    Hello Guys; I had a nine pointer mounted about 15 years ago by a local taxidermist. He did an excellent job and its still in great shape. I have seen about a 100 bad mounts in my time which is unfortunate, so if and when you score something nice do your homework and you'll be happy you did. I enjoyed watching this man do his artwork and preserving a beautiful animal for all to enjoy.

      The reason that it might take so long is because they might have a lot of people to work on and also the tanning process takes a really long time but we’re I live they are doing a new tanning process and he said my deer will be back in 45 days so I have like 40 more days left.

    Good job, couple of questions/comments. 1) why using ear insert? Never have, only bondo. Insert found to split end of ears over time. 2) noticed no cardboard strips to hold the skin tight in the impressions, when skin dries, these areas pull away from the form (glue will not prevent). 3) seems like thin thread to see the back of neck, what you using. I use much heavier 4) did you use a high flex wire around the antler base. Starting out found thread never keeps from shrinking away over years. Remember, making mount to last a lifetime, not 2-3 yrs. just some curious observations,, know we all don’t do things the same.

    • @ArtofTaxidermy
      @ArtofTaxidermy  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I do bondo ears on ears thats hard to find or build the earliners for. I havent had even one issue of the earliners splitting the ear skin. I think if you glue them properly they will hold really well, it depends on your tan job too, so the skin shrinks the least. The Cardboards and pins have been used but didnt film it... I use 20 lbs fishing line. it holds any kind of skin.

    • @thomaslefler5242
      @thomaslefler5242 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ArtofTaxidermy interesting on the fishing line, I will try this. It seems would be much easier than using wire. The ears I think are a personal preference like many practices. As for pinning and cards, was really curious how you managed to keep the skin tight to the form. Thanks for the reply, appreciate the knowledge.

    Great work. Shame with the corona. It's killing the business.among other things. Prices of.materials have risen . Forms, .... customers aren't as plentiful anymore. Nobody wants to pay high dollar. 15 years ago I did a DVD on fleshing a deer hide n thinning it in under 40 mins with the bench grinder .wire wheel and stone wheel. For me it was a cost saver, time saver because the price of a fleshing machine was and is still outrageous. I used my alternative and still turned out nice hides but besides the point. Keep up the great work.

      Hi Eduardo
      Thanks for your message. The ear liners I buy are made of plastic , and it’s a factory made mass produced type of a product. If you can’t buy them then I’d suggest you to learn the Bondo Method. I will put together a video in that regard next time I’m doing a big game. In the very old days I have also built them from wire mesh and tape. It works fairly well.

      @@jasonkelley5014 I did some work for a taxidermist and most of the time we are booked 1-2 year in advance. So I might only take 20hr to do a deer but they might not be able to get to it for a couple of years.

      hello, I am a new to this so please dont judge when I ask this but when someone kills a deer, why cant they just cut by the shoulders and keep it like that, why does it have to be taxidermy?

    how many hours does a mount like that take?

    • @ArtofTaxidermy
      @ArtofTaxidermy  4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      this video was about 9 hours in real time. but again the caping, fleshing, shaving part of the work was not even in the video. I try to keep the boring parts out.

      So, if you did include all of the boring parts, what would be the total amount of time on that deer?

    I’m a twin but my father had killed a black bear 20 years ago and he sent it to a local taxidermist and he wanted the arms reaching out and after 6 months it was done for $1,000 the arms were down and it stunk from having a bad tan job likely done by himself but he was disappointed so I killed one 3 years ago along with my twin he has a 1/2 mound bear and mine was a big full body done great a job done longer like a year is when you can trust the job is done right like the deer was

    Only human beings will spend thousands of dollars to kill, then more again to pretend the animal is alive so he can boast of his great hunting skills. Such hypocrisy.
    This is not diminishing the craftsmanship involved.

    • @ArtofTaxidermy
      @ArtofTaxidermy  3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Well that’s a very interesting point of view.. also we need to keep in mind that: the first pile of money that hunters spend to harvest an animal is the reason we still have animals. All that money goes toward conservation of the same game. The second pile of money is not to pretend it’s the animal is alive , but is to keep the memory and excitement alive for years to come. The money generated by Hunting industry is the only way to conserve the wildlife since no government is willing to pay anything to wildlife conservation. That’s why they call it sustainable.
