If black is not in your palette and you feel you need to wear it for social reasons, i.e. funerals, etc., just go with the deepest color in your palette. It will still look appropriate yet flattering.

I have a funeral coming. I'm a true spring and struggled to find an appropriate colour suit. In the end I went for one of my neutrals and am teaming it with a chocolate shirt

My mind and eyes just don't see what other people see because when Christie holds up the winter palette, I think she looks really great with those colors next to her skin. I also can look at a color and I am POSITIVE it's a cool (blue~toned color) but I find out it's a warm color! I get so frustrated at myself; I doubt I'll ever find the colors right for me.

As someone who had her color analysis about 5 years ago, it is such a game changer. I am a WINTER, so i can wear black, but this comment is not about that. It is about getting your colors analyzed. Such a powerful tool and amazing. I love walking into a store, scanning and knowing right away that my “colors” are there or not! . Highly recommend color analysis. Just makes you feel so good!!!

I think as a Teenager i gravitated towards purple because I looked good in it, my eyes looked really striking and my skin healthier. I instinctively just chose purple when buying new clothes because I knew it suited me. But then people started commenting, calling me "purple girl" and asking if I wore any other colour. Of course this really knocked my confidence and I didn't wear purple again for years, which is a shame as I really do look good in it. I'm trying to slowly bring it back into my wardrobe now that I'm in my 40's as it is much softer and more flattering than black or grey. But that feeling is still there!

I struggled with my colors for years. I colored my hair a deep blackish brown and got a ton of compliments on my hair. Was draped multiple times and for some odd reason I was always at odds with it. Until I realized what I was really looking at in the mirror. Now I am finally feeling at peace in my summer colors. And I’ve gotten rid of 90% of the black in my closet. I am so happy now with my clothes and how I feel in them. Lit up like a Christmas tree in my soft cool hues!

I live in nyc and have worn so much black. It was not until I was teaching remotely because of the pandemic that I realized that black was not for me. Looking at myself in zoom meetings forced me bring in more color. Now, my closet is filled with warm prints. I now love getting dressed and wear black sparingly. I never thought that I would ever give up black.

Finally!! A stylist who doesn’t push a black wardrobe! I do not have one clothing item in black in my closet. I use navy and grey as my neutrals and lots of beautiful tones. I discovered DYT which has helped me dress in my colors and style. The right colors on a person is a game changer!

I've never liked black (or solid white, for that matter). I prefer clear browns, navy and beige for pants, skirts and jackets. I own the old "Color Me Beautiful" book and know I'm a warm spring and look best in those colors. Trouble is, it's always been harder to find those colors, though I've found well-made clothing, shoes and purses in thrift stores over the years that I've hung onto. I don't care all that much about trendy styles at my age (near 70). I definitely get compliments when I wear coral or peach lipsticks. And it never seems to fail that when I wear the right color scarf, I get compliments. The dark cool colors up around my face bring out lines and circles, and I look unhealthy. I'm happiest when I keep things simple. I like to get out there and look but really don't buy much of anything anymore.

This video is so interesting! I have noticed that as women get older (that's me), black tends to accentuate darkness under the eyes, the sagging areas around the mouth, and hollowness in the cheeks. My cousin says, "Black is classy, and anyone can wear it." I disagree.

I'm a natural dark blonde with dark blue/gray/green eyes with a fair skin but because of my Native American ancestry I can't tell if I'm olive (cool undertone with a warm overtone), warm, or neutral - definitely not straight up cool toned cause I look sickly in cool toned makeup. I can get a decent warm tan when I'm in the sun a lot. I wear black all the time and love how it looks on me - friends have told me that I look great in it too. I've also been able to wear both cool and warm colors and look great in them so I don't really know what my undertone or palette is lol. Jewel tones definitely wash me out but somehow black works. I tend to gravitate towards warm tones and neutrals. Bright and pastel colors as well as stark white wash me out too. I'm so confused haha I feel like a paradox- help!

I think a way to wear black is to opt for shine (like satin), it will be a bit better, than matte. Scarves can help to add the ideal colours next to the face and to counteract certain neutrals (that are less than ideal, but often they are expensive or well fitting costumes / suits). Or a wide neckline. So the face is framed by hair (that is a hopefully a good match to the type) and the skin tone.

I know it doesn't flatter me but it's so hard funding clothes I like in colours that suit me I end up wearing black because it's available and matches easily. I don't live near many clothes shops and buying on line is a waste of money on delivery and return as colours are rarely as seen on screen, and sizing and measurements rarely accurate.

I'm a light Summer, and black ages me now. I wore it when I was younger, but now it looks awful on me...WAY too overpowering. I guess it always has been, it just didn't bother me back then. Now I wear Denim blue, medium toned browns or grays. I don't usually wear dark colors since the contrast is just too much, even Navy or Chocolate can look a bit dark on me. Thankfully I'm a neutral undertone, so I can wear cool and warm tones, with light to medium value intensity really work better, especially now that I'm getting older. You're Right! Wearing flattering colors really makes your style pop, and adds sophistication too. It really makes a big difference!!

I am not sure about Cher, because her hair looks harsh and unnatural, but I agree that black works on her with her hair as it is... I'm transitioning to gray right now, so I'm noticing lots of dye.
Also!!! I'm noticing what a difference my hair makes in what colors suit me. I have a little bit less contrast between my hair and skin, plus of course my hair is more neutral (I don't think it's cool, but definitely cooler than my brassy dyed hair). Anyway, I'm enjoying trying to figure out my new coloring!

I definitely can wear black but it needs to be true black on a more fluffy fabric (so that even more light gets absorbed) and not washed out or brownish black. Pure white on a non transparent fabric without a touch of yellow/creme is also great but difficult to find and difficult to keep. But according to color theory this is impossible because my hair color is too warm and not dark enough.

My first introduction to color palettes that match your skin was in the ‘60’s when the book Color Me Beautiful was published. It helped me tremendously! In time I came to believe that ex. While orange looked terrible on me I could wear light peach if it tended more toward pink than orange. I am glad to find that you talk about more than the basic 4 seasons! More for me to explore! I am now 72 with white hair. I do think I look better in some jewel tones than I did when my hair was medium brown. Perhaps I have always had a palette a little off from the summer I always tended toward! I’m still learning!

I discovered colour analysis last month and found it very interesting so I bought a online analysis since the in person had too long waiting list. And they told me I am a true autumn, I was a bit disappointed as I live in black but start buying some of the clothes in that colour palette. Then yesterday I had a in person consultation although I was wearing BB cream on my face and there was no natural light (a company was doing free in store consultation in a famous shop brand to promote both the consultations and the new collection I guess), and they told me I was winter 😩🤣in a way I was happy as I was hoping for that colour palette in another way now what? What’s the truth? 😖🤯

i surely have a neutral undertone and i have no idea what my season or color pallet is. sounds weird but every color i have ever put on looked good on me😭 white or beige makes literally no difference. if i wear smth clearly cool/worn i just blend in and look as if i am a true winter or autumn

I was told my worst colors were cool/light aka the summer season… i was typed as a dark autumn but dark & especially muted colors make me look dead. I have a terrible time with creams, nudes, tans… yellows pretty much ALL autumn colors except the more cool colors. Still most of my life I thought I was warm toned but I’m olive… I did the gold/silver fabric test silver was definitely better … at first I thought the gold was cuz I looked VERY GOLD 😅 but then I noticed my teeth and eyes were also really yellow and with the silver they were bright and white. Then I tried a bright silver necklace and a gold necklace with all of my shirts and with the silver necklace almost everything looked stunning even my brown tops. So I definitely think I’m cool undertone… but I have always loved gold hoops. So I think I can wear gold buts silver is better. Also, while I can wear black I am not totally convinced it’s one of my best colors. Winter colors seem to be better but still feel like I’m struggling. The only season left is spring but it’s a warm season 😏 …. Maybe I am just not meant to wear clothes😂😂😂

Is it the same case for white then? I’m also a warm spring and see that swapping whites for cream or warmer whites much more flattering!

Yes. Crisp whites only work best on the cool seasons (winter & summer - but there are exceptions). Warm toned ppl look better with slightly brown/ beige (for autumns) and slightly yellow (for spring). I'm an autumn & crisp white doesn't flatter me, but cream/ beige does.

Will one's color analysis change as we age? I've lightened my almost black hair as I've aged because it just seemed too harsh against my skin (which used to be very fair but is now light-medium). I feel the colors I used to look good in aren't a good match anymore. I can't figure out if I'm warm or cool. Is it possible to be neutral?

I have blonde hair and brown eyes naturally and I feel like I don't fit in any of the seasons because of it. I'm pretty sure that I'm neutral but in that case I wouldn't fit in to seasonal color analysis at all. I'm between soft Autumn and soft summer.

I'm not the type to wear makeup and I've never been into fashion (T-shirts and jeans have always been my clothes of choice) and shopping has always caused me anxiety because I've never felt good in clothes. I've been trying to learn about finding clothes for your right body type and skin color/undertones and it is so overwhelming.

Black clothes are almost impossible to do without, bc a lot of basic items are available in black, and no other color, or almost no other color.
I just do my best to keep black from the area around my face.
I always say: Black is not a good colour for when you are sad, tired or sick, not even if it usually looks good on you.

    • @ChristieRessel

@@ChristieRessel Possible yes, but it takes time and more money these days. When I was younger there was always dark blue, but there has been a period of black and at best off black ... and sports clothing and that kind if functional clothing has been very heavily into black for a long while.
Usually I have a problem finding basic nonblack winter tights, shoes and boots especially since I am not much into brown either. And sportswear. One shopkeeper told me she took in mostly black so that she would not get stuck with with too much that would end up on the sale.
Another "funny one" is gymwear, and pregnancy clothes, for some reason shops seems to overestimate the number of women with larger sizes (L-XL) who want black gym clothes and the women/girls in small sizes (XS-S) who want bright colours and pastels in flowery patterns.
