    The secret keeper is my all time favourite book! It's so emotional with so many twists I didn't see coming!

    Thank you for this wonderful video! Kate Morton is, hands down, my favorite, current-day author and I have read all her books. The Forgotten Garden was the first of her novels that I ever read; it is also my favorite. Depending on the person I am trying to win over to Kate Morton's works, I gift either The Forgotten Garden or The Secret Keeper. I love that you describe her writing as similar to gothic classics as I have learned I am a fan of these as well. It makes so much sense.

    I LOVE KATE MORTON! I have read four of her books and my favourites are definitely The Forgotten Garden and The Distant Hours. The things that I enjoy the most about her style are the split narration between past and present and the way she portraits women and often elder women (who are kind of my favourite characters in her novels).

    • @LifeBetweenWords1
      @LifeBetweenWords1  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I love that, too! There aren't many books with elderly main characters, especially women. And Kate does it so well!!

    I've read two of her books and absolute love them! My favourite is The forgotten garden, I was so captivated by the story and the way she paints a picture of the surroundings.

      It was partially based on her own family history, with her grandmother discovering that she was adopted.

    Love love love Kate Morton! Her stories and way to tell the stories really works for me too. I think my top three is the same as you have. Before the lake house I thought I liked the best the secret keeper, but now I don't know anymore.

    She’s my favorite author! I just got done reading The Forgotten Garden for the countless time. I read her books at least once a year And each time I read them I don’t want to put them down. Sooo amazing!

      Part of me wants the books to become movies so my husband can know these amazing stories. Then part of me doesn’t because I don’t want the movie to ruin the book.

  • @BaileeWalsh

    I've only read her first three books. I started reading The Secret Keeper at one point but I put it down because there was another book I wanted to read more and I didn't want that to hinder my experience of reading The Secret Keeper, especially because Kate Morton is my favorite author.
    My favorites of hers, and actually they are like # 1.1 and 1.2 on my all-time favorite books list (I group them together since they are by the same author), are The Forgotten Garden and then The House At Riverton comes in close behind it.
    I discovered her books in 2010. I asked for The House At Riverton for Christmas that year; I had randomly found it browsing on Barnes & Nobel's website and it was really intriguing. I ended up reading it over that Christmas break (at this point I was a sophomore in high school). And before I even finished it I knew it was my new favorite book! I loved it! So then that Spring I was awarded a giftcard for having perfect attendance- we got to choose which store of like 3 different places and, of course, I chose the B&N giftcard. And with that giftcard I bought The Forgotten Garden, which I read over that upcoming summer break. I was blown away by it! I couldn't believe it could surpass The House At Riverton, but it did! I love her writing! It's so intricate!! And it's not done in an overwhelming or boring or flowery/pointless way! .. So The Distant Hours, even though it's the only other book of hers I've read, it's definitely my least favorite. I still thought it was good but I was going into it with such high expectations because The House At Riverton was amazing and then The Forgotten Garden was even better, so I though it might continue on that trend. But I set expectations too high and ended up being disappointed.
    I haven't ever reread her books but I know they are books I'll keep forever and I love being in her world. I, every so often, think about rereading them or one of them, but then I think about the books I haven't read, yet, and decide not to. I think, now that I'm thinking about it, I'll reread them at a point after I read The Secret Keeper and The Lake House, since I haven't read those, yet.
    I want to get to The Secret Keeper this year! I think the summertime will be a good time to read that one!
    So that was my Kate Morton story, haha! You are one of the few people I've discovered on BookTube who is familiar with and loves her books :)

    A very interesting author wrap-up. I intended to take a break of Kate Morton after reading 3 of her books in a row, but I'm not quite ready to leave her world at this point, haha. Now I'm really intrigued to read The Lake House- I have yet to hunt down The Secret Keeper and The House at Riverton.
    You have such sweet & positive energy - I'll definitely check out other videos on your channel. 😊

    I have a tradition when I meet a new person I go along well with, it's asking her what her favorite book is or what book she really wants me to read. And whatever that person chooses I'll pick up the book and read it. I like that for 2 reasons, you get to broaden your reading spectrum and you can bond with that person.

    I'm reading The Distant Hours right now and loving it so much. I just love her as an author. Yes she's got a formula that she follows but is it just me or is it really comforting? I still have to read House of Riverton and The Forgotten Garden. I'm eager to read them right away! But part of me feels like I should give myself some space between the Morton books so I can appreciate them more. Hrmmmm....we shall see..... I loved this video! I'm so eager for Kate Morton to come out with her sixth. I know she's working on it right now!

    • @LifeBetweenWords1

      Oh yes. I understand the dilemma! Once I discovered her, I plowed through all her books and then was left with no more to read! But it makes me even more excited when a new release comes out! Once we know the release date for the new book, I may write to the publisher and see if I can get my hands on an early copy!! She's one of my favs. :)

When I went to get the book, sitting next to it on the shelf was also Peace Like a River (which I forgot I owned lol) and The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants series. That's just how they were! I read it as Lo-Anneth but I may be entirely wrong.
    i think the House at Riverton is my favourite but also have a soft spot for the forgotten garden and the Lake House which I finished tonight despite 2 restless snotty children.
    Kate Morton reminds me of Kate Mosse in her time flipping ways, but also very much woeth a read in this genre is All the Light we cannot see by Anthony..... I can't remember but it's an astonishing book.

    I am trying to get into gothic novels and really don't know where to start. I know everyone raves about Daphne du Maurier and kate morton and i have never read anything from either author (criminal considering i grew up in Cornwall!!) I own Daphne's Rebecca and the Frenchman's creek and i own Kate's The distant hours and the house at riverton. I am currently looking at all four trying to figure out where to start!

    Timely. I'm reading Jane Eyre for the first time. I saw The Lake House advertised in Audible recently but I wondered why they were suggesting a book about a movie that came out a decade ago. was that not the same name as a Sandra Bullock movie from the early 2000's? I may have to add this one to the to-read list.

    The Lake House is my favorite, The Distant Hours my least favorite (although I still liked it very much), and I have yet to read The Secret Keeper. I very much enjoyed this video, thank you!

    Thanks so much for making this video. I had The Lake House on my wishlist after hearing someone talk about it, but I forgot why I wanted to get it xD So now you've really convinced me that I should read a book by Kate Morton. I think it's really up my street, I love the gothic genre!
    The editions you have are so gorgeous, I love them!

      My only complaint about my Kate Morton editions is that The Lake House doesn't match her older books! I don't know why they decided to change the cover design so much...
      And I'm so glad you'll give her a shot!! It you like gothic novels, you'll really like her! She's sort of the modern gothic queen.

      Life Between Words Another gothic queen you must know too; Sarah Waters! I love her novels!

      I've never even heard of her, if you can believe it!! I just looked her up on goodreads and she has a pretty big catalog. Where would you start? Do you have a favorite?

      Life Between Words So far I've read two of her novels and recently bought the third. I read The Little Stranger and Fingersmith. Both are incredible, but I definitely would recommend Fingersmith the most! It is incredible. I love her description of Victorian England and her characters are fantastic. There are some very suprising elements to the books as well!

      +Magdalena Berger No, you definitely don't have to read The Secret Garden before you read The Forgotten Garden (but you should read it sometime, just because it's wonderful!). The Forgotten Garden is a great Kate Morton book to start with. I hope you like it!!

    I haven't read anything by Kate Morton yet, but a friend of mine is obsessed with her books, so I want to read one to see if I like it too. Which one do you recommend starting with?

      Grace Taylor you can really start with any of her books! They're all good, so whichever sounds best to you. But if you wanted to start with my favorite, it's The Secret Keeper. :)

    Is the book The Lake House what the movie The Lake house is based on?

    • @isobelduncan
      @isobelduncan 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      No. Two different things. And the movie came out years before the book.

    As someone who doesn't read many mysteries would you say it is safe to start with these books?

    • @LifeBetweenWords1
      @LifeBetweenWords1  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes! They aren't really marketed as mysteries (you'd never find them in the mystery section of a bookstore). It just happens that the stories have a mystery in them. They would be a great place to start for someone who doesn't read mysteries!

    Can you read Kate Morton's books in any order? Or do they have to be read in publication order?
    They seem to me to be entirely separate mysteries but just thought I'd ask before I rush to order some! Can't wait to read some of her books- they sound like exactly my kind of read!

    • @LifeBetweenWords1
      @LifeBetweenWords1  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They're wonderful! And no, you don't need to read them in any order. They're all self-contained stories that have no bearing on each other. Enjoy! :)

      Oh that's great! Thank you for getting back to me! I think I'll order The Forgotten Garden and The Secret Keeper!:)
      Have you heard about her latest novel- The Clockmaker's Daughter? It comes out (in the uk anyway) on the 20th September! It sounds absolutely fantastic! I'm sure you'd enjoy it.
