!
I have to say, while the shaky camera work was a little rough to watch, this 100% solved my problem. I'm not sure my wife will be OK with having to mess with this switch every few loads, so I'll be ordering a new a-hole Ralph Nader switch (unfortunately, I hate what that man did to our country). At least it's only $32 and easy to replace. THANK YOU for helping me get the laundry done today!
I hate my GE washer so much and all the people associated with it. Have had the lid lock sensor replaced 5 TIMES now and the unit is not even a year old. GE is refusing to replace the entire washer - I have always fixed my out of warranty appliances myself but if this shit continues with the lid lock I need to bypass the damn thing. Thank you for the video!!!
Brilliant! This video was so helpful. Thank you man! This crappy GE washer works so much better now with this ahem... modification. After 2 years of this thing, I was ready to take a hammer to it and haul it to the curb! Now I think it’s gonna be alright.
I seriously LOVE you right now!!!🤪😂 I have been messing with this stupid thing for hours upon hours! Trying to clean it & make sure the springs were tight enough 🙄 blah blah blah lol! I decided to search one more time for a video and I knew after the first couple sentences you had to talking about my washer! 🤣 But seriously THANK YOU!!! 💜
No , but if one of your kids sticks their are in there while it's spinning it'll rip their arm off. But a working washer is more important.. This is a bachelor fix only. Argh
I knew at the beginning of this video the tone in you voice this was the one haha Your hate for your washer and your helpful tip gave me hope to not throw my washer thank you!
I got a free broken washer and dryer set. Water would fill but the cycle never started. It had a Lid lock issue, go figure....NOW IT WORKS GREAT!!! THANK YOU!
I am not suggesting you do this but this is what I DID. Just remove the piece that's on the lid. Insert in that hole. All fixed. Now, you will notice that with this in, the machine thinks it's "locked". If the lock light flashes, take out the lock and reinsert. Push it forward in the hole. It's just not in the hole right. I am an old lady with over 50 years of doing laundry. No mamby-pamby tree hugger is going to tell how to use a washing machine.
Awesome. I have the same POS machine. I was out of balance again, I got pissed and ripped the cover open. This hack was great. Now I can wash again. Until I take a hammer to it next time. Thanks for the tip and great video
I had a lid error come up nothing with work watch this tour that crap art washing machines working I thought I was going to have to go buy another one so thank you
Nevermind I seen what you did now.. I was only removing the case lid that holds the bolt pin in place.. but I did it and it actually worked! 🤣.. thanks man!!! 🍻😎
Yesterday mine broke I managed to get the lid out but what did he exactly take out fr that made it fix I figured it’s that little lock that secures the spot isn’t locking properly
"If you have a GE washer that you hate so much that you ripped the lid off the top, then I have the video to help you. Fixes it, at least temporarily, until you can get a new part or just replace the POS with a better washer." Exactly why I am here... I hate the mother F-ing washer.
😂 I’m so glad I’m not the only person who hated this POS’ inability to balance a load and subsequently ripped the lid open in anger, breaking the stupid lid lock.
You described exactly what happened with my piece of poop washer. I hated it so much that I ripped the lid open and I was happy that I did hoping that I had solved the problem and then the next load didn’t work. When I played your video, I had to laugh out loud for a little while
You are a genius! I've been fringing with this same issue for nearly 2 days on my GE washer. I rent an apartment so I have to wait forever for maintenance to even come have a look at the problem let alone fix it. What a stupid machine, fucking lid lock. My grandmother had a washer and dryer she got as a wedding present that outlived her and my grandfather and are likely still working today, meanwhile this piece of crap is one year old and goes, "hurp derp can't wash your clothes because the lid wont lock."
Awesome work man. !!! I ripped mine open because it had no respect for my time. Said 1 min left for over 3 minutes. All I remember is screaming about if you are on time you are late and yada yada it broke. Thanks for saving me $400 on a new unit.
IT NEVER BALANCE S A LOAD! Glad im not the only one. I wrote a scathing letter to get about this piece of crap. Also why does it need to add water for a spin cycle !!!!
I know this is a old video but I'm desperate lol. I did this and it worked but after washing 2 loads I went to move switch back like you said and it's doing the locking on and off noise again and the lid locking light is blinking. I tried unplugging, restarting and unplugging the switch again but it did nothing. Can I get a few more loads done until new lock comes 😬🫣
I too ripped open the lid and broke the switch. I stuffed some crap in the switch but I believe *IT WILL RESET*, like the video mentions. So you will need to reset it every couple loads. AFAIK, there is no way to *permanently* override the switch. I see this part is $30 on ebay. I guess I'll need to buy it. It's my own fault anyway. I HAAAAAAATE this machine. Whoever passed this machine in the QA test should be fired. I love how you load it 50% and select deep fill AND extra rinse and somehow I still have dry spots on the clothes. Then you get the white fuzz on your clothing too. And let's not forget the extremely wrinkled shirts on the lowest spin setting. Everything need ironing. POS.
You are my spirit animal. I did something similar. I cut pieces of duct tape and rolled them into the size of the gaps that exist when all of the bullshit is in locking position. And placed them into said gaps. One long half width of tape around the whole shebang and now it always thinks the lid is closed and locked. I got the replacement part kit but think I'm just going to leave it as is so I can turn it on and load it while it fills. I'm much happier with my machine now. (mine is a slightly different model and doesn't need to receive an unlocked signal for most settings)
Thanks for the fix…I got the agitator version, so I don’t have a balancing issue. But I got pissed and ripped the lid open because I had to wait forever for it to stop spinning so I could add a piece of laundry. I was ready to buy another machine😂😂
I knew my switch was bad, but wanted this to work until my new one arrived, but it didn't. :( I tried bypassing it by directly wiring, but that didn't work either. Any advice to trick it into thinking it's locked just for the spin cycle if the switch is bad?
Just pop open the switch itself. Its just a couple clips around the side. You most likely got some crud on the contacts. Clean out the contacts inside and you are good. There are three areas with contacts, the part where the switch opens up the contact and another big contact area for the bimetallic switch. The rest is just the coil which is around 75 ohms in resistance. I like the good old days of a reliable magnetic switch. This design is just complete garbage.
This was a little difficult to follow, and I had to go back a few times... BUT THIS VIDEO IF FUCKING AWESOME! I was a le to fix my washer that stopped FULL of hot water and a load of soapy laundry. You rock my guy!! 🎉
So, I took apart the box you called mechanisms that make the lid lock and found a metal piece that had bent and wasn’t making good contact. I bent it back straight and after I put everything back together the lid lock began to work properly and I was able to do four more loads of laundry.
This is a huge failure mode on GE washing machines. So many youtube videos is a big indication. I was able to just manually manipulate my switch without pulling it out to get it to work again. It may just be a temporary fix for now. It makes me wonder if one can just electrically short out the switch to get the washing machine to work.
"CRAPPY" does not BEGIN to descript this Over-Priced, Under-Performing POC!! My late Mom gave us the money to buy this "Hi Tech" washing machine. Couldn't make it 2 years before I had to start replacing parts, parts, and MORE PARTS! NOTHING but trouble, Trouble, and MORE TROUBLE!! - - A HUGE MONEY PIT!! - - SORRY that we ever bought this piece of, GE JUNK!! (imo) NEVER AGAIN, GE!!
Same washer, different looking mechanism. When I yanked the lid, I broke the end off the latch (the part that goes in to the lid's loop). Before removing, I could hear a clicking of the lock trying to engage. Once removed, parts pulled out, and put back in, nothing happens. I try to start a cycle and the washer sits there for a short time, then displays end and shuts off. Any ideas?
Mine is the same. I think GE put out a new switch to stop people from bypassing the switch. I have glued the broken piece, it will now lock and cannot unlock itself. Cheap crappy parts. I have been able to start a cycle by removing the lock loop, however once clothes were put in, I am getting the same results- LID reads across the smart screen
Remember the slew of children that were killed when they all climbed into the spin cycle of a washing machine? No, neither do I. Locks on these things are ridiculous. I pulled mine out and unscrewed the mech on the lid and just left it hanging together. Every once and a while I remove the mech.
I'm sorry I don't know what a sensor washer is. Is it the lit lock switch that is broken look like this one? Will probably have to replace it but this video shows how easy that is..
So every few loads you have to reach in and wiggle that one part? My only 2 year old GE washers lock keeps clicking and wont go thru all the cycles. 5 people in my house and the effing washer wont work and Im about to freak out. 😳
My lid lock started acting up (turning on and off for and beginning of cycle), then washer would not start. I removed it, one prong looked corroded. I sanded it and scraped it with needle nose pliers. I put it back and now it works
I have the exact same washing machine and it is having the same issue as this video at midnight when I was washing my blanket!!!! I'm so frustrated and will try this out tomorrow 😑
When I took it out I just got to looking at it. I have a knack for figuring stuff out. If I made a video of everything I fixed, I could retire. I once used a $5 pond pump from amazon to fix a mini-split air conditioner.
I never thought i could get joy from an instructional video, but your hatred of the appliance has me grinning.
This washer is the worst purchase ive wver made
You are still blessing people years later! Worked perfectly. Got given a washer and dryer set today and I HATE those lid locks. I have no kids in the house, so there's no reason for it.

Have the same washer… you my friend are the god of stopping BS lol I hated that kid lock more than life and you have provided relief
I just broke the lid lock on my GE washer as well, your video worked great for getting my washer back up and running.. Thanks!
I want you to know I did this just now, because i pulled this stupid thing and I genuinely appreciate you so much.
You have literally restored my faith in humanity with your humble video.

Not all heroes wear capes. You sir have changed lives with this video😂
Not sure if you will see this comment but your solution worked for me. Thank you so much for making this video.
It's so funny. I created this video out of hatred for this washer. I'm glad it has helped others.
This instructional video helps me a lot and save me money from buying parts or hiring a technician. Thank you mister.

Lol, my feelings exactly, what a Piece of crap, less than a month old and has problems. Parts are from 5 different countries...
Can I do the same steps with a 490ACJ5WS? The switch mechanism is attached to the wiring, there is no separating
It's literally like you took the words out of my mouth. My little cover for the switch was even cracked in the same spot.
Mine too! Same spot and this was supposed to be an upgrade from my old loud machine, but now I can't wash anything because "LID" keeps popping up

Do you happen to see a part number for this new switch? Perhaps I could find another work around.
Remember the slew of children that were killed when they all climbed into the spin cycle of a washing machine? No, neither do I. Locks on these things are ridiculous. I pulled mine out and unscrewed the mech on the lid and just left it hanging together. Every once and a while I remove the mech.
What's an mech?
Mine was broken into pieces. How do I make my washer work without it ?It's a sensor washer 😢😢
I'm sorry I don't know what a sensor washer is. Is it the lit lock switch that is broken look like this one? Will probably have to replace it but this video shows how easy that is..
Absolute epic commentary. I laughed so hard. I agree with everything you said 💯 percent.
Not all heros wear capes 😂
So every few loads you have to reach in and wiggle that one part? My only 2 year old GE washers lock keeps clicking and wont go thru all the cycles. 5 people in my house and the effing washer wont work and Im about to freak out. 😳
I think the clicking is indicative of a transmission problem.
Sweet video gutted that switch and back in business thank you sir
My lid lock started acting up (turning on and off for and beginning of cycle), then washer would not start. I removed it, one prong looked corroded. I sanded it and scraped it with needle nose pliers. I put it back and now it works
Perfect title of the video!
I have the exact same washing machine and it is having the same issue as this video at midnight when I was washing my blanket!!!! I'm so frustrated and will try this out tomorrow 😑
Thank you!!! Mine is a different model but fixed it about 5 minutes.
What if you can’t get it open at all?!
Probably too late here, but this could be a power issue to the lock switch. If it is just a bad switch, I'd rip it open and try my fix.
You are my hero today
Thanks a million. You nailed it.😊
just ripped all the junk out and its working, hope it will make it till the replacement part arrives.
Saved me some money, thanks❤
How did you know it was this?
When I took it out I just got to looking at it. I have a knack for figuring stuff out. If I made a video of everything I fixed, I could retire. I once used a $5 pond pump from amazon to fix a mini-split air conditioner.
Thank you so much it worked for me as well! 🙏🏾
Thank you brother, you are a life saver!
