Troy, Just like said it would be and drnk before the war are my fav.

Brian Molko does a pretty good job of covering the song, but he doesn't really get into the emotion of the storytelling. His delivery is fine, but it's all pretty monotone. Sinead tells the story of the young woman who loses her man to the sea far better. She goes from melancholy to angry denial (you're all wrong, I said) to wistful recollection to a big, big ending, all in the space of two minutes. She feels the song, and she makes you feel the woman's emotions. It's one of the best vocal deliveries I have ever heard and cannot really be compared to this decent cover.
Of the Placebo version. the Sinead version and the Iceage version, Placebo's was the only one that brought me near tears. He bring such a plaintive and lonely aspect to the song with his voice... I really *feel* the song when I listen to the Placebo cover. He sings so honestly. And the music in the studio version really sets the scene. I can see the darkness, the waves... I can see him lying in the sand... Just my opinion :P I think this is the best and most heartbreaking version.
You just can not cover an O'Connor song. Placebo is really good but like in fact the cause they are a band called "Placebo" and not just a singer +band like "Brian Molko and Band (or Placebo)" is exactly this: He is a good singer but O'Connor in terms of technic and voice is one of the best singer and songwriters of the last 50 years. + This is a song written for singers on the highest level and if you're not able to match it exactly it just sounds not very good.
