  • Join me on this Christmas Special as I attempt to cure a chronic oil-burning problem on this '96 Geo Prizm with almost 240k miles on the clock.
    The procedures performed here will apply to these 4-cylinder engines used on Toyota Corolla and Geo/Chevy Prizm vehicles 1993 thru 2002:
    1.6L 4A-FE
    1.8L 7A-FE
    Part 1: Intro and vehicle history, symptoms, plan of attack.
    -Pre-teardown compression and leak-down check.
    -Cylinder head removal.
    Part 2: Piston removal/cleaning, piston ring replacement.
    Part 3: Cylinder head valve cleaning/lapping.
    Part 4: Reassembly, start-up, test drive, follow-up.
    Enjoy the series, and Happy Holidays!
    -Ivan, Pine Hollow Auto Diagnostics

    As shared by another your video gave me the confidence to attempt my repair on my own. I ended up having a cracked valve. I replaced that and cleaned the others and lapped them all using a drill (I don't think I did as good of a job as you did). I also changed my timing belt and cleaned my pistons and put in new rings. It is also purring again with 277,000 miles! Thank you, Ivan!

    There is so much of this model here in the Philippines. And parts of these are still very much available and cheap. And you can get a used but not abused one for around 2k . Nice job !! so simple to work on.

      +Baxrok2 Thank you for being a part of it! There's nothing quite like hearing an engine purr after a long job like this. Even the exhaust note sounded crisper than before. It was almost like bringing a patient back to full health after a near-death experience :)

    Nice this takes me way back like car seats. I've had several 4afe powered cars thoughout the years and built a couple of them myself. Only tip I have for anybody wanting to dive into a job like this, when you get ready to install your pistons with the ring compressor, I always recommend buying a bottle of STP oil treatment, and just brush a nice coat all around the inside of the ring compressor, or in a pinch just use motor oil. But the little blue bottles of STP oil treatment are fantastic for assembly lube, it's super thick and wont drip off. I've built several Honda and Toyotas and I always get a small paint brush and use it on everything including the main and rod bearings and wrist pins.

    Good stuff mate...The valves in #3 will fail due to a burn through but for now it's a runner and that's a good thing.

    • @PineHollowAutoDiagnostics
      @PineHollowAutoDiagnostics  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +ZIGgassedUP Thanks man! I might give away a prize to the viewer who guesses how long this engine will go before needing more work. What's your guess in miles or km?

    • @ziggassedup
      @ziggassedup 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I love guessing competitions...3,000 - 5,000 miles and the valves will have a chunk burnt out of them...It's going to run a lot hotter in the combustion chamber now with good compression...I actually think they will fail before that...1,000 miles or so..Be sure to keep us informed..Cheers

    • @artembalashov973
      @artembalashov973 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +ZIGgassedUP Since Ivan's repair I have driven 864.4 miles on the car - so far there is no signs of any problems engine wise. The oil level is still at full capacity, and oil dirtiness is around 25%. It is a huge improvement over a previous engine works, where already at 600 miles almost all oil was burn out, and it was all black at 300 miles mark. With that being said, in my, consumer view, the fix will past a true test if "Turbolet" will still have oil after 3k miles...

    • @ziggassedup
      @ziggassedup 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ivan did good...My 40+ years in the trade tells me you'll have low compression from the valves between 3&5k miles...Hopefully I'm wrong...Oil usage won't be an issue I believe..Cheers and good luck.

    Good work, the videos don't really show how labor intensive and time consuming this kind of work is to those that haven't done it! I personally have stopped messing with compounds and such and just send the heads out to the machine shop. I remember lapping some valves in a Volvo head that has those 3 groove keepers from hell.. Bad memories! However in this case it's worth helping a friend get some new life in his car.

    Awesome videos man! Just watched parts 1-4 and learned a ton. Was keeping my fingers crossed for good compression on those cyclinder 3 valves. I have a 2006 Matrix and use mobile 1 synthetic 5w-30, so I'm hoping to avoid future problems with oil consumption. Currently, at 75K miles, it consumes no oil at all between 5k change intervals.

    • @PineHollowAutoDiagnostics

    Good job young man, only thing I would have done differently is hone cylinder walls with new rings and while you had it tore down replace the insert bearings. Cheap enough and will add mileage to your overhaul. I'm big on corollas, owned several 97 and back are best. All the ones I've owned have gotten close to 400,000 miles! Maintenance and oil changes are the key to longevity. Also grease if you have fittings.

    Fantastic series Ivan. I wonder if the leak down test on # 3 results would show less or more leakage on a running engine as shown with a pressure transducer. I honestly cant comprehend why you didn't replace the valves. Especially when you saw the pitting in them. If this guy is paying to have his motor torn down to this point, a second time, I think that extra expense should have been made.

    • @PineHollowAutoDiagnostics
      @PineHollowAutoDiagnostics  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Nick Palmer Wasn't a question of money, but availability of OEM parts. I would rather reinstall the original pitted valves than new junky aftermarket ones! Also with new valves you have to re-shim the buckets to get the clearances right, which requires a whole set of special shims.
      In any case it would be too much extra time and money spent on a non-issue. I mean if the engine runs just fine, why not just leave it alone?

    • @comingundone27
      @comingundone27 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I will admit I did make the comment before watching the end of the video. My bad on that part haha. I personally leave head and valve work up to my machine shop. I think my comment did come off a little rougher than was intended and I apologize for that. I was commenting on the chance of it not running right when done and have to do work all over again. Anyways, I have watched other videos and like what you do. I am a big fan of Erics channel and could watch his stuff all day, he can be funny as hell.

    My question is why WOULDN'T you replace those valves since you were already in there. They can't be that expensive.

      +Serafin Silva TIME CONSTRAINTS BRO! Of course if I had them on hand it would be a no-brainer.
      So now I challenge you to find an OEM exhaust valve for a '96 Geo Prizm 1.6L. That means TOYOTA MADE IN JAPAN. I refuse to put any aftermarket parts in. Give me a link, price, and expected delivery date :)

      Not criticizing. Just saying If I went through all the trouble, That's what I would do if they looked that bad.

      +motoYam82 It is really hard to find oem parts for older cars. The dealer usually discontinues them after a specific number of years. Same problems I ran into with my 95 Corolla

    For those driving Japanese cars, you may want to find a reliable/reputable JDM (Japanese Domestic Market) parts importer. From what I understand, the Japanese have odd tax laws and other laws regarding what you can drive and for how long... and the Japanese don't drive near as much as we do. The result, lots of cars get pieced out and exported in parts, very low mileage parts.

    Was just wondering if you checked and re-shimmed the valve lash on this engine since you Resurfaced the valves it may have changed the valve lash settings.

    I really feel people 'give up' too easily on engines and want to replace them when they could easily be fixed. In the old days an old engine would be out of tolerance on almost every measurement so a rebuild or a replacement would be necessary. To me this was a lot less effort than replacing the engine.

    • @PineHollowAutoDiagnostics
      @PineHollowAutoDiagnostics  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Andrew Thompson And a lot more effective too. Where are you going to find a used Toyota engine that burns NO OIL? Answer: they don't exist haha

    • @andrewthompsonuk1
      @andrewthompsonuk1 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +motoYam82 agree, I do not understand why but Toyotas are bad for oil rings. It may actually be Toyota owners not the cars themselves.
      Personally I hate engine replacements, lots of unexpected problems like in your latest video..
