4.8 TURBO BOOST IS NOT THE SAME AS AN ACTUAL TOWER CHIP RUNNING AT 4.8 GHz!
(the cpu will run at 2.9GHz, the vast majority of the time which is nothing special for a tower or 'desktop' computer') when you hit the render button, ONE CORE out of the 6 will run at a higher clock speed.) Linus could have told you that.

Val T use either Imovie (free from the App Store and easy to use) or Final Cut Pro. I reckon Imovie if your a beginner.

It's a thin silicone membrane under each key now that's making the keystrokes softer and quieter, also the wink wink totally not bot totally is the dust fix.

You can get the quality of a desktop, in a laptop, if you put a stationary desktop sized object beside your laptop, lol. For editing on FCPX - totally get it, but if you just want graphics oomph for gaming, it's still more worth it to put the extra cost over a GPU towards building a desktop for it.

Would be really interesting if it makes a difference to the iMac Pro - it is already super fast, but more speed & power is always good, especially that it’s not expensive to get one or even two (if that is possible to chain them)

Copiryte good question. I have the entry level iMac Pro and the fully loaded MacBook Pro touchbar both from earlier this year, the price is not far apart, and the iMac Pro destroys the MacBook Pro!! I hope that helps 🤓
I'm assuming you mean the egpu, well if she has the high end iMac with the Vega graphics, the answer is no, it would actually make it worse, as the egpu is a 580, which is far inferior than a Vega 56 or 64 (if I correctly understand that an egpu works the same way as onboard graphics)
You are probably right. I was hoping it would use both, but I think it would only use 1 at a time like the onboard graphics. So I will stick with the iMac Pro :)

I’ve been watching ijustine since she unboxed the iphone4s. I was getting one and wanted to watch people inbox them and saw her video
The eGPU hold an AMD Radeon 580. The iMac Pro you have has a Vega chip. If you don't run something that can use them both at the same time, using the 580 will slow it down. You can also get a Vega 64 as an eGPU, which won't really be faster than the iMac Pro, but apps that can use both at the same time will be crazy
I wonder what apps would support both?
iJustine well, DaVinci Resolve is one I know that supports multi-GPU. The paid version can handle at least 12 GPUs at once. Not sure if the free version is limited to 1 or 2.

iJustine use the vega64 for the MacBook Pro
We use imac pro 18 core with egpu, but the blackmagic one is really not going to maximise the speed. We have a sonnet 650w with a Vega frontier edition running with the iMac pros Vega card and running two 16gb Vega cards in metal with davinci resolve studio 15 makes 4k 60fps editing and exporting extremely fast (and everything else). You can't use 2 gpus with the free davinci resolve , need to pay for the studio version ... .well worth the money however if you want the fastest Mac editing system. The black magic egpu is designed really for a MacBook and considering it's the 580 8gb (which was in the imac 2017 if you paid extra) it's a good cost effective option.

Just to be clear, Blackmagic isn't Apple, and that isn't an Apple solution. Blackmagic is an epic company that builds every type of pro video gear. Apple selling it is just a handshake deal.

Benchmarks show that the i9 version thermal throttles to the point where it is almost matching the i7 in terms of performance. The chassis cannot keep up with cooling the i9.
i9 thermal throttling is even worse than i7 model.

The eGPU is the size of a separate computer tower. Lol
That eGPU only has an RX580. The IMac Pro uses a Vega 64 I think, so the iMac is MUCH faster.

on top of that thunderbolt 3 and display on the macbook pro display itself will lose 15-20% additional gpu performance

Do you think the base model 15” would be ok for video editing ?
I’m working off the 13” without the touchbar now. I didn’t see use for the touchbar so got the cheaper model without it.
I want a larger screen and need portability. Debated a new iMac as my iMac is crazy old and lags when doing video.
2300 for that base model is getting up there for me. I edit off an external drive completely so the internal size is not a huge deal. The ram is though.
i edit videos on macbook pro late 2013 i7 and its good but not for 4k rather, maps from google maps are little slow though
Sean Ozz Do not buy an iMac! These things are was above their value. If you need power, configure yourself a normal desktop pc. For one grand you already get up to 6-8 cores, a powerful gpu and ssd storage.
ponzopa I’d sure hate to have to replace my whole set up beyond just a second laptop. AirDrop and all the things I use it for art would be out the window. The seemlessness between all my customers phones who come in and my iPad and procrete and my stencil maker not to mention Final Cut Pro. Saving a few bucks would be nice but the rest of the change over would suck so bad for me.
Sean Ozz so don’t get a new 18 MacBook Pro get the 2017 or 16 version probably be good enough for you just don’t skimp on specs you need
My opinion, get a gaming laptop. Like an Asus ROG. Pay the same price get a ton lot more performance out of it or maybe get a Dell XPS if you want something similar to the MacBook. The DELL XPS 15 the fully charged model costs as much as a base model MacBook Pro but yet the XPS 15 it's better as it comes with 8th Generation Intel® Core™ i7-8705G Processor, 16GB DDR4-2400MHz Integrated, 1TB M.2 2280 PCIe Solid State Drive and a borderless InfinityEdge UHD (4K) touch display and also a Radeon™ RX Vega M GL Graphics with 4GB HMB2 Graphics Memory. All for the same price of the base model of the 15 inch MacBook Pro. And the Adobe products are great as I use them on a daily basis for photoshopping, video editing, animations and even making websites.

You really think a mobile CPU will beat a Server Grade CPU? The processor in the MacBook it's not even near a computer grade CPU what about a server one.

There are games for Mac just not a lot. Fortnite is supported on Mac OS which is a very popular game rn. Also you can just install boot camp and use windows, don’t know if it works with boot camp cause I don’t have one but I assume it does.

She didn't really roast them and they're not necessarily haters when they're right. I love her content and her enthusiasm for new tech. But that eGPU is so not worth the price. Why pay $700 for a $200 GPU that will lose about 30% of its performance due to the induced I/O and processing overhead of the external setup (especially to combine it with a machine that will drag it further down with its CPU thermals)? To top it off, it isn't even upgradable.
It's so much wasted money that it isn't even funny anymore... I'm a Mac guy when it comes to my work laptop. But supporting such a product isn't something I would personally do.

What about the server Linus built you???
She has a lot of her old projects like from 2015 stored in a pile of hard drives. She now dumped all those projects on the server. Also after she finished the project she could send it straight to the server easily trough ethernet. The server is not meant for editing on it but more for storing stuff on it.

There’s a rubber frame under the keys. It’s there as they had problems with dust getting under the keys. The decreased volume of the keys is a result of that. It wasn’t an intentional thing, just worked out well :)
