"Chao" is an Italian expression. The correct spelling however is: *Ciao* and it can be used to say either "hello" or "goodbye" much like the Hawaiian expression "Aloha"

about the "is hard" bit, why should we use the particle が and not を?

For example, in the case of "べんきょう が たいへん(Studying is hard)," "Studying" is the subject. In the case of "にほんご を べんきょうします(I will study Japanese)," "Japanese" is the object of "study."
