I am so delighted to watch Dina tell Kristy her beautiful story of how The Knitting Place came to be and thrive. I had the distinct pleasure of traveling to Edinburgh, Scotland, with Dina for the Edinburgh Yarn Festival, and on that long journey across the pond we shared our stories with each other and bonded over a common love of knitting and spreading that love to others. She is one of the most genuine, lovely, and down-to-earth people you will ever have the good fortune to meet. Was in the shop this past Friday for the Long Island Yarn Crawl. It's such a great shop!! And Dina is so sweet and helpful and welcoming! I wish it wasn't so far from me. But I'm going to make an effort to get there a couple of times a year and not just for the Crawl.
Your guest, Dina, has a lovely spirit. I would love to go to her yarn shop. Y'all gel so well!

This is so wonderful, Kristy, for the Nassau and Suffolk county fiber communities. I live in the DFW area in Texas, and so wish we had someone like you to show our LYS’ to our knitting community.. We lost 2 yarn shops this year (one of them being my favorite) You really doing such an important service I hope that you will continue. -Aly

Loved your interview with Dina. Her shop is my favorite and she and Pam go out of their way to make sure you have exactly what you want. They are pleasant and welcoming and everyone should visit her lovely shop. You can't leave there without a bag of something.

Sounds like a really welcoming place for knitters. They all seem to be really nice people and very upbeat. It probably wouldn't be a place I would shop because I crochet and it doesn't sound like that is part of who they are. That being said, it is always interesting to hear someone's yarn story. Thanks for sharing.
I bet they have some crochet chops. Just curious, how do you determine if a yarn shop is crochet-friendly? When I was exclusively crocheting, I also felt a bit like a fish out of water when I visited some yarn shops...
I always look to see what they offer for crocheters. Do they have tools, crochet patterns, classes? I watch mostly crochet podcasts but when you have a yarn shop podcast I feel you should include a little something for everyone. I would think people who weave or spin also feel left out of things. I guess I’m on a little bit of a crusade to get the yarn shop podcasters to be a little more aware of who their audience is. If the owners of the shop only knit, then maybe they could showcase some crochet items, or some woven pieces, or spinning tools from their staff or customers. We are part of a fiber/maker community and we all want to feel included.🤝
Barbara Plautz We DEFINITELY offer crochet. I apologize we didn’t get that across. We should have. You are absolutely right. We sell hooks and have finished crocheted samples displayed in the shop. In fact the Bra you saw in the background was all crocheted. If you have any inquiries please don’t hesitate to ask.

I want to live to 106 or 107! If I’m healthy. I love the knitting place!
Can only drool as Im in Australia. We are losing our yarn shops in parts of Australia which are dying and slowly closing one by one. Its hard to get the european yarns. Postage is exorbitant and takes months now with literally no flights in and out of Aussie. But by the new year our PM has said fully vaccinated Australians will be able to travel but ONLY leave from Sydney.
Yes, to 106. I actually have trigger finger but knitting and crocheting actually helps , maybe because of moving of the fingers

I usually only add positive comments, but the two times I every went to the Knit Place, I was disappointed. Last year I went in for some mini skeins and when I walked in, there was a group chatting an knitting and no one stoped to help me. The space is small and lots of stuff on the floor in boxes - felt like fire safety issue. I have a friend that is there every weekend and she loves the people and speaks so highly of it. I wish I had had that experience.

My grandma lived to 101, her mom lived to 103! I’m already legally blind and had kids after that at 36 & 43. So living to 103 is my goal ❤️🤱🏼I want to hold my grand babies.

I have this thought about "unfriendly" yarn shops. As an introvert, I am sometimes perceived as unfriendly, which is not at all my intention. Having said that, it is very uncomfortable /unnatural for me to be a greeter, and initiate a "friendly" interactions. I know this about myself, and I still find it really challenging to do it. I think that introverts are attracted to knitting, there seems to be a concentration of us in this yarny world. Anyway, I really like walking into a warm and friendly knitting shop, and prefer them over the ones where the owner and employees are not seemingly friendly. .
That is a very interesting point. I do think many would respond that if you work retail, and you are an introvert and it means that you can't be friendly, then maybe you need a different job ? What do you think?
I don't think introverts generally think of themselves as unfriendly. Its the perception of unfriendliness, if that makes sense. Its just a different style of interaction, but can be off putting. Having said this, I have been in knitting shops that are just plain old rude and snobby. Like "OMG why would you even bother to knit with THAT yarn?"
Snobby yarn stores don’t get my money!
