Abandoned Houston Buddhist Temple

  • The Palace of the Golden Orbs, sticks out like a sore thumb in the surrounding Texas landscape. The sanctuary of elegance and oddity features a 40-foot orb and two wide staircases ascending to the roof, mimicking those of Mexico’s Chich’en Itza Temple. The story all starts with a spiritual leader of Tien Tao, which has its roots in Buddhism.
    The palace was the life’s work of Kwai Fun Wong, the leader of a Chinese Taoist organization who envisioned a grand Taoist complex of multiple building to include worship, daycare, retail, and residential living. In 1996, the Tien Tao Association purchased an 11-acre property to use as the grounds for their new temple. The structure, a five-story white temple covering nearly 40,000 square feet of space, was priced at over $6 million for the construction costs alone. The main attraction, a giant golden orb intended to be the main holy area, was placed in the very center of the palace, standing nearly three stories high.
    Unfortunately, Kwai Fun Wong’s work was abruptly interrupted in 2001, when she was deported. Since the project was abandoned 20 some years ago, no one has bothered to teat the temple down.

    Oh, that’s so cool. I’ve driven by that place so many times and wondered what it looked like on the inside. It’s had abandoned for a very, very long time. Nice to see some urban explorers. Are checking it out and documenting the property now.

      Thanks a lot for that! Indeed, that was my third attempt over 1 1/2 years to get inside just out of curiousity. Shame that never finished it but apparently plans are in the works for the property.

      It was supposed to be the centerpiece of a Buddhist sect, the leader was arrested in China and they lost funding…. That’s the thumbnail of it….. there are articles about it online

    I live right around the corner fromt this place. It's always been one of those places that just appeared one day and nobody knew what it was. I've literally never seen inside of it and it's sitting about a mile away from home. This is so cool. The theory is that an undocumented person came to build this temple but was reported shortly after the build was complete.

    • @ExploringWithBenandSam
      @ExploringWithBenandSam  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      That is partially true. They never completed the green card process apparently so when they left the country for a funeral they were denied re-entry to the US and since then the project was just shut down. I always had a fascination with this place so was amazing to finally just see what there was. Thanks for watching and commenting!!

      I checked this place out 2-3 times over 1 1/2 years before getting inside. What I had heard, within 3-4 months of filming it, they had resealed the entry point that had "opened" and were actually working on it again to restore/continue construction.

      Well we went in July 2021, so I am sure it has been resealed by now as the popularity of it increased once it was found to finally be accessible. The "entry" was pretty easy to find so if it isn't now, again probably has been resealed.

      I heard the same from someone I know who apparently went to check it out finally. It seems it was "open" for a relatively short period before it got resealed. Think I noted in the video that was 3rd time or so going there over about a 2 year period.
