Rob you are spot on. They are indeed the most common problems and therefore the most easily remedied ones. For a pro you haven't lost touch with the rest of of us still playing in pubs and clubs and I thank you for that.
I've been playing for years... and I can tune drums... but explaining it to others isn't my forte... this is cool.
Same! So many times I’ve had to just “do it myself” after trying to explain it to someone, now I just send them this link. Tell them to watch the full video cause I don’t have the time and probably will leave something out 😅😂

As a Metallica fan, I understand the love/hate relationship between him and the fans. The fact that he opts to omit the ride 'cause is obsolete in the Metallica recent repertoire is just a red flag. Because he's limited, he tries to convince us that a ride is not even necessary to make good drum parts when the song actually could use a jazzy feel or a ride bell!!!

probably a low quality snare? I had a cheap ass snare that came with the kit and I tried everything, changed both heads, change the wires, tune it up, tune it down and I got to make it sound jus decent. Later I invested in something just a little better, a premier APk steel snare, and regardless it not being a high end snare it sounds pretty sweet with the heads and wires from my previous snare

Akiles Baeza yeah I had a low quality snare from like a $300 kit and I tried everything but nothing worked. But if I put headphones on dude my snare sounded like John bonham’s! But eventually I just bought a better snare.

Rob my snare tonight on my New Years Eve set up was getting funky. During sound check I noticed the bass guitar was causing my snares to rattle quite a bit and my tone was a bit off. All I did was tension up the bottom head as you showed us and it sounded like a million bucks again! I did not even have to touch the top head tuning wise. The bass guitar frequencies could barely make it rattle afterwards. I had a great show because of you man. Thanks a lot! PDP 10 ply Concept maple snare drum. I played a deep steel 1974 Premier forever till I found this drum. Even though I am a lifetime drummer you NEVER know it all. We really appreciate you out here.

Beatdown Brown, I've been kickin it and stickin it for around 2 years now. I can't even describe the amount of time I've wasted learning tuning methods and other necessary things from all sorts of people and videos over the past couple years and then I found your Channel. You are without a doubt the greatest mentor I've come across. I've watched drumeo and all the others like them, but you are so freaking good at skipping all of the unnecessary little tricks and things that everyone else knows for a fact they are "right about". Whether it be tuning or anything else. If I had found your channel when I first started I'd probably be twice as good as I am at playing the kit because half of my entire time drumming has been wasted on all the bullcrap. My kit sounds unbelievable now thanks to your videos. You the man! Keep the lessons coming and we'll keep watching em. And loving em. Pst7's for life! (Till I can afford the 2002's)

I am a guitarist. I did a gig with The Little River Band where I watched Derek Pellicci tune his drums. He hooked up a Sennheiser 421 to a strobe tuner, put a drum on a "lazy Susan" and pointed the mic at the head near the lug. He then spun the drum on the Lazy Susan to each lug and tuned them to the same pitch. He didn't use the same pitch for all the drums and I can't remember the tunings but that is a matter of taste. The result was the best sounding kit I ever heard.

Great, profound truth! You guys, I bought a Grover snare years ago. They make orchestral snares and mallets, etc. FANTASTIC. You can play it light, for jazz, or heavy for rock. Way recommended.

I recently bought a 6.5x14 1942 Ludwig wood concert snare from Frankie Benali's collection. I put my tuning ritual on it and it sounds AMAZING. Great advice in this video as usual.
Just checked you out after watching a video for my school Full Sail University "editing ambiences for video games" and you were on the side, videos I could watch. I don't even play drums, but on my to do list for the future personal schooling aspirations for my career in music. I'm glad I checked you out I dig your calm nature easy to understand and listen to, it was a plus for me educational also. I know I'll be checking out your videos in the future. Good vid covering the basics here. Very true on the batter head...when its gone it's gone. True with snare wires as well. Ive never tried the 2 keys at same time thing...gonna try that.

Excellent point about the bottom head. I always had trouble getting my snare drum to sound great and I always thought I had the bottom head plenty tight. However, recently I decided to crank it up to a level that I thought could be near the breaking point. But it didn't break and now my snare sounds better than ever. Plus I'm getting additional rebound which has allowed me to loosen the top head and reduce some of the excessive ringing.
I'm not a drummer but I dig your chill vibe so much I watched the whole video. Ok, I have a '60s Slingerland snare I add to tracks that needs work, too, but I dig the vibe.

Good job Rob, much appreciated. I had an old timer tell me that he used to keep the four lugs closest to the snare wires tuned a bit lower. According to him this let the snare wires buzz more resonantly. I've tried it, and it seems to work.

Right off the bat I like this guy! He's absolutely right; a bad sounding snare drum is a life ruiner.
Great video with great advice. I've been drumming for years and the only gadget I use is the Rhythm Tech Active Snare. I was turned on to them when I was playing in LA in 89-92.
I've had the same snares on one snare since 89. They srill sound grest. It might be something to checkout if you haven't already.

The snare was never an issue for me.
Those damn 14” and bigger toms were always tough for me to tune. Either they sounded like wet carboard or it had annoying overtones that seemed to ring for minutes after it was hit.

Some great advice here! Learning to get a decent sound out of a snare drum has been an uphill struggle for me, and I still wouldn't consider myself an expert. I do use a Drum Dial sometimes though. The thing is, before I started using one I didn't know what a properly tuned snare drum should sound like. The Drum Dial was a revelation, because with that thing I could get it mathematically perfect and then it was like whoa! THAT's what it should sound like! Now that I know, I can do it by ear, but I still use the Drum Dial sometimes. Another thing that I've learned is that you can drastically improve the sound of a cheap drum by putting a good head on it, like an Ambassador or an Evans G1 among others. That can make a huge difference in the sound of cheap drum!

HELLO ROB! Great idea using the 2 Key Method! An after thought is, throw off the snares when not playing! I do this on my Hi-Hat to keep the spring healthy! I useully leave the snares tight on my Ludwig Supraphonic! On my new East Rock snare I kept the snares off because it's my backup & spends most of it's time in it's case!!
This really helped me get a better snare sound from my Tama Superstar snare. Thank you

Thanks so much for the help. My '68 Ludwig Supraphonic 400 snare sounds great. I did have a problem with converting to 42 strand snare. Could not figure that one out. I converted to the plastic trap and a 20 strand snare rather than the old 16 strand or wires. But when I used your method of tuning and turned the trap off, then intensified the trap setting the snare came to life. The only other problem was it was ringing really loud even with baseball bat muffler on. So my last thing to do was to lower the tuning on the four key next to the trap and the tape holder and voila. It sounds awesome.

I played a lot for some years, very hard work and very underpaid. I already knew about these things, but just wanted to say these are very good and sound advices. Check these things out, it really helps.
If the skin breaks five minutes before the gig, have a spare skin - and use cut out rings from old skins to dampen the effing drum. There is no mode like panic mode, and when your dear guitarist laughs at you, smash his face AFTER the gig and solve the problem BEFORE the gig. :D

I've found that using Grover cable snares can help reduce snare buzz quite a lot. It won't eliminate the problem, but will certainly help. They dry out the sound a little, but for me, the sound still cuts thru the mix very well, and can improve the sound of metal (steel) shell snare drums by reducing the overall metallic ring of the drum.
I gave up on spiral snares a long time ago.
