The reason behind Haiti’s poverty is mainly due to constant natural disasters. As you may know, Caribbean is constantly threatened by Hurricanes. Other countries get aid to develop. But, in terms of Haiti, they don’t receive enough aid or it is blocked by criminals. Already it’s suffering badly since the 2010 earthquake and haven’t recovered since then.
tbh i think haiti is suffering more due to the weak political institutions and a slew of authoritarian and corrupt leaders as compared to natural disasters. 1.) jean betrand artisde started a local militia group called chimeres that morphed into the present gangs (g9 and gpep controlling port au prince).. 2.) Dispanding of the haitian army further strengthened these gangs in the 90s as armymen started joining them. 3.) the use of these gangs by leaders to provide security, in protection rackets as well as to suppress people. jovenel moise was closely associated with g-9. 4.) international interference such as france forcing haiti to pay reparations for the liberation of slaves, us forcing the killing of creole pigs due to the swine fever outbreak in 80s, and the subsequent collapse of agriculture/livestock industry further creating unemployment that only added fuel to fire.
