The scene where Mister separated Nettie and Celie was very real to those two actresses. The actress who played Celie wore padding to protect her from the force of her bottom hitting the stairs, but because of the brutality of the scene, the padding slipped into a position where she wasn't protected at all. Also, Steven Spielberg knew the two actresses were as close as sisters on the set. He told them "For this scene, whatever you do, do not let Danny separate you two. Do whatever you can to stay together, but do not let him separate you." The fact that Danny managed to break them apart was emotionally traumatic for them, so those tears and that emotion were very real.
    It gets me every time.
Also, the actress who played Nettie is from Ghana and is (or was) an African Princess. Akosua Busia's father was Kofi Abrefa Busia and he was the Prime Minister of the Republic of Ghana and a prince of the Royal Family of Wenchi. She was married to the director John Singleton too.

"I think it pisses God off when you walk by the color purple in a field and don't notice it."
Fun Fact: Theatrical movie debut of Oprah Winfrey.
Casting Notes Fact: Mistakenly reported as Whoopi Goldberg's debut. However her first movie was Citizen (1982).
What Script Fact: At the dinner scene, Oprah Winfrey ad-libbed all her lines when she was talking to Whoopi Goldberg. After the scene, Goldberg walked over to Winfrey, gave her a hug, and told her that she has now become an actress.
Emotion Over Experience Fact: Before production, Steven Spielberg felt very insecure about being director of the film. Spielberg felt that his knowledge of the deep South was inadequate and that the film should've been directed by someone who could've at least related to the struggles faced by many blacks living in the old south. Producer Quincy Jones then convinced Spielberg to take the role as director of the film, because of the excellent emotional E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial (1982) direction out of the alien character.

Quincy Jones produced this along with Spielberg. He composed all the music. Genius.

All Celie ever experienced was abuse and people telling her she was ugly and worthless. Nettie did not have the same experience, that’s why she had more fight in her. Celie was beat down and broken down. Abuse was normalized for her, that’s why she told Harpo to beat Sophia.
I’ve always felt that it was out of character for Mister to keep the letters. For what purpose? In real life an abusive person like that would burn the letters.
Harpo is Oprah spelled backwards. It was the name of her production company. Yes Oprah was Oprah at this time. And she did have weight on her for most of the 80s.

This is such a beautiful film. Its one ive been waiting to see your reaction to. The acting, story, directing, score, cinematography and overall feel of this has always stayed with me and I feel the emotion everytime I play it in my mind.
Btw, I felt about the same about Danny Glovers character in this, as I did about Samuel L Jacksons character in Django.

I always thought Mister kept those letters as trophies. Every time he saw them, he got a thrill from knowing he hurt both of those girls. But mostly, he kept them because they were proof that he was hurting NETTIE since she wasn't there for him to see.

It's one of the most amazing and beautifully executed films in cinematic history. I'm proud of you for watching this. It's an intense experience. The book is also a worthy experience. ❤️ God Bless.

Ya, I think Albert telling them what he did would defeat/undermine his motivations for paying Celie's family's way back to the US. Also, I assumed Nettie made sure the kids knew English, but it was an emotional thing, so their first language was how their feelings were expressed.

Gorgeous film. The book is absolutely fantastic too. I feel the musical gives a bit more justice to Mister than this version. They were cool with each other by the end in the book. Hell, Mister was a victim too. The generational trauma that he experienced at the hands of his dad who was most likely an actual slave is never mentioned but you know it’s there. Mister is absolutely terrified of his dad. The musical made it much more clear how Celie was the glue that held this community of people together and even welcomed Mister back with everything he had done to her. The book was written by Alice Walker to give her grandmother, who had a miserable life like Celie, a happy ending she never had in life.

Don’t you find Alice Walkers passionate antisemitism problematic? I mean, she’s an outspoken supporter of Holocaust Denier David Icke. She writes essays on why Judaism should be destroyed. Recently she called for Israel to be wiped from the map. I mean, are we allowed to enjoy her book now?

You sat there and roasted everyone and then was teary-eyed and sniffing in the end! 😂 Fun fact, the little girl with the bow in her hair sitting next to Sophia at the dinner table is Whoopi's real daughter. I just noticed after seeing this numerous times, that there's no footage of her when Danny starts going in on Whoopi at the table. Maybe they removed her so she wouldn't hear her mom being spoken to like that. But if you look at her she looks just like her mom!

I love your reactions! Yes the visit to the embassy was Mister’s atonement he had to follow otherwise everything was going to crumble for him.
Danny Glover was asked by Steven Spielberg to remove the actress who played Nettie by any means necessary from the house, and the actress was asked to stay firm as possible. Danny said that scene was extremely emotional to do. What a fine cast in this film!

"Girl, you betta bash open Mister's head and thank about Heaven later!" love that line.
So as the story goes, Oprah really wanted to role of Sophia after reading the novel. She lobbied hard for the part but was told they'd offered it to Alfre Woodard. She was really depressed over the rejection but checked herself into a fat farm, eventually getting over the fact that she'd never play the role. She swears that on the very day she accepted this fact, her agent called to tell that the Woodard had dropped out and that Steven Spielberg personally wanted her for the role. She checked out of the fat farm and began preparations for the films production.
The scene between in the corn field with Ms. Celie was done in a single take, as Oprah put her all into it. Interesting fact, Sophia's husband is named Harpo, which is Oprah spelled backwards. :)
Also, while Margaret Avery portrayed Shug Avery, her singing vocals were performed by Táta Vega (th-cam.com/video/-Qx6GnSGQNk/w-d-xo.html). The love between Celie and Shug wasn't sexual in nature at all .... it ran much deeper than that, more like a kinship/sisterhood.

    • @LaTashaGreenlee
      @LaTashaGreenlee 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

Well their relationship in the movie might not have been sexual in nature, but the novel is a different story entirely.

This came out when I was 12 and still makes me 😢. One thing I would like to share-we went to see The Iron Claw on Christmas (son loves wrestling, daughter in law likes Jeremy Allen White😂) and there were whole families in the theater to see The Color Purple musical (like Grandma, grandkids, parent, aunt, uncles and cousin) dressed in purple and someone brought arch of purple ballon’s and put it near door and families were taking pictures under it. Made me feel like all was right with the world for awhile.
