Ngl, I seriously enjoyed the Water Temple as a child, often looking forward to it whenever I started a new game. Later on I was exposed to the general opinion, and could never understand why it was so hated. I realise some of the reason why I liked it was the music, which I often literally fell asleep listening to (my dad had stories of walking into my room to see me hunched over, looking like I was upset, and when he then approached me with a serious tone he realised I was softly snoring). It was always so peaceful to me. Also, in regards to the actual Temple, I was obsessed with looking in literally everywhere for items and mapping the place out (7 year old me also played collectathons like Jak and Daxter), so I was rarely lost and often didn't get the felling that I forgot something. Was frustrating at times, I'll admit, but it was a good kind of frustration - I got to listen to the music more and play with the water levels some more.
Well said. It’s definitely grown on me. As a dumb kid I know I struggled with finding all the keys, but as an adult I really enjoy the structure of the temple.

Man, I just got my mind blown with the music from Forest and Water Temples being the same in those bars! This is an amazingly well done video! Thanks a lot for the upload! To me, the best ambiance music is the Forest Temple music. Ironically, and in spite what everyone else thinks, ever since I was a kid when I first played the Water Temple, it instantly became one of my favorites. In fact, as a long time Zelda fan, my two favorite dungeons in the entire Zelda series are Forest Temple and Water Temple, respectively.
The Breath of the Wild soundtrack is the best Zelda soundtrack IMO. It fits the game so fucking well. It’s not in your face 24/7 like other games, it’s subdued and breezes in and out at will.
@@24fretsoffury Only track i can remember is the vah nabooris dungeon. Its creepy and atmospheric. I cant remember a single other track though cause its TOO subdued imo.
@@rustyjones7908 It's definitely not hard, just involves a lot of tedium. "Raise the water, lower the water. Missed that key? Go back and do it again, grab the key, go put the water back how you had it before." And that's if we ignore the N64 boot switching.
For that flute, listen about 2 minutes, 5 seconds in to “Canyon on the Crescent Moon” by John Willams from Indiana Jones. It always reminded me of this, a lot.
I can totally hear that! It's rad to hear excellent composers reaching similar conclusions when trying to make a certain sound, so that we as listeners are imparted with a feeling or vibe.
The Water Temple music brings me so many memories of getting hopelessly lost... And the sound of constant underwater heavy clanking from Link's Iron Boots 😅
Hearing the beginning 'water trickling' bit slowed down actually made me pretty sure its the same note progression as the opening to the zoras fountain theme!
I will never forget that moment at 5:03 in the video. getting to that room with the water at the correct level to use a bomb to get that small key. I must have spent over 200 hours in that freaking temple trying everything going everywhere with the water at every level too. I wrote out maps and planned a proceedure to systematically go through every possible route on each level. I never thought to include going every possible route that had the water at a different level below me. I dont know how i missed it for so long. i felt so damn smart. except i had done all the mapping at school and ignored the lessons my teachers taught for about a solid month. i didnt do any homework either. I just stubbornly bashed my head against the wall until i lost my patience let chaos take over and just started trying random things. My friends all eventually figured it out i never told the secret. i was an asshole as a child.
What I also love about the Water Temple is that its infrastructure logically feels like a temple, a temple being a place people go to worship (or in this dungeons case, Zoras). Forest Temple feels like an abandoned villa, Fire Temple looks like a paradise for demons and Shadow temple is a execution house. Spirit Temple does fit the bill for a temple with the colossus statue and all. And puzzle wise, it does what dungeons are suppose to do, give players a challenge. Encouraging players to keep an eye round corners, pay attention to the map, locate missing chests and remembering rooms. One of the best mini-bosses in Zelda history (testing your patience and understanding of enemy behaviour), a water boss that isn't an evil fish/octopus, but an enormous protozoan is very unique. It's still my favourite OOT dungeon.
I'll agree with you for sure on the fact that the water temple "feels" like a temple much more so than a lot of the other dungeons in OoT. Doing the research on this has definitely given me a lot more admiration for the design of it.
Stunning man, the forest temple sped up got me good, just finished the temple with my tek young boys blown away with the music as per, only had it playing for a good 3 hours this time round, sneaky key in the centre room down there. Cheers for this.
About the samples used, the flute is actually sampling a piccolo. The really high, shrill woodwind scales at the beginning of King Dodongo's theme is the same sound heard in the Water Temple.
You reminded me how much I loved Metroid Prime. That 'Inside the crashed space frigate' is one of the most beautiful melodies I've ever heard. In fact, all of the metroid prime soundtrack is. Songs like the one in the region where you first arrive and don't get me started with Chozo Ruins😱. I strongly believe that metroid prime and metroid prime 2 echoes are the most underrated games of all time, especially metroid prime.
The first things I notice about this music is how much it /cascades/ out of itself, several times throughout the course of the track, and how it sort of echoes back into itself, sort of like refracting light off of the water. It's such a lovely track, definitely one of my favorites.
I honestly never had an issue with the water temple, even when I first played it at 9 years old. I actually got stuck in the shadow temple because I didn't use the eye of truth at the right moment. I was never impressed with the water temple's music, but it did set the perfect mood and actually was soothing.
What ever accent you were aiming for in these intros, this one nails it. Im a bit if a critic. This is perfect dude you should replace all the other ones with this one lmao.... But really lol... (Palpatine voice) "Do it"
Perfect music, and I believe that the Water Temple is one of the better dungeons in the game. Add the easy on/off ability of the iron boots in the 3DS remaster and this temple truly shines. 🤩
Yeah, while I have some issues with the lighting in the 3DS version, the quality of life improvement of letting the boots be bound to a button makes it hard to go back to the original.
Actually, my favorite music is the tune that plays during the Ice Caverns. Like everyone else, I hated the Water Temple when I was younger, but now, I actually really like it.
The water temple is still tedious even to me today. But i love the music even if its a little “Drowned” out... and i love the Shadow link boss fight :D
Just Discovered your channel yesterday and I have to say I really love your analysis. Also I had the biggest smile on my face when you mentioned Dire Dire Docks for good water level music; that tune always brings back such great childhood memories.
Thank you very much!! 😅 We’re still growing, but it’s super hard when you’re still small, feel free to share with anyone you think would like our content! 😄
Water Temple was always my favorite in OOT. I played the game casually as a kid for a long time and would always get stuck after the great dell tree. So there was always this doorway at the bottom of a lake, just out of reach. It teased me for so long because I would fish for hours so it was so close by. When I got older and finally actually played the game I was super hyped to finally find out what was in there and it did not disappoint. I ended up creating a map for a game on steam with a section HEAVILY inspired by the OOT water temple.
Glad you enjoyed! Yeah, I don’t think the Water Temple is as bad as people say. I have forgotten 1 key while going through the temple before and that was a pain to go back and find. 😅
I played this when I was a youngster when it had come out. This water temple took me and my brother months to complete, was absolutely solid. Still 10/10 game many years later, timeless masterpiece.
The bone rattle sound and water trickle sound being the same hit me the same way finding out Peach’s Castle, Cool Cool Mountain, Bobomb Battlefield, and Rainbow Ride are all the same song
Idk what people see when they say this is the most frustrating and difficult dungeon in Ocarina of Time, as a child, all the dungeons were frustrating and difficult.
Try a game that is all water i have played the original Ecco the dolphin and Ecco the dolphin defender of the future i love both of theses games but they are Vary vary Hard.
The 3DS water temple is much less frustrating than the N64/GC/Wii version owing to them mapping the iron boots to the keys instead of making you go into the submenu every time you wanted to put them on
The trickling of water sound at 5:05 always reminded me of the song in super Mario3 after you beat one of the koopa kids and grab the wand and fall to the castle
The music from this, simply incredible!! The nature of water is so greatly reflected in it I feel like, whenever link was dropping to the bottom through the water with this music, it’s like I could feel the actual cold and pull from the water that I’d feel in a pool, and its amazing! This actually felt like a temple to me with the sort of mystical sound of it, having a very solid ancient feel behind it. Calm and free het very dangerous and stern! I love how you’re breaking down what all the sounds really are, I was always wondering about it!
During the first minute you mentioned how Sonic drowning gave kids anxiety. Something I actually did as a kid to get over my fear of this was literally to drown myself, it's like the fear of death but in a video game this isn't a concept that exists and I was aware of that and so, for curiosity reasoning I wanted to see what would happen.. "death wasn't the end, it was a temporary punishment, a setback." Oddly enough this was very good for my early game sense development as it not only helped me at the time to keep myself calm but even nowadays as I can quite literally live on the edge of 1hp and keep a more calm mind... as far as that goes since most games punish you for losing.
Inside the Crashed Space Frigate from Metronidazole Prime is so calming and peaceful that you'd think there wouldn't be a single thing that would hurt you on the level
One of my favourite water level themes is Candlelit Journey from Gravity Rush 2. It's a mostly piano based peice that starts off really slow and calm and gradually grows more sporadic and frantic as it goes. The level itself isn't a traditional water level in the sense that you're submerged for most of it, rather it's the introduction of lunar gravity where you make yourself light enough to stand on top of the water and use it for platforming.
Gravity Rush 2 was one of those games that got criminally overlooked. I only got to play a friend’s copy for a few hours, but I wish I had invested more in it!
@@SaveDataTeam I agree. As far as music goes, while most of It's battle music feels kinda boring to me, it nails every single environmental track. The musical Dichotomy of JPL makes it one of the few instances of a "love to hate" location in games for me. (Lei Havina) The high class ambiance of the aristocratic district that sounds "pleasant" but almost makes you angry. (Lei Camolsna) The fun bumping bop of the commoners marketplace which is legitimately my favoueite song on all of video games. (Lei Elgona) Then the somber depressing drone of the houseboat fleet which is one of the most depressingly realistic depictions of a poverty district I've seen in a game (despite the obviosuly unrealistic flying homes) Add to that the way the city is structured, due to anti gravity the 3 districts are *literally* on top of one another, with the government being even higher up. But worse still is the contrast with the other major city, Hexsville. Again composed of 4 segments, but instead of government, rich, common, poor; It's business, suburbs, entertainment, factory. And instead of being stacked in a physical higherarchy, they are at the same level, each in a different compass direction. Jirga Parah Lao passes me off in the best ways and the way the music reinforces the design plays a huge role in that.
The water temple is probably one of if not my favourite dungeon in the series. I love how you have to think about your navigation and plan your route because navagating is so complex. Getting all the keys was not an issue for me since I tend to use the map and compass a lot for planning my traversal and finding secrets. I played it first on the N64 but didnt mind the iron boots then.
Hydrocity Zone in Sonic 3 is one of my favorite Sonic levels of all time, let alone one of my all time favorite water levels. It’s like a giant indoor water park
I had the Prima guide. I was a huge fan. I gave up on it for six years because I didn't realize I could go behind the waterfall with the rolling stones to get the last key. My uncle laughed at me and showed me where to go one day on a vacation and it blew my mind.
I think I'm one of few people that likes the Water Temple in OOT even back when it originally came out. I think the music is also trying to do like a Zen tone to the temple.
5:02 when he asks if the trickling sounds familiar, my first thought was the Mario 3 fall-from-the-sky-holding-the-magic-wand-after-defeating-the-airship music
Dude dire dire docks from Mario 64 was such a lovely nostalgic throwback, DAMN, I gotta call my grandmother. She watched me play and brought a snack when I was a kid 😂. Love her ❤️ the music stuck hard in my brain, it was buried until you brought it up. Good vid
I get Vietnam War flashbacks everytime I hear Rusty bucket bay's Theme, because on my first playthrough I could not find the last few notes hidden in that level as the music slowly drove me crazy.
String instrument in the water temple is definitely a Kanun, it it also used in the music in the room with the guy who collects poes from you, and perhaps in the potion shop
I remember my cousin and I got so confused on this temple that we stopped playing for a year. When we tried again, we ended up figuring it out in the first few minutes of playing. This level is a troll
Spirit Temple theme will always be my favorite, but every single dungeon theme in this game (including the child dungeons and mini-dungeons) is a masterpiece.
The water will music in Rayman origins/legends is so amazing, its one of my favourite gaming tracks ever. Just thought I'd bring it up since it didn't get an honorable mention
The flute sounds a lot like the ocarina itself. I’m currently playing through OOT ( original version), and despite that I’ve played it through countless times it’s been a very long time since my last play through. I’ve been using headphones and greatly appreciating the atmosphere of all the temple music. The music in this game is pretty much perfect and honestly my favourite temple is by far the Forest temple, and it’s music is so fucking creepy I can’t stop loving it.
Yeah the forest temple is my favorite song in the first game 😅 Glad you’re enjoying your replay! I mostly just replayed the dungeons themselves for this series, but I make a point to replay it in one form or another every two years!
Those Serpent monuments make you think the boss will be Some kinda of Dragon ? Also I still think Dark Link would’ve made sense for Shadow Temple and required Lens of Truth, but as a Reflection it makes sense too
Yeah, there’s definitely been speculation that dark link was supposed to be a mini boss for the shadow temple, but alas, “it is a secret to everybody.”
the water temple is my favourite temple is my favourite, i can never remember where anything is and so it always feels new and like i’m legitimately exploring the temple myself. the music is so beautiful and though yes the temple itself can get VERY FRUSTRATING, it still takes the #1 spot for me
Glad the algorithm led me to you. I never comment on videos but can't believe you have so few views and subscribers. You deserve more! Here's a like and a sub and a wish of good luck!
The bone rattling sounds I have a strong feeling that it’s made from an East Asian ethnic instrument called the “anklung” (might have got the wrong spelling 😅) It definitely sounds similar to an anklung 🤔
Thank you very much! I’ve started doing some research on the shadow temple’s theme, but it’s probably not gonna be up for a couple weeks. I am hoping to find a cool twist like the one I found in this one! 😅

@@24fretsoffury Only track i can remember is the vah nabooris dungeon. Its creepy and atmospheric. I cant remember a single other track though cause its TOO subdued imo.
This dungeon was not badly designed and was actually fun. Fight me.
Reminds me of Yahtzee reviewing Ocarins DS: "I thought the water temple was easy AND YES, I'M SAYING I'M SMARTER THAN YOU WERE WHEN YOU WERE NINE!"
@@rustyjones7908 It's definitely not hard, just involves a lot of tedium. "Raise the water, lower the water. Missed that key? Go back and do it again, grab the key, go put the water back how you had it before." And that's if we ignore the N64 boot switching.
I never played through this game, I got up to the forest temple and got lost and was too stubborn to look it up

@shad0w8
I swear i thought i was the only one.
Even 22 years later . Ocarina of time’s music still gives me chills
Perhaps my favourite music in OoT is from Zora's Domain. It's just... Perfect 👍
Zora's Domain slaps
Same.
Zora domain is gold.
Literally the song that got me into bossa nova.
I love the soft guitar lick on repeat during Zola’s domain theme
For that flute, listen about 2 minutes, 5 seconds in to “Canyon on the Crescent Moon” by John Willams from Indiana Jones. It always reminded me of this, a lot.
I can totally hear that! It's rad to hear excellent composers reaching similar conclusions when trying to make a certain sound, so that we as listeners are imparted with a feeling or vibe.
What's interesting is that the real life place in Petra, Jordan used in the movie reminded me of the Spirit Temple.
The Water Temple music brings me so many memories of getting hopelessly lost... And the sound of constant underwater heavy clanking from Link's Iron Boots 😅
Haha, I heard the exact sound in my head after reading this 😅

I still don’t know how my brother beat the Water Temple in 1999.
Hearing the beginning 'water trickling' bit slowed down actually made me pretty sure its the same note progression as the opening to the zoras fountain theme!
The music of the water temple has an ethereal, calming feel to it. Which is a good thing cause this dungeon was frustrating to me as a child
dire dire docks....... reminds me of my brother. RIP, will never forget spending countless hours playing with you
love this video. so much nostalgia
That explains why the Forest Temple and Water Temple themes are my favorite.
The “eastern flute” sounds more like the same sample used for the ocarina
My dad beat the water temple with his non dominant hand one handed and entirely from memory I meanwhile can't figure out motion controls
Stunning man, the forest temple sped up got me good, just finished the temple with my tek young boys blown away with the music as per, only had it playing for a good 3 hours this time round, sneaky key in the centre room down there. Cheers for this.
Water Temple: Best Zelda Dungeon?
*Stone Tower Temple has entered the chat*
MY MAN.
Arbiters grounds, fight me lol
THE GREAT BAY HAS LEFT THE CHAT
Snowhead stans be like: Mom pick me up I’m scared
Stone tower temple is so hard. Probably harder then great bay and water temple imo lol.
Once again, great video! It's well realized, the rythm is good and the content is rich with a lot of references. Keep it up :)
Thank you very much! I am really proud of how this one turned out 😊
Wow, most water levels do have really good music. This is an interesting point!
Metroid Prime is one of my all time favorites 🙌
I realised that I hated the water temple because I always forgot the key under the floater in the middle section, so I walked around for hours
I love the research done into instruments from around the world. The kanun looks so cool
Thanks! Yeah, it makes me wish I had more time and money to learn a ton of instruments 😅
The first things I notice about this music is how much it /cascades/ out of itself, several times throughout the course of the track, and how it sort of echoes back into itself, sort of like refracting light off of the water. It's such a lovely track, definitely one of my favorites.
Love to see a comparison of the Water Temple and Ice Caverns
I honestly never had an issue with the water temple, even when I first played it at 9 years old. I actually got stuck in the shadow temple because I didn't use the eye of truth at the right moment. I was never impressed with the water temple's music, but it did set the perfect mood and actually was soothing.
Your videos are so underrated, you deserve so much for view and subs !
Thank you so much 😅 Feel free to share! It’s super hard to grow while we’re still small.
I subbed today!
Thank you so much! 😊
Wow this video is so under rated it’s awesome can’t believe I’m still not tired or hearing about this game and learning new things
Thank you so much! Feel free to share, it really helps us get noticed! 😅
@@SaveDataTeam I will I literally just found this channel like 2 mins ago bout to binge watch lol
Thank you! Please enjoy! 😁
I love it when I find other people who know what Conker's Bad Fur Day is.
It was extremely difficult with no Internet back on the day. This dungeon took me forever to complete the first time...
The water temple is an excellently well designed dungeon and I'll stand by that forever.
I really like how you analysis the music, great stuff and very informative
I've always felt the music of the Water Temple was laughing at me.
Yeah, while I have some issues with the lighting in the 3DS version, the quality of life improvement of letting the boots be bound to a button makes it hard to go back to the original.
2:55 Shows Link going deeper underwater: "There's a lot of depth here compared to the other dungeon melodies..."
My fav is the Water Trickeling and how it Lowers a scale to sound ominous !
Thank you! Glad you found us and are enjoying our stuff 😁
I loved the water temple, it was my favorite dungeon in oot
It’s really grown on me over time. It’s def one of my favorites from OoT now!

I think this was my favorite temple (with the spirit one), I always thought it was the most beautiful and the best music
My favorite water level theme in video games is probably Evening Lake from Spyro: Year of the Dragon.
As a kid, I could not solve this dungeon for the life of me.
Wow how did I find this?
Really nice vudeo
The water temple is one of my favorites, as long you understand what is going on, its not so bad.
Am I the only one who loved water temple
I love it!
2:01 I’m really glad you mentioned Metroid primes crashed frigate theme, the OST for Metroid prime is incredible
Water temple is my second favorite temple...
Your videos are awesome. It's amazing to see someone who appreciates the games music as much as I did!
3d ocarina of time is actually incredible, like, one of the best dungeons
"death wasn't the end, it was a temporary punishment, a setback."
Oddly enough this was very good for my early game sense development as it not only helped me at the time to keep myself calm but even nowadays as I can quite literally live on the edge of 1hp and keep a more calm mind... as far as that goes since most games punish you for losing.
(Lei Havina)
The high class ambiance of the aristocratic district that sounds "pleasant" but almost makes you angry.
(Lei Camolsna)
The fun bumping bop of the commoners marketplace which is legitimately my favoueite song on all of video games.
(Lei Elgona)
Then the somber depressing drone of the houseboat fleet which is one of the most depressingly realistic depictions of a poverty district I've seen in a game (despite the obviosuly unrealistic flying homes)
Add to that the way the city is structured, due to anti gravity the 3 districts are *literally* on top of one another, with the government being even higher up.
2:55 "A lot of depth here" what a pun hahahahahah
@5:30 Links face is legit my face mind blown. Teaching me stuff about this game when I thought I knew so much about the music already
There's a lot of depth in the underwater level.
Very nice.
I've always loved this track, but after seeing your video on The Great Bay Temple music, I think I like that even more.
Sky Link's face at 5:34....was me listening to the music as I just wander around the water temple wondering where the hecc I was suppose to go next
Ocarina of time is my favorite game! Thanks for taking the time to put these out!!
It's so awesome to see an analysis of this interesting piece of music. Thank you.
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed!
That one scene from Harry Potter:
"The dragon is trained to expect pain when it hears the noise"
*Water Temple theme starts playing*
"Oh, the key was in a room down there, but how the heck am I supposed to get there if there's no friggin entrance?"
Those Serpent monuments make you think the boss will be Some kinda of Dragon ?
Also I still think Dark Link would’ve made sense for Shadow Temple and required Lens of Truth,
but as a Reflection it makes sense too
Yeah, there’s definitely been speculation that dark link was supposed to be a mini boss for the shadow temple, but alas, “it is a secret to everybody.”
the water temple is my favourite temple is my favourite, i can never remember where anything is and so it always feels new and like i’m legitimately exploring the temple myself. the music is so beautiful and though yes the temple itself can get VERY FRUSTRATING, it still takes the #1 spot for me
Glad the algorithm led me to you. I never comment on videos but can't believe you have so few views and subscribers. You deserve more! Here's a like and a sub and a wish of good luck!
Appreciate it very much! Glad you found us and thanks for the kind words! 😁
The bone rattling sounds
I have a strong feeling that it’s made from an East Asian ethnic instrument called the “anklung” (might have got the wrong spelling 😅)
It definitely sounds similar to an anklung 🤔
The water temple was only bad because of iron boots. And water physics in general. The actual layout and design on the temple is pretty good.
Just subscribed!!!! Please keep doing these videos i love them
Thank you very much! I’ve started doing some research on the shadow temple’s theme, but it’s probably not gonna be up for a couple weeks. I am hoping to find a cool twist like the one I found in this one! 😅
