Programing is likely the reason most fangames don't finish. It's a dirty, long and tedious job, but someones got to do it.

Well, since the highest viewed videos on this are spreading what is basically misinformation I thought I would do some research and find out what actually happened. Turns out the story wasn't as clear-cut as most people thought.

You should really check undertale yellow now when its out. It's so good many people compare its quality to the original game and it brought back a lot of people to the fandom

in the dusttale section, that attack isn't undodgeable, while not a lot of the attacks are fair in that game or really fun to play sometimes, that attack you showed can be dodged you just have to keep moving, the idea of the attack is it shows you how the attack works and then covers the attack up with a mask that's the same color as the bullets, the mask itself doesn't hurt you so the thing hitting you in those attacks is the bone itself

I don't think that turn based menu games are inherently boring, they will get boring when the game isn't challenging or varied enough to make you stop and think about what you're doing, and pokémon, mainly single player games are the def of just press the attack button to win
Maybe I should have said: "In most games, turn-based systems are implemented in the most boring way possible which consists of just pressing the a-button." Would have probably been more correct.

Interesting to see Storyshift or Undertoad's controversies weren't brought up since in my opinion, they are pretty significant in terms of how the original creators dislike of other fan content of the AU that doesn't properly represent the original work. Especially with Voltra wanting no takes on Storyshift what so ever.
Also interesting to note that Undertale Green and Understory are in the process of being remade/remastered as a whole, since Undertale Green plans to have major changes to the first two chapters like rewrites for characters and a wider scope, and I think the same is for Understory aswell.
Also don't know how you missed this but Don't Forget is not only planning on having an update that will have more story focused content and such, but also get it's own game that's singleplayer and basically a deltarune fangame. Don't Forget has went through many many changes throughout it's development from 2016, multiple rewrites and redesigns from RickyG upping his standards and wanting to be more unique which means he leaves quite a lot of unfinished stories behind.
Very good video however that covers some great misconceptions and topics.
Also Undertale Yellow is going to be completed and releasing this upcoming winter too.

There were too many controversies to cover so I took 2 of the most well-known ones and one that was less well-known.
Did not know about Green but if they keep the original ideas that would be cool.
I've heard about the Don't forget update but chose to not include it since it wasn't important to the whole point. I hope it gets that update though.
A long time ago I remember watching either YuB or Merg or Linz 4 play don’t forget ( like the first ever one ) and I swear one of the videos actually had an ending … so I was surprised it was actually unfinished and rebooted
I still find it funny how Voltra said to not do ANYTHING with storyshift, yet the community did it anyway.

Undertale Yellow is the only Undertale fangame I've ever bothered playing because of how well it was made. Being in development since at least 2016 and being fully released not too long ago, it's on par if not better than Undertale itself imho. The gameplay, art style, sprite work, story and sound track are all beyond phenomenal. Also, cowboy underground (aka The Wild East)
I'm only halfway trough, but so far I agree. It's fantastic! I'll admit I had a lot ot trouble with the fights tough, but I'm bad at dodging in general so it's probably just me

I mean, visual novels are just books. Not games, books. Undertale vidyal novels are probably more similar to webcomics than they are to actual fangames, and there’s nothing wrong with that. I find it weird to attempt to shame someone for reading books, when by comparison, playing games is a far less socially acceptable hobby than reading books is. It’s like being into gore porn, and then shaming people for having a foot fetish.

Fun fact about Horrortale. It's meant to be a continuation of a Neutral run of the main game, where Frisk goes through the Underground as normal, maybe killing a few monsters, and eventually kills Asgore and stops Omega Flowey, the human souls are lost in the ensuing fight, and Frisk then leaves. Leaving the Underground at square one with their escape plan and without a king, hence Undyne taking over as queen. Specifically, if you get a Neutral ending where Sans tells you that Toriel returned to rule, attempted to enstate a policy to view humans as friends, then Undyne led a rebellion against her for enforcing such a law and forcing her to retreat back to the Ruins, that's the ending Horrortale follows.
I read Horrortale. I really liked it.

This is one of the few indie games that blew up worldwide and made well known game devs teams want to meet the creator and work with them on music or games.
This game spawned endless ost remixes, AUs, fangames etc. I never saw that much dedication for one game like this. Undertale is huge in Japan
It is still small compared to other games. Something being huge in Japan is almost insignificant to the rest of the world. I guess it depends on what you think big is. Given that even people that play games don't know about Undertale I would call it small.

The song MEGALOVANIA being so popular it has a Wikipedia article dedicated to that song and how it can be considered a Genre,
Mainstream news and journalism covering Undertale Yellow's release with it having a Wikipedia page which is incredibly rare for Fanmade content in general,
The internet flipping out with audiences of everyone watching Smash Ultimate's reveals absolutely flipping out over a Sans Mii Costume more than most full characters revealed for the series,
Sans being such an insanely popular and recognized character that he constantly shows up in all sorts of memes and animations and such everywhere with most of the modern internet has seen him,
And Spamton having garned a similar fandom,
There being a number of dedicated fans from languages the game is not even localized into,
Toby Fox getting attention from massive companies and legendary developers and such including many of his inspirations and making music for Pokemon nowdays (the most popular and profittable franchise to ever exist)
And being genuinely one of the most popular and successful acclaimed Indie games to ever exist,
Is somehow "small"?

Undertale's popularity eclipses a massive number of different franchises, including many made by leagues larger companies.
It's not the No1 most popular series ever on earth, I don't think anyone is claiming such,
But it's an absolutely massive sensation of a franchise that is incredibly popular, influential, and mainstream,
To call it "small" is absolutely ludicrious insanity, the franchise is incredibly popular with a massive fandom that is incredibly active 8 years later.
And it's like,
Incredibly widely known that this series has an incredibly passionate large fandom that makes an insane amount of crazy fancontent.
Heck, even Zun, the guy who made Touhou, liked Toby's game, and Touhou inspired Toby to make Undertale. (I'm pretty sure, though I might have slightly misremembered something.)

Two things.
1) Undertale Yellow is probably the first fan thing I've had any interest in in a long time and I'm so glad it was finished, great game.
2) No, regular turn-based combat isn't bad. It may not be your thing, but to imply that it's objectively bad is just wrong. There are SO many purely turn-based games that have a lot of strategy involved. Just look at the SMT games, Etrian Odyssey, hell, Pokémon can also fit there depending on how you go about playing the game. Not every game benefits from real-time combat or real-time elements, and some would actively be hindered by it. It's actually kinda annoying how you keep calling turn-based combat as a whole braindead when many games actively disprove that. Just say YOU don't like it and move on.
Anyway, obligatory RIP Overtale, still sad about that even about 6 years later. Lol.
Hm, I wonder which game would be hindered by real-time combat. There are in-betweens like pause combat. Also by mentioning SMT, Etria Odysssey and Pokemen you proved my point. 3 of the most repetitive, boring and straight trash turn-based system ever conceived by human beings. I don't like it and yes it is still trash. Both can be true.

Neat video, since I don't see many people covering this topic outside of ut fandom ut fan projects and such. I have some toughts/few cents to add on whole on ut fangames stuff since I have been in ut fandom for a pretty damn long time now.
First being in regards of many cancelled ut fangames out there. I think the other reason besides it being somewhat hard to do (because of all coding, making assets, coding motivation, interest and such) is because most often then not they were done by like teenagers/kids who weren't really experienced in stuff like this yet. I don't think any teenager or kid would want to work on some of the hard/ambitious stuff for very long. At some point they switched to doing stuff in Scratch and similar stuff since it was generally like easier. But it didn't allow much room for advanced stuff, only like battle encounters which leads to the next point.
At some point in time, certain large part decided to focus on doing geno related content only. Specifically last corridor sans like boss fights, which eventually lead to some bad rep, since some people got annoyed at like unoriginality and banality of it. Didnt help there was some drama related to one of projects of it. but that is different can of worms i dont want to mention here
Regardless of some questionable stuff and generally average/bad fangames, I am kind of glad ut fans to this day try doing it. It really shows their passion for the game. Besides, there are actually very cool fangames/projects out there like Undertale Red, Bits and Pieces, TS!Underswap and Inverted Fate's battle encounters and others. I think once Undertale Yellow gets released, that it will motivate people on doing fangames and like getting better at stuff like coding and such. Heh, one of the reasons that motivating me into making pixel art more was because of projects such as Undertale Bits and Pieces to get me better at my craft. I think thats a positive thing from what I see. (also fun fact, person behind Undertale Red, taxiderby became a coder for Deltarune chapter 2. Who would think that someone making an ut fangame would later go and help toby in deltarune. I surely didnt.)
So yeah thats all I have to add. I would also recomend checking Undertale True Geno out since my pal works on this.
Thanks for the aditions. Like I said. There is potentially an endless amount of games that I could cover but I think this was a nice vertical slice. Maybe I'll cover Yellow in full when it comes out.

Honestly your opinion on visual novels is purely subjective. I remember playing an Undertale visual novel (sorry that I can’t say it’s name I played it 3 years ago) that had a pretty engaging story. This was a fully finished game and it even had a second installment in production no idea if they finished it though.
If the story is engaging and if the decisions are engaging and if the pacing is fine and if the visuals fit the story you can have a good visual novel. Most visual novels have bad pacing, visuals that don't fit, are not engaging and decisions that are either useless or meaningless.
Subjective? Yes. Support by personal experience? Yes. How many visual novels have you played in your life? 10? 20? I have played over 50 and I can say with certainty most of them suck.

There's so many controversies, events, and beautiful labor intensive projects that have been made. The fandom has created some of the most meaningful things I've ever seen, and some of the worst.
I love it and it's so interesting hearing about the years of work that's been put into the world. Before this video the only fangame I knew was fully done and released was Undertale Yellow. It's lovely to see this much effort dedicated to covering them.
I just wanted to give my quick thoughts about Deltarune and the whole not wanting to play it until its finished.
Personally, I think it's okay to play them even if the game while it isn't finished (at least it's free!) because while there's an obvious over arching story, each chapter is so self contained and alot happens in them, I kinda like spending all this time between chapters to kinda think about them, explore them, and kinda dwell on them for a while. I like those gaps between chapters. My worry when the game does come out and all the chapters drop at once, I'll marathon through the game and I'll lose the experience I enjoyed when I was able to kinda just sit and think about one chapter at a time.
I get that. I played Undertale in a very weird way. I got the message of the game and thought to myself. I have to leave these characters alone. Let them have their happy ending. The same way I feel about Deltarune. I am going to play it once or twice and then I am going to leave alone. Not because the games can't be replayed but because I just want to keep that emotional connection intact.
@@CarlolucaS I'll be honest here. After I beat Undertale, I was so moved, I moved my save file into a flash drive and keep it safe because I like to think that by doing it that way, I'm securing everyone's happy ending.
So yeah, with Deltarune, I totally get where you're coming from! I don't know what's different with Deltarune, but I still have this strong emotional connection, and to me it kinda feels like I'm checking in on some friends every now and then to see how they're doing so far.

I had an idea long time ago in playing a lot of Visual Novels (I got quite a few in a bundle) but I went through 2 and than I had to give up. Maybe someday a lot of people have recommended DDLC.

Hey i'm no JRPG person but recently replayed one that i played abit as a child and it's character abilites are surprisingly decent and fun despite the Japanese to English translation being ok-ish. Although i can see why raw turn-based combat can be boring.
It often is boring. Not that you can't make a turn-based systems fun. You can make poo out of gold. It is still shaped like poo. There have beens hybrid systems that are interesting like the Valkyrie Chronicles games.

PS!Outertale is having a massive revamp in its story right now, despite the original demo being mostly completed. And there are plenty of more minor differences in the story already in the later portions of the game.

I can confirm that the fandom did twist my au to there liking or at least the one character they cared about being my sans from my au called toasttale while fanon toast sans has a single move and a design canon toasttale goes into a powerful being creating there own universe and dieing there and making a being to replace them being the creator which he then went on to make toast sans this is a very simplified version of the toasttale story but i just wanted to mention this the actual toasttale story has 4 chapters but i was never driven away from the fandom just because of the fans ruining one of my characters most fans of my work don't even know about any of the other characters in toasttale or it's story so yeah i know this is nowhere near the scale of what happened to other aus but just thought i should mention my experience
Often things get spread and afterwards you can't really find if it is true or not. I really tried to figure out why the guy just up and left but there was pretty much nothing.

Noticed Underfail section, that fangame is based on an already existing AU made by a spanish speaker youtuber called DeiGamer (who got outed as a pedo btw lmao)
It was supposed to be a parody of the original Undertale but the AU went a little bit too far and it just wasn't a joke AU anymore just random bullshit specially with the Chara (named "Chora" here)
A lot of AUs tend to run away from the og creation.

Damn im late to this party. Im surprised Dusttrust didn't show up at some point in this, seeing as it has an extensive history behind its still ongoing development with multiple reboots, controversies, and even though you don't pay too much attention to the music of these projects, this au helped put the concept of "edgy sans metal theme" on the map. Not only that, but as niche as the AU is, i have seen way more than my fair share of takes on Dusttrust actually kind of getting off the ground. It's still up in the air if any of them will stick the landing, but i can name a solid three of them i think are very likely to actually be finished, that being Preleak, Canon and Scarlet Flare.
The "canon" game has been in off and on development for almost four or so years last i checked, with countless restarts and a few change of hands. However, with its newest rendition, i can confidently say it might finally be finished and released within this year, or early next year, and having been here since day one of its manifestation, it feels like an end of an era is coming for a select portion of the fanbase.
It's a very strange thing to say, but I feel genuine sentimentality for this dumb little Sans fight. I feel like i watched it grow up into it's own thing, past being a derivative mess into a somewhat better and more interesting mess. Hell, if you look at how much work has gone into this AUs creation over the years, it makes for a genuinely inspiring tale, literally built out of the determination and ironclad wills of the fans it has congregated over the years. Im not gonna get into the psuedo philosophical stuff about how the au has underlying, melancholic self aware themes or what have you though, we'd be here all week lmao.
Still, if there were ever a fan project i can say has had genuine love put into it despite its flaws, Dusttrust is that very project. And i fucking love it because of that.

There’s recently been some big drama from within the team of those projects, which has effectively not only restarted progress for Underswap and Underfell but also caused most of the team to leave. Outertale was also never worked on throughout all of this.
So those projects are in a limbo state for now and it’s pretty uncertain if anything more will come from them, they are leaning towards cancellation.
Oh, I've been pretty much disconnected from Undertale.
I know you gave PS!Outertale quite a lot of flack here, and even compared it to the likes of Undertale Orange and thought it would end up okish quality due to how much it borrowed from the source material. But ever since the second area demo released of it, that probably couldn’t be farther from the truth.
Sure it’s not going to completely blow you away and be a completely new experience from Undertale, but it kinda subverts your expectations on this being a full on reskin, because there are some really cool elements, including a new hidden route and genocide route with a much different story than the original.
As of 2024, the full game is about 80% complete and is nearly finished, and compared to it's initial beginnings, as in when it is shown in this video, it has changed a lot and improved a lot that make it even more of it's own unique experience and it has a lot more replay ability than what Undertale had, with many different variations on neutral and pacifist combined. Including a plentiful of original content in the later half of the game on neutral and pacifist by themselves.
I might revisit it at some point.
@@CarlolucaS 3 months later the area 3 demo has released, and it’s pretty good. Still needs a lot of patches to be fully enjoyable and fun. But the originality in this area is much bigger than the previous two as it introduces some new mechanics and makes a significant amount of changes from the original.

The fangame is on track to being completed at this point, as it's had a fourth area demo released back in May 2023 alongside many improvements to earlier areas and is roughly 80+% complete now. But considering it should only take until Spring 2024 for the game to be complete, then it's best to wait for that, since there will still be many changes to earlier areas.
It's defiantly going to be a pretty special project for also releasing close to Undertale Yellow. Though it's not going to have as big as an impact as that game due to still mainly being tied to Undertale as a whole and not being a full on new experience for most players.
Also must say this video still holds up very well a year later, and I have yet to see another Undertale fangame video of this scope done by anyone else that doesn't just cover single battle fangames and the like.

Where can I get it?
Visual Novels would be more akin to interactive Novels or RPG's, choosing options to impact the story. They can have elements of gameplay, but the main focus is the story and presentation. I loved playing DDLC, and didn't expect to play it for 6 hours straight for the first half, then skipping to spoilers in youtube videos because I couldn't handle horror in the second. I also enjoyed Katawa Shoujo (surprisingly so), something that somehow came to be from 4chan-users and still had real emotional impact and consequence of choices, and I am no sucker for romance (or more) usually.

well done video. However i wanna quickly give my take on something you mentioned in the Controversies chapter. If i understand you think that fanartists should expect that their work and AUs get twisted themselfs and that therefore a annoyence is understandable but it should have been obvious. From the stories you told i see a pattern of poeple creating a AU, that AU being very popular and other fans twisting it further. I think the main issue in these cases would be not that the og work gets twisted or something but rather that it isnt made clear enough that these changes (like making underswap sans more kid like) werent made by the creator of the AU. It is a twisting of the art but in these cases the actual intend of the creation is getting lost.
It was more so and example of people just making shit up and having nothing to back it up. Like every time I tried to ask around nobody had tangible evidence to prove anything. Your guess is as good as mine and I think your guess is a bit better.

@@CarlolucaS It's wonderful. Not as incredible as the original, but that's a pretty high bar. I highly recommend playing it, especially because it's free. You may have to look up how to get a special kind of armor before you play though, if you're not confident in your abilities to beat a Very Difficult boss fight (either route).

I didn't mention quite a few games either out of time or cause I didn't find them interesting or they didn't fit into he whole video.
For now, I can highlight three fanganes takes on Dusttale, the one you mentioned was good for its time, but it was not great in all its aspects, those three that I'll say are promising. They're: Stretch's Dusttale, will be a full game with many Sans encounters and some other characters, the first version is avaible, seems to be very creative with it attacks. Team Delusional Dusttale, man, this one got a good writing, seeing for the teases, seems to be the great, so do the attacks, but can't say too much, the game isn't completely done anyways. And finally simply "DUSTTALE" man, the musics form this one are great, the artstyle is dark, and fits with the game, the atmosphere, this will be a full game too, having new boss fights just two with Sans if I'm not wrong, one in the end of snowdin or somewhere in Waterfall and the final one in New Home. Well, I hope those get finished, they're seen to be very promising.
There are a lot of fan games that look interesting but unfortunately they never go anywhere.

It really sad that they rather give big rewards to triple A games that is made by companies instead of indi games with great praise. By the way TSUnderswap is closely having an update release. There was this favorite fangame of mine and that is Disbelief Papyrus, it was cancelled by FlamesatGames (The creator) and instead we only got the unofficial version. Bonetale is my very, very, favorite I play it a lot on my phone and it has new updates!!.

what if there was a undertale fangame back in 2013-2015 it would be very hard to make one in that time because undertale was not out yet but there was the demo so I wondered how it would look like sound like and act like there could not be something like underswap as asgore or chara or temmie did not exist back in the demo so it would be intresting if people tired to pull that off only using the undertale demo as information I wonder how it would be like only using characters from the demo and just any undertale fangame through 2013-2015 in general
You can probably write a book on certain fangames cause they have an extremely interesting development history. The problem is that information is really hard to come by the wiki can be extremely unreliable.
This reminds me a lot of Deltarune fan bosses for chapter 3.

This was not in any way a history of undertale fangames. This was a review of a random assortment of undertale fangames with no corrolation to their date of release.
Entertaining video, but not what i came for.

You should have played the original horrotale by sourapple studios. It is in an entire different genre being a point and click with hand drawn art, and for once it skips the ruins and starts in snowdin. Fixing pretty much all your gripes with the majority of undertale fangames.
It also has really good atmosphere.
I never thought I'd hear the words "dylantale" uttered again in my life. Truly a work of art.
Not sure how you missed this but clicktale has boss fights, sometimes they show up randomly while clicking and you can purchase essentially tickets to fight them. They range from what you'd expect from a clicking boss to actually masterfully crafted avoidence games. Also you can go straight to the secret final boss the instant you boot up the game because he's hiding on the logo in the title screen, but in my opinion hes not the best boss in the game, to get to the best boss you have to beat all the other bosses first, he's the third to last final boss.
The second to last final boss also shows up on the title screen after beating the previous one and getting all endings.
Also the game has 2 sequels.
Clickertale 2 has an entire original story with some new characters and locations that takes place where the last fame left off (yes these goofy ass clicker games have continuity) the clicking aspect has been greatly sidlined and the gameplay has genuine depth to it. The boss fights are incredible and some of the late game ones rival touhou in difficulty of their bullet hell patterns. Its one of the few complete full length undertale fangames.
Then theres clickertale 3... which isnt complete yet but really has no justification existing. They so easily could have just put the final boss with the main villain at end of clickertale 2, the game was long enough, but they decided to squeeze an entire other game out of it, it has even more depth than the first one, but its basically a giant filler season before the final show down.
It's especially dumb that there the final boss with the main villain DID exist in the 2, but locked behind a multiplayer mode for some fucking reason.
Not sure why you hate the slendertale jumpscare so much, i personally have its sound effect ingrained into my mind and when i think about good jumpscares it's one of the first that come to mind.
You should also show it in the video to clarify your point.
Slendertale also deserves credit for being one of the few games that take place in frisk's house on the surface.
I beat the intended final boss in bonetale on a laggy crappy phone when i was 13. Hate to say it, but that sounds like a skill issue.
The only time toby has ever beefed with someone is when mat pat put undertale tags and wouldn't stop talking about undertale in a stream about heartbound. You putting heartbound in a video about undertale fangames has probably got you on toby's hit list.

Underfail its a fan game of a fan series of a spanish youtuber, the series got cancelled like 5 years ago (i dont actually remember it because i didnt followed that youtuber, but i remember it), so it was not supposed to be a game, the fan game its just a copy of the like 3 episodes that the series had and its prob not even updated, so thats why it was so bad. (just checked it out, there are 10 episodes)

i do feel like you're way too critical on some of these games when they're probably not for you in the first place. i mean that specifically with stuff like the more traditional turn-based and visual novel fangames. you should've just left it at "these games are a neat concept, but they aren't my cup of tea" when it came to discussing the gameplay present.
Even very well received executions of the Turn Based Battle Systems like Pokemon the concept is barely driven beyond "press a to continue" but status-effects and super-evolutions. Sorry, these are not furthering the turn based battle systems and given that most Pokemon games need to made harder by self imposed rules it shows how badly it is executed. Persona seems to really try to alleviate a lot of those issues and further the genre but even those games have their pitfalls.
@@CarlolucaSpokemon IS a franchise for casual players so it really shouldn't be a surprise that the game made for children is easy but i do understand your gripes with the genre. i'm not a huge fan of them myself but whenever they do mix things up and make things a little more interesting through actual actions to perform outside of dialogue prompts i do really enjoy them

Well, in a card game, you don't have to mash a button through random encounters to level up so that your stats are sufficient so that you can finally beat a boss that usurps most of the mechanics that you have been though through the game cause designers love to just give up on bosses and just make them immune to everything.
Compared to a card game where you don't need to repeat the same action over and over again and both parties can adept to their opponent's tactics before and mid-fight.
Don't know about you but one seems less boring than the other :)
