I have a question that has been bothering me for a very long time? How was the M1903 Springfield designed and built around the 30-06 round? As you likely know, the reason the round is called the 30-06 (thirty-ought six) is because it is a .30 caliber round that was created in 1906. The M1903 Springfield was built in 1903....did I miss something here? I believe it had to do with Germany's adoption of the much better pointed tip ammunition. I believe this might be the reason as I know we (US) also dumped rounded ammunition for the pointed tip rounds used today.
All armies found out when in a defensive position a machine gun is useless if it can be flanked. The British found out when it first used it in Africa, they needed at least a squad of 10-12 rifleman to protect it while giving frontal fire. All colonial powers did the same in practice from combat experience before WWI. First the French employed the mobile automatic rifle squad in their platoons using the Chauchat, the British using the American designed Lewis Gun which was better. The Germans formed the modern infantry squad or section of the future during WWI . The Stosstruppen Battalione, and regiment, using combined arms tactics was a French idea which the Germans, Austrians, and Italians took seriously to mobile warfare towards mid-war and late war. Breach weak points identified by recon elements, infiltrate to those positions, cut obstacles, drop artillery, attack and hold those positions, guide the attacking infantry through the breaches. Works well until the enemy realizes the breach points and counter attacks.
Chauchet has a bad rep but it was the rechambering to 30=6 that didn't work due to tolerances not being correct. In Lebel 8mm it suffered far less issues though it was far from perfect no denying but it was light compared even to a lewis. It really did kick with the retracting barrel sleeve and a nasty bruise on the face if not fired away from the face, and can sieze uf too hot but it was not made for protracted firing and that was no secret. It had a terrible magazine but a good French LMG squad could keep them running in support attack role. It looks like a thing made from bits and pieces from no mans land. For it's time it's not bad and that is how all early weapons should be considered being compared to what was used then not now. The Berthier arguably a better weapon than the Lebel especially the 5 rnd en bloc either added to the earlier 07=15 or newly made. I own both they work well. I do like the the P14 and the M17 designed from the P14. Both are nice.
@@tannstangthing is if you set it too low the long metal rod part starts too dig into the ground or if the gun is set too high your shots go way over your target so that MG was unissued and given too or counties or just scraped intirely.# that part is why our troops called it the potato digger.# you might want too share that information with @slashteam8440 just a thought .
This video needs to be pulled and completely re-edited because it's chock full of mis-identifications and statemenst that are just plain wrong. For example the 03 Springfield was NOT the primary rifle for US soldiers in WWI, that job fell to the 1917 Enfield because it was easier to make in high volume and their were two fully optimized production plants available that only needed a change in caliber.
The firing of those machine guns buy actors was grosss an a disservice to the video,Jesus a school kid could do better ,painful to watch ,I had to fast forward
The SMLE barely got a mention other than it was short and had a rapid rate of fire! The 10 round magazine capacity wasn't even mentioned although it was the largest capacity of any bolt action rifle of WW1, Sorry to say this seems typical of American video's?
Nice. No horrible ai narrator, an actual human! Top job.😊
Um ya Charloton Heston one of the greatest actor of all time, plus an NRA saporter
Looks like blanks don’t cycle the recoil operated maxim that much…

It was originally chambered in 30-03. It was a bottle nosed round and was replaced by the pointed 30-06 round
At 6:31 you can see the American pretend fire his gun lol he just starts shaking 😂
Sir Hiram Maxim to exact :) He got Knight, for "service rendered " :)

Never understood why the Gatling wasn't used in world war one or two.
It was inferior, that's why.

The British were NOT a traditional ally of the United States.
At 12:57 they’re shooting the Germans with an SKS lol
Anyone else notice the chow chault machine gun in a few scenes is just a sks with a body kit?
12:56
They needed Ian and Othias as technical advisors
Yea, verily!@@garethfergusson9538
Chauchat
The US used machine guns long before world war I you might want to put a little more research into your videos.
The Colt " Potato digger " comes to mind
