This guy is my new hero. The laptop scene has intrigued me most. I frequent hipster coffee shops and often feel ostracised. I don't drink coffee. I need this.
I have been considering one of these however with little storage and lack of depth for laying out larger piles of paint for transport and closing the lid with a panel in it I guess it just seems a bit much. If it were to double as a studio workspace for me then perhaps.
Wouldn't you say the whole magnetic thing for the canvases is a bit of an uhmm.. issue? I mean, I know they're selling magnetic back plates you should mount to canvases, but there's no way that's worth $20 + shipping per backplate or something crazy like that. I suppose my question is, can you mount canvases the more traditional way as well? Is the paintbook deep enough for it to allow paint on the palette when closed?
Great questions and observations. I paint on Raymar and Artefex linen mounted boards. The magnetic sliders (no backplate needed) are very capable of holding the canvas/linen boards in place up to approximately 16" x 20" in size. Stretched canvas (with stretcher bars) doesn't hold very effectively. The sliders aren't large enough to hook the painting surface in place. The groove in the lid, surrounding the edge (see video), gives about 1/2 inch depth for piles of paint. The center of the palette has to be clear of paint to close. There is about 1/4 inch depth of space below the glass palette insert. I've seen some artists use it for paint storage. I'm not exaggerating, as a professional artist, I use the paint book every day, sometimes only as a palette. The versatility of setup with the ball head tripod mount is just too useful and ergonomic.
Thanks Cynthia! I'm pretty pumped with it in the studio, I imagine it would well abroad. Now that you mention it, I could use a good reason to get outdoors!
Good question Morgan. Very stable. Manfrotto makes amazing products themselves. Their ball head mounts are incredibly strong and immobile. When I tighten my 496RC2 (what I use in this video) I cannot move it from it's position. The tripod, a Manfrotto 290 Xtra, is very well built, solid and recommended. All together the Paintbook, ball head mount, and tripod make for a quality painting experience.
The tripod is very sturdy but it can be weighted with stones if you buy the piece of fabric that goes between the legs-or just use it for something else-your paper towels?
It's nice to have the storage space with the fabric add on. I suppose you can put any manner of item for weighted stability, stones, anvil, a spoonful of the sun. 🌞

Thanks again for another great video. Blessings and take care.
Great review! I heard from somewhere that there is some wobble because of the quick release+hinges.. do you notice it or find it bothersome? Any thoughts on their LED light? Thanks!
I love the LED light. It is top heavy and can add a little wobble. I wish the batteries lasted longer in the light. It seems on average I get around 2 hours. To the wobble. There is some movement, and give to it. I mostly see this when I'm using bigger canvases 12" x 16" or larger. I don't paint with too much vigor so I generally don't move it when working. It doesn't effect my work. Having used it daily, I can say I'm pretty happy.
Great video, what’s your view on using this for watercolours? Have been eyeing this product off but there doesn’t seem to be any inserts in place of the glass that would suit watercolour pallets etc?, I’m new to all this so just wanted to get your view on using alternative mediums in this product other than oils. Thanks, Stephen
Good question Stephen. My experience with watercolor is minimal. Let that color 😉 whatever I say next. I presume the palette side would have to be near level to prevent run off in the case of watercolor. It could be angled easily that way especially with the ball mount. I know they have a couple of palette inserts (wood or glass as I recall). Under the palette insert, carved into the paintbook is a hollow, recessed area that might be helpful. I could see someone getting creative with that to adapt the paintbook to their needs. With the magnets, you could attach just about anything, but then it might not close up well for transport. Personally, it's been good for me (oils). I work with it everyday. It's highly portable and compact when I'm doing a demo or working en plein aire. If you're afield often it might be worth it to problem solve a way to utilize it for watercolor. I wish I could be of more help!
@@EVWIII I've ordered mine and look forward to its (tick, tock, tick, tock . . . ) arrival. I am oil painter, but do lots of sketches and studies in watercolor. I've already employed magnets, Nickel plated pillow-mint-sized magnets that are super strong, are also very inexpensive, and I set the magnet in my watercolor palette and it holds like it's glued there, so I am assuming this will work well with the Edge Pro. Also, Holbein has a metal watercolor palette in three sizes (250, 500, 1000) that will fit across the glass palette and the magnets will lock it in place. So...should work perfectly with watercolor.

I got a full-sized one. My first thought taking it out of the box : "Oh my this looks cheap and flimsy." I get it's handmade but seriously, my unit looks as a prototype, not a finished product. Main defects: if you want to use it without the tripod, It won't sit flat on a desktop: once you attach a panel, the top part outweighs the bottom, causing the paintbook to tip backwards. You will need some kind of laptop stand to make it sit securely on a flat surface. Second: the magnets used for clamping the Paintbook shut are pretty weak. Ever got one of those MacBooks that won't stay closed? same here. Problem is, this thing has a bunch of paint globs laying around inside so, good luck cleaning up your bag after the paint drips out of the Paintbook. I use a couple of heavy duty rubber bands to keep it firmly shut. Don't get me wrong, the thing works (kind of) as advertised and sure beats lugging around one of those ugly-ass french easels. I just think that for the price they could've gone with better quality, finishes and materials. As for the portability of it, sure, it's slim and streamlined but once you put into your backpack the bunch of other stuff you need to carry to properly alla prima, the bag can still get pretty heavy. In retrospect, perhaps I should've gone for a Strada Easel, Not as flashy and gimmicky but it sure looks a lot sturdier.
Thanks for the reply. I wonder if something has changed in materials. I agree there is no usage without a tripod. I don't have a problem with keeping it closed.
