  • Vitamins are essential substances that our body needs in order to grow, develop normally and maintain its functions. This video covers vitamins A, B, C and D and their functions in the human body, ways where we can obtain them in our diet and the health outcomes when there is a deficiency in our body.
This video was created by McMaster University students Soheil El-azzouni, Stanley Chen, Sara Halawa, Yuxin (Tiffany) Tian and Kimberly Young in collaboration with the McMaster Demystifying Medicine Program

    Important notes from the video
Vitamins are essential nutrients needed for the body in small amounts to grow, develop, and function normally. There are 13 vitamins needed by the body. Vitamins come in two types which are water soluble and fat soluble.
Water soluble vitamins dissolve in water and are able to move freely in the body throughout the blood. These vitamins are found in fruits, vegetables, and grains. They are not stored in the body. The body takes the vitamins and disposes the remainder to the kidney. And these vitamins need to be included in our daily diets.
Fat soluble vitamins dissolve in fats. They require special carrier proteins to be transported in blood. Fat soluble vitamins are stored in fat cells when excess vitamin is present in the diet to be used in a later time.
    The two water soluble vitamins:
Vitamin B: there are 8 types of vitamin b and most of them come from our diet. Vitamin b preforms to main functions in the body which are to make energy and make red blood cells. Only some of these types preform one of these functions and there are other types which preform both functions. Deficiency in vitamin b can lead to some diseases depending on how many types that lack in the body.
Vitamin C: It protects the body from infections and contributes to the growth and repair of tissues. Sources of vitamins c are fruits and vegetables. Vitamin c deficiency can cause scurvy. Vitamin C is necessary to produce collagen.
The two fat soluble Vitamins are:
Vitamin A: It maintains and protects vision. It is a critical component of rhodopsin- a protein that detects and absorbs light in the eyes. There are two sources of vitamins a which are animal sources, vegetables, and fruits. A deficiency of vitamin a is more common during periods of high nutritional demand during infancy and childhood. Most common symptoms are xerophthalmia or the inability to see in low light or darkness.
Vitamin D: it is called the sunshine vitamin because it is produced in your skin in response of sunlight. You can also get vitamin D from supplements and a very small amount from salmon. It works to promote bone growth and bone strength. It is important since vitamin D regulates the absorption of calcium and phosphorus, which are essential components for developing the structure and strength of your bones. It is an important factor in making sure your muscles, heart, lungs, and brain work well and if your body is able to fight infections. Too little of vitamin D results in the softness of the bone, this disease is known as rickets in children and osteomalacia in adults.

Vitamin A has a property of defusing 'free radicals', i.e. it can lend electrons to free radicals thus helping to halt their DNA altering chain reactions, it is perhaps the most used form of 'antioxidant' in the human body! A good source is Beta-Carotene, which contains both Retinal and Retinol.

The medical industrial complex's failure to properly research and diagnose and treat diet and microbiome and sleep and vital nutritional deficiency issues (including those related to Vitamin D3 and Vitamin K2 and Magnesium deficiencies as well as iatrogenic prescription medication usage) is a major reason why psychiatric iatrogenesis is a primary contributor to the third leading cause of death in the U.S. (which is iatrogenesis in general). If the U.S. spent just a fraction of the over $40 billion each year it spends just on iatrogenic psychiatric drugs alone, for properly researching the issues discussed in this and related TH-cam presentations we would probably, Lord willing, achieve an absolute revolution in medical efficacy improvement and iatrogenesis reduction.
