Nice video! You have gained a new subscriber. I have been a Canon shooter for a few years but a chronically sore right shoulder prompted me to try the OM-1. I have not been lucky enough to find the 150-400. I do bird photography as a hobby so for me the cheaper lenses have been fine. I use the Panasonic Leica 100-400 zoom and the marvelous Olympus 300 F4 Pro. I typically use it with the 1.4 extender but have found that the 2X works really well at f8. I traded my Canon gear for the 300 and the TCs ( plus a couple of “normal” lenses from MPB My whole birding package with the 300mm F4 was about 4500 USD. I can carry it all day. My shoulder still gets sore but not so bad that I have to stop. I have not regretted the decision to go with the Om-1. It works really well for what I need it to do. In some situations the bird detection and AF speed is better than the R5 and R6. It also easily outpaces the Canon AF on the R7 when the light gets more challenging. I have found that 20mp is fine if it is combined with good glass. There have been some bird shots with the 300 F4 Pro that it feels like you can crop all day without the image falling apart. It starts with the glass.

Mike Lane, FRPS, owned an A1 + 200 - 600mm and compared that set up to an OM1 + 150 - 400mm. He sold his Sony gear. Make sure you test out the OM1 ProCapture for BIF. I use it when capturing birds taking off and landing. I have mine set to SH2 @ 50fps. For a truly professional demonstration of ProCapture, check out the TH-cam channels of Mike Lane and that of Roger Hance, FRPS. They both own and use the OM1 and 150 - 400mm f4.5.

When you're testing the OM-1 for birds in flight, popular wisdom has it that the C-AF+Tracking doesn't work, but the subject detection works really well. Some people use subject detect +tracking, but everybody says that C-AF + tracking should be avoided. Interested to see your take on this.

I'll give the win to the OM 1 right now. Occasional use of 120 frames/sec has to be worth something. Preburst, longer range. Longer maximum reach, the zoom vs cropping.
The fairest test though would be with the Olympus 300mm.

I rented the a1 and the 200-600 mm lens for a week. Then I was able to get my hands on the OM-1and the 150 to 400 PRO. I ended up buying a new OM-1 and 150-400. The lens was a better performer and better thought out ergonomically lens than the Sony 200-600, especially under lower light situations. I never would’ve been able to afford the Sony 600 so never did rent that one. You should try to get a copy of the Olympus 300 f4 for comparison to your Sony 600, knowing FOV will be similar but DOF won’t.

Went on a hike with a friend, I have an om1 and currently using a decent pl 100-400mm. Still waiting on the 150-400mm that hopefully I will have in my possession by May. I traveled with another friend that also has an A1 and 600mm but 600mm stayed home because he did not want to risk checking in a $13,000 dollar lens as baggage. I don’t blame him. So he brought his 200-600mm with a tc 2.0 instead. The hike was awesome but he could not keep up with us. That 600mm just weighed him down. We are all same build and age. Had a great time with my Sony friends although ripping them all the while about using up all those super expensive cf cards, every couple of hours they had to trade them out. Shooting moose’s and bears at 30-60 fps. A moose or bear at that frame rate! Really didn’t matter made an awesome memory. Had a great time and next time with my 150-400mm that will fit inside a carry on bag. In my opinion there is never a perfect lens or camera gear. My 02 cents.

Even though, my 2 x OM1 and the 300mm F4 lens already cost about the same :-). I love to shoot big animal as well so having two bodies with 40-150 F2.8, 200mm F2.8 (Penleica lens), 300mm F4 and 2 TCs really provide huge flexibility for me. Last but not least, those are terrific images you captured.

I’m chuckling watching the start of your video. A Sony shooter with an A1 and 600 f4, maybe the best bird and wildlife combo existing today, considering the M43 system.
Please do another video six months or a year from now documenting which system you use the most. I’m willing to make a small wager which one it will be.
Hint: bokeh is great but also a bit overrated - and very overpriced.

I moved from a Canon R5 and a 600mm F4 plus 1.4 extender to an OM-1 and 150-400 1.25TC as I wanted more portability. My view is the OM-1 is broadly similar to the R5 for AF capability on birds in flight and perched birds. The lens is very sharp throughout the zoom range with good reach. I do miss the extra MP's of the R5 on occasion but in terms of the end result the two systems are far closer than the price and weight difference would suggest. Is the OM Systems better than the Canon's IQ? No, but it's very close and the weight difference makes using the OM a far more enjoyable experience than the Canon. I get shots I wouldn't have got with my Canon gear for the simple reason I can carry the 1.9kg lens plus 700g camera all day. My 600mm f4 was 4.8kg before the weight of the camera is added. I will be interested in your findings.

Not really fair comparing a fixed 600mm lens against a zoom lens. I would take the 150-400 over a fixed 600 any day as it it much more versatile and a much shorter min focus distance. As a BIF tog I'm happy with that and I didn't expect a £1800 camera to be as good as an A1 (£6500) or R5 (£4200) but it appears to be close to an A1 (see mike Lane FRPS comparison video) and very similar to an R5 where it matters to me. Thanks for your comment 😁 i have returned the 200-600 so no more comparisons with that one 😏 The reason i found the OM set interresting was the otical reach vs cropping and it does even out the difference some 😁 its also easyer to shoot action "loose" in the frame and crop in than have to fill out the frame. There are also better low light performance with the A1 etc. But that said i love the OM set for portability and versatility and prefer that over A1+200-600. I don't know the OM-1 in terms of AF and realtime AF, but I'm pretty sure that is good, like many others. The main key is how consisten is. We know the Sony A1, where its AF is very sticky and precise. Of course there are some situations when it fails, as all cameras, but it isn't the point. Having you tried the OM-1, what about its realtime AF ? Thanks Dennis, as always your pictures are really good!! Take care.

Thanks Giuseppe :) yes tried different AF modes this weekend and its very consistent, especially with bird tracking ON. I haven't used it enough to directly compare, i need to be familiar with the OM-1 first. One thing i like very much is the video tracking can be activated with a focus point and a button! not like the A1 where you have to use the touchscreen :) I always use the EVF for video so i really needed this feature .. but im not sure how sticky the video AF are on OM-1 yet .. time will tell :)

I am interested in your comparison.
Since I use the 300mm I would like to see that too.
And those who don't think it is interesting to compare:
    Well, everything is trade-offs.
If the Oly is close in sharpness, a bit farther away in noise, but lighter to carry and at a lower cost, then the question becomes what do _you_ value and how much of the bad stuff are you ready to accept to gain the advantage.
Thus, comparisons are necessary, and the evaluation will be personal.

I believe the real test will be the hit rate on birds in flight. Until we get capture sequences that can match those of Mark Smith and the Sony A1 system, we do not have proof of the OM-1 + 150-400mm F/4.5 being a world beater. Neither of the two big camera stores in NYC have had the OM Systems pro lens for several months running. This is unobtainium, which makes comparisons difficult.

Do you not find the paper thin DoF of an extra-long lens on FF to be a distinct disadvantage?
The Ollie 150-400 has got to be the heaviest and most expensive (£6,500) mft lens. It is without doubt a superb lens, one that I cannot afford. Instead I opted for the PL100-400 on the Lumix G9, smaller size and half the weight, coupled with the insane stabilisation, allows it to be used hand-held for BIF. For many wildlife shots 400mm on mft is too long. It is also possible to port a Bigma onto mft, probably a Canon fit electronic adapter best for AF and OS.

In your comparison, can you test side by side 150-400 @ 500mm vs the 600/4? In many real world situations, I have to use the maximum zoom. The Sony setup will still have the advantage of an extra 100mm on the lens, but I'm curious how close the M43 setup will be. That is, A1 shot at 600mm cropped to same framing as OM-1 shot at max zoom with 1.25x engaged.

    • @DennisJacobsenWildlife
      @DennisJacobsenWildlife  ปีที่แล้ว

Exactly my thoughts 👍🏻 if the more reach of the MFT setup minimize the 50mp advantage of the A1 😁 im gonna test both at 400mm (800mm) and with build in TC ar 500 (1000mm) first impression is its super sharp in both focal lenghts .. im more interested to see the perfomance in action shooting because here the A1 + GM600mm are crazy fast and precise 📷 i dont expect the same from OM-1 + 150-400 .. but are this setup "good enough" to leave the A1 at home sometimes 🤣

I think it all depends on your expectations and use of the images. How big do you print? It's impossible to tell FF & MFT images apart at A3. If you post on social media then the likes of Facebook bin most of the image data on upload. Do you view on a 4K hi res screen as even then I believe the maximum they can display is about the 8Mb mark so all that extra resolution could just be going to waste. What's good enough and is the ultimate image quality actually needed. I'd wager very few people actually need the image quality provided by a flagship camera and 600mm f4 prime. I'm a case in point.

I think the only mistake is comparing them. Why? they are two completely different systems. Why should there be a better one? Just shoot, do the best you can with both. One or the other have strengths and weaknesses. Only those who don't shoot and look at the latest model need this. Furthermore, the final answer will always be: "Well OM1 is really good with its lenses, but it's a pity it doesn't have full frame like Sony to do hyper bokeh". As if the most important thing was to make bokeh in the photos, absolutely avoid even the slightest noise. Wake up people, take real pictures, don't look for the new best camera.

The GH4 was probably the first camera I found that could actually AF and photograph the "black cat in the coal hole at midnight", the D600 could not. The F-number tells us how much light goes through the lens, and only that, sensor size is immaterial. At one time photosite (pixel) size was a factor but new tech is making this meaningless. The 20Mp have less noise and more well depth than the 16mp even with smaller pixels. If we consider the read noise then the A1 is noisier but has a little more DR at high ISO (in FF but not when cropped to APS-C). A lot of using a camera in low light is how you use it. There is a tendency to grab the fast lens in bad light when often we need to close the aperture to keep the image sharp in poor contrast (that does not work well with wildlife needing a fast shutter).

As Olympus User since the 4/3 days, I’m surprised to hear the important point: The A1 with the 600mm Is superior (thats a given), but how far are they away. Will it worth the portability, the price etc. … Exactly thats the Point. For some the trade off is perfectly fine, for some it is not. However, I have to warn you about this lens (i have one). Once you get a hang of its usability and excellent performance you will see things differently. Sharpness wise there should not be a lot between these two lenses, but the usability is a different league. Two things you should consider : Give it a try with the MC20 at daylight (effective 2000mm) and please consider the close focus distance of 1.3m even at 1000mm. Great for the small stuff like garden birds, dragonfly, butterfly’s etc. and then once you get used to the Olympus system, try ProCapture, Live ND and Handheld Highress Shot. Will be interesting to hear, what the viewpoint of this will.

The most underrated feature of the 150-400 is the close focus distance, because most think with that reach of effective 1000, lets go after Birds, Animals etc. but the up to 1.3m is great for the smaller stuff as well - mice, snakes, mushrooms, dragon flys, larger bugs etc.etc.

I don’t recommend you do this trade unless weight savings is your only concerns or if you have medical condition. If you can manage the A1 and 600GM, you should keep it. I shoot Nikon, D6 and Z7 II and 500mm f/4E VR FL and 180-400FL. The issue with micro four thirds is low light. You’ll see when you start raising that ISO, it can’t compete with cameras like the D6, R3 or similar due to the tighter megapixel count, smaller pixels. Don’t get me wrong this is an incredible setup and more than enough for most, I’d be perfectly happy with the kit reviewed. Until I start using it in low light and since I am a photojournalist, low light ability is huge. Plus in my opinion the bokeh is horrendous on this 150-400mm 1.25x TC lens, unless it’s very far away or you’re very close. Many of the images you showed had terrible out of focus branches, and specular highlights looked strange in the one image. Some images look really good, but enough of them were ruined by the bokeh for me at least, I’d never trade for that. I’ve used the A1, A9 II and 200-600mm, 400GM and 600GM. The A1 and 600GM blew me away, and changed my thinking on Sony. Not enough to sway me into switching but I was very impressed. That 600GM is incredible and definitely the sharpest 600mm I’d had ever used in 25 years, if using big primes. I’ve pretty much owned or shot every Canon and Nikon super-tele made for the past 20 years or so! Working in the breaking news and sports for newspapers has given me access to pool equipment and relationships with Canon/CPS and Nikon and NPS. So that’s how or why I have shot so many setups, including a few Sony setups. I wouldn’t even consider adding the 150-400mm 1.25x TC and OM-1, unless you can afford it and only plan on using it in good light. Yes, I’ve seen what DeNoise AI and other software can do, but I’ve also used many cameras and nobody can argue that the micro four thirds can compete with some or even most full frame cameras of modern days. I’m obviously though in a rare class of people who need professional support, great wireless, Ethernet and all of that, but regardless I do shoot a lot of wildlife on my free time. More often than not, I’m not using above ISO 3200, but even at 3200 ISO, I can see a big difference between my D6 files and micro four thirds files. Putting these files through noise reduction also shows a noticeable difference. The D6 files need far less noise reduction off the bat so if you take those sliders down, your end result will definitely look more realistic. Whereas sometimes these noise reduction softwares give you that waxy look, where it seems unnatural to my eyes. Anyways long story short, you already own thee best setup, I don’t think you’ll be happy shooting two systems or trading one for the other.
