Utah Football lost the 2023 Rose Bowl to Penn State Football. What went wrong, and what plays made the biggest difference in the game?
Cam Rising left the game but was this his final time playing for the Utah Utes? Despite the loss of a few Utah Football players like Ja'Quinden Jackson.
On today's episode of Locked On Utes, JT Wistrcill breaks down Utah's loss to the Penn State Nittany Lions.

It wasn't tied when Rising left the game. Penn State was up 21-14 after Singleton's 87 yard TD run.
True but it was still a game, anyone's game and everyone knew it was going to be a battle of 2 pretty even teams. From what I saw it looked like when Cam went out the wind sucked out of the Utes, was very bazaar to see this with the Utes. Didn't help seeing Bryson come in and quickly throw a pick. Credit to Penn St to circle the waters like sharks to bury the Utes, well deserved and absolutely the right thing to do.
@@ckstaff obviously you don't know football if you think he "got the wind knows out of him", he hurt his knee and absolutely not Penn State was seeing success on offense and even with Cam Rising they were struggling moving the ball throwing the ball down the field.
@@ckstaff even Cam threw a pick earlier in the game, Sean Clifford was the one who didn't throw an intersection when all you Utah fans thought he would so.
As a utah fan, even either cam we lose. Maybe we have 1 more score but penn state was just better and played better and deserved to win
@@averagebloke4474 LMAO, I didn't say Cam got the wind knocked out of him.
WE ARE....
The Utah punter is a great actor.
as a penn state fan you have to blame rising for the injury. he, instead of sliding he decides to plow into 3 defenders and tuck his head down to make hard contact. not a very smart play on his end but praying for a speedy recovery
PENN STATE FAN HERE TOO AND EXACTLY these guys will try to say they lost because he got hurt, idiots
Me and my friends said the same thing at the game like why not slide or run out of bounds but choose to get lit up instead
It’s not his style and I don’t blame anyone. Yes in hind sight I wish he slide but that’s not what he’s done all year.
PSU fan here. I think the Utah fans are class. I think the Utah media and bloggers grew increasingly overconfident heading into the game to the point it became disrespectful. PSU didn't have any flashy wins this year, but our only two losses came to playoff teams and we basically blew everyone else out except for Purdue (B1G West champion) and Northwestern (bad weather conditions). The Utes got a lot of hype off the USC win, but I think that diminished right before the game when they lost to Tulane.
Despite missing our #1 CB, #1 OL, and #1 WR, there was still going to be a talent deficit since we still consistently recruit at a higher level than the Utes. We actually lost our best interior lineman, Langdon Tengwall, back in spring camp. Chop Robinson, who caused so much chaos that your RT got benched in the 4th, is a 5-star sophomore DE who transferred to us from Maryland. And we had the #1 ranked true freshman QB on the bench to replace Clifford had he gone down like Rising.
I'm only saying this to say that we can play the injury excuse as well so it's a wash. I agree the flow of the game would've been different had Rising stayed healthy, but he doesn't play defense and we basically took our foot off the gas early in the 4th quarter. If our starting offense and defense had to stay locked in for a full 60 minutes, you still would've lost by at least two scores. You would've had to win a shootout and Rising had a really hard time passing the ball when our starting CBs were on the field. Though Rising is tough as nails, he plays a dangerous game absorbing contact and needs to start sliding if he returns.
Utah is a really good football team and deserved the top 10 treatment coming into the season. The problem is that PSU was criminally underrated when we started off unranked and people weighted our 2 losses as being more than our 10 wins. People forgot that we were still the third-best team in the conference that sent two teams to the playoffs, and our style of football matches Utah and Utah never played itself this season. Clifford is not a very good QB, but he had his legacy game in the Rose Bowl so we're happy he went out on a high note. Lambert-Smith has big play ability, but he's super inconsistent so he had his second big game of the season at the right time.
Lastly, I heard this on a PSU recap, but Utah playing Cover-2 against us means you didn't study the Minnesota White Out game. If you give Clifford the middle of the field, he'll burn you there because we're three deep at TE, and Tinsley is a great possession WR. Outside of our Manny Diaz's defense dominating, Singleton does what he's done multiple times this season so his stats may look crazy, but he's been a homerun back all year while Kaytron has the power runner. They're recognized as the best freshmen backfield in college football for a reason. I think once we had a chance to feel you out and absorb your first two scores, then the momentum was with PSU after the half and our adjustments combined with the talent deficit is why we were probably going to win the game 7 times out of 10 if everything else was equal.
I definitely think Utah is a great team. If you want to take the next step, it starts with stacking recruiting classes so you have the talent and depth to absorb injuries. It looks like you have a great class coming in so just keep doing it. I also think you can't fall victim to the PAC-12 style which doesn't value strong defensive play. Being the top defense in the PAC-12 may only make you above average in the B1G. And to my initial point, I'd definitely keep the humble underdog mentality considering you have lost multiple bowl games in a row. The best thing that happened to PSU was most people believed that we were going to lose. So the win, which looks obvious in hindsight, actually looks all the better.
Utah football needs to be humbled and get back to the basics. I hope this game did it. The players coaches and fans are starting to get to arrogant. I am tired of the talk that the last couple years teams are better than 04,08 Utah teams. Not even close. Those teams had a pissed of mentality. They went into every game with a chip on the shoulder. This team struggles to be a road favorite. That tells me Utah needs to be more humble. The only reason Utah teams were great is because of grit and tenacity. So when Utah goes into the game patting themselves on the shoulder before the game it’s a problem. This is also more proof why dual threat QBS don’t work.

There’s a-lot of good stuff in your comment. I’ll just say I don’t think it was disrespectful to say Utah would win. I said all week long Penn State could win this game I just thought Utah would by a felid goal. I was wrong but never disrespected Penn State.
The Utes got humiliatingly embarrassed to a national audience.
That loss wasn’t to blame because of a Cam Rising injury, insufficient players, or turnovers at all, that loss falls entirely on Kyle Whittingham and his coaching staff.
They got rattled easily by their opponent, got out-coached, out-played and they looked undisciplined.
The offensive play calling by Ludwig, and especially the defensive scheme plays by Scalley were both pathetically atrocious.
Penn State had their way with them without hardly any resistance whatsoever on both sides of the ball.
This loss clearly shows how Kyle is a coach who can’t consistently produce success at the next level especially against the other power 4 conferences.
Kyle ultimately is the one who has to take full accountability for his team, and he is not immune from any criticism, or scrutiny either for his failures.
There needs to be wholesale changes with Ludwig, and Scalley, both have a pattern of sustained, inconsistent coaching flaws that are no longer viable going forward for the Utes.
My comment might be an unpopular one, and I would face certain disagreement with many, but I have to be a realist, and anyone can’t deny the literal truth, and facts about this team’s coaching staff that are clearly evident of their overall tenure performances.
I disagree. Your coach is an excellent one and Rising just should have backed up a bit on running, but tough to do as a competitor. Utah is a very good team and was in no way embarrassed.
@@stephenlight647
I undeniably stand by my comment.
Yes, they literally did get flat-out embarrassed for being touted so high going into that game, and producing so poorly, getting rolled on both offense, and defense. That’s all on Whittingham.
Even with Rising still in the game, they still would have lost, Utes defense in particular was severely under coached, and their offense was restricted by bad play calling.
The loss wasn’t because of Cam’s injury, but the humiliation was. Barnes is terrible.
Barnes is NOT a D1 QB
There’s a lot to unpack here but I totally disagree. Whitt deserves some blame but to say Utah offers little resistance when they were tied at 14 at the half is just flat out wrong. Coach Whitt is a great Coach who guided this program to heights they haven’t ever seen. The scheme was not atrocious and players have already owned up to some of their mistakes. The coaches Seaver blame but to act like they are the only problem is just ridiculous.
This is getting ridiculous. Where are the Utes of old who used to win bowl games? The ones who won both the fiesta, and sugar bowls?
These guys haven’t won a bowl game since 2017. Lost FOUR bowl games in a row now, including back to back Rose Bowls. Sadly the Utes are turning into the Utah Jazz.choking the big games.
The days of top players playing in bowl games have passed. Now they set out and that definitely affects the outcome. Do you think Clark Phillips might have made a difference? What about Dalton Kincade? You score more and keep the defense off the field, and if Cam plays the whole game the outcome could have been different.
You have to remember if Cam Rising played the rest of the way, Penn State would have kept their ones out and showed that they had no problem moving the ball in the second half. Would have hung 40 easily
Sure they maybe get one score but obviously Utah gets a few more too. I feel like it would have ended in a one score win for Penn State.
I aim concerned about the Ute punter who did his best Soccer imitation.
That guy was a fraud and was an embarrassment to Utah.
How can you be a reporter and not even get your facts right. It was 21-14 when rising got hurt and he was 8/21 with an interception when that happened. It wasn’t the offense that fell apart, it was the defense and woulda been 45-14 if penn state didn’t put their backups in. Utah got completely dominated and you can’t blame injuries as penn state also had 5 players out including a top 10 draft pick. The excuses are wild.
Imma say what everyone’s thinking but no one else is willing to say.....................................................................we lost because our pants didn’t match. We should’ve just worn all-red. * mic drop *
Your QB shouldn't be your primary runner. Hence position of running back and wildcat formation. If your QB is your best runner and you over use him you dont have a complete team. QB sneaks are meant to use once in awhile or last resort. I hate when teams or fans say "we would have won if our quarterback didnt get hurt" when that QB is doing too much. And a lot of teams are guilty of it and every team overused their QB too much at one point or another sometimes you dont always have a complete team
Penn State was up 21-14 when Rising got hurt. Get your facts straight.
Ute nation, let’s accept the season, look forward to the next, and cheer on the Runnin’ Utes to March Madness!
You guys will not have a good season next year, Oregon and Washington will be better.
@@averagebloke4474 archived, I’ll hold you to that.
@@connorjones6281 LMAO just how you did when Utah beat penn state right?
Incredible season either way. Conference championship still matters even in the playoff era
@@averagebloke4474 if you finish as a top 15 team I’d say that’s pretty good. Utah may not reach the same heights as they did last season but they will be a good team.
btw a receive cannot throw the ball away. It is automatically intentional grounding. Also, at the end of the game, when Rising and Clifford meet, you can read Risings lips and he says "I'm coming back"
Good game by Utah and Cam Rising is a slippery QB! I hate to see any player go out injured. We’ve had the same problem with Clifford in the past. He used to run a lot and invariably ended up injured. I hope Utah can escape the PAC 12 and join the Big Ten.
Utah played more like a Big 10 team then a Pac 12 team imho. They are tough and physical team.
How can you say that was a good game? The game I watched showed glaring errors in the pass defense from the very beginning. Also the Utah defense would close in on the Penn quarterback only to let him slip away for a big gain running or throwing. The Penn pass rush was brutal from beginning to the end forcing Rising to run which ultimately lead to the end of the Utah hopes with the injury. I am a huge Utah fan but I won’t try to spin the good game analogy at all. The fact is Utah was not a top ten team leading into this game and it showed. Big ten, ain’t gonna happen.
@@mr.wilson8340 Lol @ u. You must be a miserable person.
@@dflatt1783 Not miserable bud, just honest.
@@mr.wilson8340 If that's how you choose to frame your misery good for you. I'm not the one that has to live with it. Thank goodness.
Football is a team sport. So if one payer goes out with an injury, it's next man up. A team can't rely on one person to win.
It’s not relying on one but QB is the most important position.
Turned out that though Penn State was actually playing a road game, and playing the 'champ' of the Pac12... this game was no different than when PSU played Indiana or Rutgers: we had a few opening possessions that were 'feeling out'... then started making adjustments and fine tuning to what the other team is doing. Then we beat you down defensively because we rotate 9 guys on the D-line, 6 guys in the LB spots, and they all bring it... so there's always pressure.
Rising is a good runner, but he's upright and takes too many hits. He had a good share of the Ute's rushing total because he was good running from the pressure. But he was only 8 for 22 when he left... and things don't usually get better for the opposing QB as the 2nd half progresses.
It looked like both your O & D lines got tired, and weren't executing.
It's also very hard to beat the PSU secondary consistently.... we might allow a couple of big throws, but more often come up with the big play.
One final thing, Clifford has had many great outings in his Nittany Lion career... this is not an outlier.
He's complementary to the offensive scheme... not the dominant type QB that PSU has incoming, Drew Allar.
He owns the school QB records because he's been a 4-year starter, which has never really happened @ PSU, but will still be revered in the future.
Also, over a year ago... when the NIL stuff was still in process of getting declared legal... Clifford studied the situation, and formed an NIL rep and adviser company... if he doesn't get to the NFL (doubtful), I don't doubt that he'll do very well for himself.
Dude you sure you were watching the same game. Singleton's run was in the 3rd quarter. The second PSU TD was a 10 yard slant to Mitch Tinsley which was a 6 play 70 yard drive. Maybe you rewatch the game before you put out your podcast.
I was at the game so yeah I think I saw it. I made a mistake in heat of the moment and I own that but you have no idea what transpired between the end of the game and me recording this pod so maybe keep the comments respectful that’s all I ask.
Watch the replay of when Cam got hurt, he went to cut and his leg seemed to give out right before he was hit by three Penn state defenders. Check it out.
Agreed, same thing I saw
I’m tired of QB’s having games of their lives against Utah. CJ stroud set a record in the 1st rose bowl, AR was pretty much flawless in this year’s Opener, DTR was on fire in the UCLA game, Caleb williams first game was one of his beat, and Shawn Clifford was highly effective in an uncharacteristic way during the rose bowl. I’m sure the fans were presently surprised at his accuracy and escapability. AR and DTR where also turnover prone the rest of the season, without showing much of that against us. Grant it part of that lies with Utah’s defense. Our pass rush and secondary were lacking at times, but no more than other teams they struggled against. I just felt we have been the unlucky recipients of their best games, and hopefully it averages out more in the future. A better, more experienced defense will help this out for sure, and next year we will definitely be a more experienced group.
It took a little while for PSU to get going on offense and getting to Rising on D but Utah was down 21-14 when Rising got hurt. Regardless, he was running for his life from the 2nd quarter on. Utah had no passing game even with Rising in save for a fluke 3rd and 10 bomb where PSU’s #4 corner slips and loses sight of the ball. Franklin could’ve made the score 42-14 late but he had class and played the 3rd team depth guys on both O and D to finish.
Still a question for Utah. Does Cam trust his receivers? No Kuithe or Kincaid who he heavily relied on.
I’m going to call out equipment management for Utah . They were slipping all game . Were wearing wrong cleats . Needed way more bite in those conditions
Utah I thought kept Penn State off balanced with the play calling in the first half and really made Abdul Carter mostly invisible which had not happened in many games. They even threw the TD against him when he was late on the coverage in the end zone. That 7:15 drive by Utah was impressive.
From State College and bleed blue and white but will say Utah is my second favorite team. Good assessment of the game. I really hope Cam’s injury isn’t to serious and he is able to return quickly. It was sad to see him go down. The only other thing I saw that you didn’t cover was overall team speed affected the utes defense especially the secondary. They just seemed a step off.
How tf is Utah your second favorite? Not picking at you lol just wondering. Did you go to school there or just like the program/state? I went to Penn State followed by Cincinnati for grad school. I liked when Cincinnati was playing well but they were no my second choice I’m not sure who I’d choose I guess whoever beats Ohio State is my #2 team for a season 😂
@@raywalteroutdoors spend a lot of time in Utah and have watched them for many years. They are a solid program and just like them.
I agree. I don't think we would have won even if Cam was in. Lot's not clicking. Too many of our A+ players were not there made it too difficult to overcome Clark, Tavion, Kuithe, Kincade them Cam, just became too much.
He hurt himself basically 🤷♂️. Think penn st had game no matter what we 21 points by end if don't count garbage points vs back ups! Utah was a tough team though but penn st might be destined for greatness next season.
Rising is not as durable as Duggan and he took a self induced beating after a while
Utah is a very good team. Why wasn't Cam sliding instead of running like a running back. Cam is a hell'va player and a winner. Good luck to Utah going forward.
Oh the irony. Trolled USC with “Back ✌️ Back” after a win in which Williams was hurt.
Only to lose “Back ✌️ Back” Rose Bowls and cling to the excuse that it was because of an injured Rising.
Humility, folks. Humility…
I said on this show that it wood have been a different Pac-12 championship if Caleb didn’t get hurt. I think Utah would have won but that game would have been much different
Penn State fan with major respect for Utah. Excellent run game and easily the best outside of Michigan in terms of our opponents. An absolute must for a home and home to be scheduled. A whiteout would be a great experience for the Utah fans. No way Penn State would win at Utah. Needs to happen as both schools are not afraid of challenging non conference games. Utah 3 for 3 for TDS in the red zone was something the Penn State defense has not had happen to them all year. Agree very close game with Cam in there. Suggest Utah figure out how to win with Cam on the move a lot less and that translates to top 5 status for the Utes. Only negative I have to say is the Penn State slight talent advantage was overlooked by Ute fans going into this game.
Penn state fan too, don't respect these guys they were talking shit all month.
100% would travel to SLC for a regular season game. If you've never been, it's an amazing and stunning landscape and place and the people are incredibly friendly and welcoming
Would love to travel to SLC for a 2d meet up with the Utes!
@@timmckeown1313 I'd rather have it be Oregon or Washington, the real better programs in the Pac 12.
WHAT????? DUDE COME ON OHIO xx was way better than Utah we had to play Damm near a perfect game vs. Ohio xx to beat them we out gained them in every category literally except turnovers you could see that with all the talent Penn st. Has Ohio xx had more talent but vs. Utah you could start to see in the second half we had a lot more talent out there , Utah has a great coach which allows Utah to make up for there lack of talent. &Last We saw how good Ohio xx can be they had #1 Georgia beat but Ryan Day has trouble Winning the big games besides guess who? Penn st. He's starting to be like Coach Franklin and I'm a big Coach Franklin fan a lot of Penn st. Fans been out of pocket saying he hasn't done anything the guy has won a B1G title and he's lead Penn St to 4 New Years Six bowls already 2 Rose 🌹 Bowl Game 's and the Fiesta and Cotton Bowls.
Utah secondary is not fast enough.Plus not able to handle Penn Staes rush. But UTah is still a good team.
Curry should be back and I am interested in seeing his impact. What ever happened to Glover??? JJ is a warrior who will lead the Ute running attack, would like to see Bernard come back and why not? A couple of 4 star RB's coming in should add depth. My concerns aren't RB's but who is the QB? Is Nate Johnson ready, is he the future? Does Cam come back? I think if he has plans to continue football he has to come back and prove he is healthy, NFL won't touch him right now let alone pass an NFL physical exam.
Utah beat a lot of good teams this year. Well, not a lot. But at least one. USC. Who lost to Tulane this week. Ok. Utah beat no one this year.
Congrats to the Utah fans for turning the Rose Bowl red. A truly enthusiastic and supportive fan base that obviously gets behind their team with their feet and their wallets. Penn State fan travel likely squashed some by a late game on a Monday on January 2nd. If the 1st had fallen anywhere from Wed-Sat it would have been a 60/40 Utah crowd. Playing in Ann Arbor and Columbus in front of 100,000+ must help at least a little bit in the unbalanced fan attendance at the Rose Bowl.
Utah was also allotted more tickets and with Utah be obviously much closer to Pasadena. Still a good showing both at the game and the LA showing party.
You mean congrats for getting blown out. Is that what you meant?
D-was at fault….penn only had big plays against our D…we allowed there WR to make big plays…..D couldn’t stop them….cam should of played Qb not RB-your job is to run the offense, not take off running and get smashed between 3 defenders ..
As a Penn Stater, I love Utah. You played well and your team is really physical.
With that being said, Cam Rising needs to learn to slide or fall down. I know he is a tough kid but a QB isn’t going to win against 2 or 3 huge defenders.
Like many programs , Utah has a ceiling.
I get what your saying but if Cam dosn’t get hurt their definitely in this game. They can definitely win a Rose Bowl.
Singletons run was the 3rd touchdown.
Utah what happened!!!!!!!!
Thanks for giving us a top 10 win lol. I wouldn’t call it a signature win when both teams were missing key players but still James got a rare top 10 win.
Come on dude it wasn't no 80-20 Utah with the crowd I'll give ya 65-35 at most, but it wasn't bc Utah fans travel better than Penn st . 10 hour drive from salt lake City, UT compared to a 38 Hour Drive from State College, PA that had a lot to do with it but Penn st. Was playing Utah that had a lot to do with it ,Utah doesn't have a name let alone being a blue blood. When Penn st. Played USC in the rose bowl Game 🌹 in 2016-17 season that game was almost a 50/50 split with the fans USC campus is only 15 minutes from the Rose 🌹 Bowl Game snd USC is a Blue Blood Program just like Penn st.
Where you at the game? I also never said Utah fans travel better. I expected there to be more Utah fans because of how close they are.
Blame it on Cam, knew that was coming, we beat your guys up and down, Sean Clifford out threw on you guys. Go back to watch the tape, put some more respect on Penn State next time bud.
Unlike PSU analysts who more often than not bash Clifford or Franklin and were saying not to bet on this game or even giving Utah the win, you and all your cronies acted all week like Utah walked on water.
Cam sucked in this game. Yeah he made some awesome runs to extend drives but a better QB than Clifford… hell no.
Tight coverage exposed him to be mediocre at best. Never been a huge Clifford fan but Clifford was efficient and dialed in.
Kudos to Franklin for actually getting reps and experience to quality backups because it proved important in this game. And WTF with Utah not prepping a QB back up. That’s squarely on Kyle and totally inexcusable.
Utah has a great o line and front 7 on D are really talented but IMO Utah lacked speed overall and definitely speed in the secondary.
You need to listen to a BWI broadcast about PSU then dial back the doom and gloom a few notches for a realistic assessment of your program. No harm in honesty.
Utah fans were awesome and unlike an Ohio State game I didn’t feel the necessity of showering immediately after the game to get the smell of meth and refried raccoon off of me
As a Utah fan , it’s Doom and gloom because we’ve been building to this point in our program for 8 years now !
And last year we failed, but we gave it everything we had , and just got Out played by a elite blue blood !
This year we didn’t show up , and “next Year” is never guaranteed..
And the Utes fans that are thinking we can get to the rose bowl next year , aren’t paying attention to what the Rest of the Pac12 is doing...
And even if we do get to the rose bowl for a 3rd straight year, we might be walking into a 3rd straight loss ..
