The thing you said about Oba in the Caribbean is interesting. Cause "Foreign man in a foreign Land," talked about that, too. He's actually from the Bahamas!
Also feel guilty. Cause. I have adhd and chronic pain. I know I don't make enough, or do enough around the house. I know my parents do way more. But. I also struggle to get my shit together so It isn't all falling to them. My mom told me house work isn't "women's work," ages ago. And yet. I know my mom is still working "the double shift," in part cause of me. Like. It makes me mad. It makes things hard.
some of them were talking with the bomber guy himself, behind the scenes. others are just farming the content for views, as it's a hyped topic right now.
@@sprouting_lady It's because Hbomberguy released a 4 hour VE on it and since his videos are cultural landmarks on breadtube now, everybody made their own videos about it

I had a professor who loved roger scruton when I was getting my bachelor's in philosophy. everyone hated this class. as part of our grade we had to do presentations, and half of us chose to present on scruton and why he sucked - on the day we had to present, he died. we fully believed our collective hatred of this man gathered in one building had killed him
I’d like to imagine you guys had a massive group chat delegating who used what sources so nobody could get axed for plagiarism, and in effect it was just one massive teardown on why he sucked
The way the camera moves during the Arsonist's monologue, so even as he "flatters" the woman he's talking to by calling her beautiful, intelligent, creative, etc; he's looking DOWN on her. Fucking brilliant.
@@jaduspeaks4754 I don't know if it might be a partly neurodivergent thing for me, but the moving camera also perfectly captured this dizzying effect that I feel in confronting conversations where I feel overly fixated on irl, like this feeling that the room is falling away, or that the subject is still yet moving unpredictably to me. Just such an amazing Arsonist face reveal. I love too the little hits on the newspaper, how the Arsonist says "we can't even call them women's shelters!" meanwhile, the newspaper confirms the character is a liar.
@@lilpetz500I think you hit on something there, too! I've experienced a similar sensation when I've been in intense confrontations/arguments. Funny thing, you don't process the Arsonist as arguing with you or confronting you...not until the end anyway.
The arsonist could be the slimiest most hated caricature character ever but they way you act it out is legit terrifying because it makes him into a charming person who utilises skillful manipulation tactics to the extreme.
It feels so weird to hear Abigail use his voice now, like my brain is okay with her old, pre-transition videos but something about her speaking in a male voice while still giving off girl boss vibes just… gives me the weirdest secondhand dysphoria. Maybe I’m overthinking things.
@@Bildgesmythe Honestly? I wish actual psychopaths in the real world were like the arsonist. He’s hot, composed, clever. In comparison, real life villains have the combined charisma and intelligence of a leaf blower.
50:10 when the Arsonist says “They’re not even calling it a women’s shelter!” while holding up the paper with the headline “WOMEN’S SHELTER BURNS” is quite funny and extremely relevant to the rest of the essay
@@falconeshield starting to think this Arsonist guy isn't quite on the level But I hesitate to jump to any conclusions, of course. We must always assume good faith! Perhaps someone could debate him in the free marketplace of ideas?

Honestly, just hearing The Arsonist speak after all this time caught me off-guard. Seems like every time this fellow shows up, he says something rather objectionable!
Abigail plays the Arsonist very well she is an extremely skilled actress. I love how charismatic the Arsonist is, how the character talks, flirts, pretends to care about your thoughts and then how the conversation is steered in such subtle ways. Masterful manipulation, a terrifying character. Brilliant work Abigail!
I've kinda missed the arsonist. I had made peace with the fact that Abi had retired him following her transition, but seeing his return both makes me happy and absolutely terrified; he chills my blood more than any other fictional villain... Partly because I feel like I wouldn't be able to notice the strings he's pulling if I ever met him myself... It's an amazingly well-written villain she's created, and I'm apprehensively here for it...
Thinking about the "queerness is seen as foreign" line as a 2-spirit Indigenous American that's been told countless times that my identity is a new fad. Even though there's a word for it in my tribe's language that, y'know, predates colonialism :^)
I'm trans masc, and my boyfriend (who is native) was the first person I've ever met who just understood immediately and even introduced me to the term two-spirit, which was amazing to me because I had spent most of my highschool experience trying to do research on historical proof of trans people, which even when I showed that to people they still wouldn't believe me
Hey! I'm an ally of the LGBT+ and wanted to thank you for introducing the word 2-spirit (even with it being far from a perfect descriptor for people under the umbrella). Maybe this was an odd thing for me to do, but I am being genuine! Take care :)
It seems some youtubers (well, at least one, but probably more) were aware of the video drop and prepared stuff by themselves to add on it. I wonder if this is the case.

Okay but the amount of fear being felt by anyone who plagiarised her work after seeing what Hbomberguy did to Somerton just brings me a certain amount of joy as an academic who busts my ass doing my own research (this whole thing has felt extra personal since Somerton was a jerk to me directly on Twitter and also makes videos on similar topics to what I cover in academia). As always though, I can't wait to see Abigail's video! Her work is consistently some of, if not the, best content on this site!
i find it astounding that those who plagiarize weren't already terrified of an outcome like James's. like when you so lazily copy past info that you found from a public source that anyone could easily point out not only says alot of those people's egos but how little they think of the audience they're presenting the information too. you're not going to fact check me you're too lazy yourselves. it is and can be daunting to spent some hours searching and finding multiple sources or accounts on a particular topic but now after all this i think everyone's a bit more enclined to do their due diligence.
@@Onyx-_-liquor They're not terrified because they know there are almost zero consequences. Illumi's plagiarism came out ages ago, as well as her (in my opinion) more egregious and frequent factual errors (see examples in Hbomberguy's video). And she's still been pumping out content, she still makes money, and is actively trying to ruin the lives of multiple people currently. That Filip guy from IGN lost his job and... that's it. What's James going to do? Wait a couple of months/ a year, sleeping on a pile of Patreon money, and try to make a comeback.
I follow several youtubers who sometimes read/watch others content. Sometimes most or all of one video/essay. Probably without permission. BUT they are open about that is what they are doing AND they provide their own opinions and thoughts, throughout. Basically reviewing the original creators work in an often rambly unscripted way. Original creator is named several times, throughout the video, and links are provided. "Here's what it says that means on wikipedia" happens a lot when big words are used. If the reviewer is mostly just humming and yeahing and not having much to say on their own I don't follow them and may ask TH-cam not to suggest their channel again. Because they are boring and crappy reviewers. It's a bit of a lazy freeride on other peoples hard work but they don't play it off as anything other then an amateur review/reaction video. What the people HBomber exposed did was worse. Not only using other peoples work but HIDING that was what they were doing. Even their opinions were word for word OTHER PEOPLES opinions.
Imagine saying "a shared identity is what holds us together!" And then recommending a shared identity that leaves most people feeling isolated, ignored, and mistreated
I find this absolutely fascinating, because in my college classes, we discussed how the 'American identity' tends to be especially artificial and therefore especially emphasized within America because of all the varied places Americans come from requiring that we can only truly find unity in the shared idea of being American, and loving America and other Americans. Where 'shared identity' is a clear dogwhistle in one country (talking about people who were there for multiple generations rather than folks who were there only for one or two), it's a call to unity in another country. I'll be interested to contemplate it further.
So despite being non-binary I genuinely heard the joke about the nonexistent uterus and my first thought was “oh she got it removed” because this is my first time watching the channel lmao
Spectacular moment in the Arsonist's monologue at 46:00 where he gestures invitingly towards the listener and says "I'm interested to hear your thoughts" before the hand immediately turns around into a silencing gesture, and he begins aggressively explaining *to* her what her thoughts *ought* to be, and driving the camera lower and lower as he steamrolls her and heaps on narratives meant to engender envy of other marginalized groups. I can't. It's so good.
Best Arsonist scene to date for sure. A lot of people are talking about how charming and manipulative a character he is, and I do like that as well, but what I enjoyed the most in this scene is that, no matter how much he tries to hide or sugarcoat it, the fascism still shines through, both in the talking points and the mannerisms. Fascists can try to portray themselves as reasonable people who “just have a few concerns”, but if you know what to look for, they always give themselves away.
It's a tactic so many people like this do in conversation. Ask to hear what you think and then IMMEDIATELY, without pausing for breath launch into what *they* think. Not giving you a moment to get a word in edgewise about your thoughts, after inviting you to share them. It's a way to make themselves look like they're listening to you, while not giving you any opportunity to voice your opinions. By the time they're done talking, they would have made their position so abundantly clear that you'll either agree with them to avoid conflict or even if you want to challenge them on it they would have said so many outrageous things that you don't even know where to start.
I really enjoy rewatching the monologues of the arsonist to see all the little details I may have not picked up on at first. There are so many dogwhistles throughout, it’s wild how well they can blend in with other talking points

I got disowned when I was 19 and couldn't get government assistance despite briefly being homeless and living below the poverty line. This is because, untill you're 22, you're considered a dependent to your parents. The only way to claim benifits is either prove that your parents are a significant immediate threat to your safety (not just violent or abusive), or have them fill out income report paper work. When tried to file for independence based on abuse, I was told I was only in teir 2 and I needed to be in teir 4 risk. My parent used words to kick me out. They weren't 'violent'. But at the same time, I couldn't get them to fill out the income paperwork nessecary because they didn't want anything to do with me. This also impacted my access to affordable health care. I've since turned 22 and gotten benifits and it is life changing. Prior I could not attend University in full time as I had to work 25hrs a week minimum. Now I can! My benifits take care of my rent!!! Ya girls getting an education!!!
I'm a woman in the tech industry. Because I'm a women, I was the only one who was ever asked to make the powerpoint presentations "pretty" which, along with the actual design, meant doing all the data analysis and charts and stats. They would go off to the board and look good and I got no credit. I finally embedded "created by (name)" into the theme in the background. My bosses aren't technical so they couldn't get rid of it. And they didn't dare ask me to delete it or risk admitting they were passing the work off as their own. 😂

I do that too!!! I've had so many awful experiences with group projects or working in teams where I've done 90% of the work or the entire thing and had other team members (usually male!) claim that they conceived of the idea/writing/etc. that I've ended up putting credits in literally everything.

I'm really glad you brought back The Arsonist for this video. It was chilling, unsettling, and unexpected. It captured that feeling when a man in power speaks down to you and you can't say anything about it. That feeling of real danger even though on the surface it seems he's just saying a few kind words. I hope people who haven't experienced that feeling IRL can maybe understand it a bit more from this video.

@@quinn.iamdefinitelycisgend2542 For anyone who doesn't know, it's inspired by Artur Berger and/or Max Frisch's plays. It's a very insightful commentary from the early-to-mid 20th century.
@@quinn.iamdefinitelycisgend2542 she portrayed the character in such a chilling way, like exactly the last guy I want to meet; polite yet threatening, and misogynist in just covert enough of ways that I can see people defending the points and calling me unfair and against male feminists for critiquing them. She writes the character with the graceful nuance of someone who has both been very familiarised with toxic masculinity teachings (see, the Ur Dad concept in past videos), along with how it feels like to be one of the women horrified and harmed by it. I say, she should be in the running as the President of Women, idk she seems to be a strong candidate.
It's worth noting a similar connection to the experience mentioned at 27:43. In her autobiography (paraphrasing from memory), Angela Davis went to a clothing store that typically did not serve black people in her adolescence. However, she and the girl she was with chose to speak French instead of English when they entered, and instead of being kicked out they were treated with decency and even intrigue. The store clerk perceived them as foreign, and in that perception their blackness posed less of an inherent threat. Thought that'd be interesting to mention, especially considering the insersection of race and gender mentioned earlier in the video. Apologies if I got any details wrong!
Reminds me of this idea we have in Japan called the "gaijin (foreigner) card". It refers to how when people recognize that someone is a foreigner, they won't enforce domestic rules and expectations. Despite being Japanese, I've used it more than once to get out of bs situations. For me it was never as serious as racial segregation, but I just wanted to point out a parallel. It's very sad and telling how sometimes the only way to duck systemic injustice is to pretend you're not part of their system. To "otherize" yourself from your own community.
The portrayal of the arsonist.... WOW Kudos to Abi for feeling able to bring him back - it was utterly compelling. I think it's possible the heightened state around doing this character again may have pushed her to even greater heights (depths?) because I think it's one of the best acting performances I've seen her give. (the unnerving camera work was great as well) The selling of fascism to women was a fascinating subject to delve into, as it echos how we are seeing so many people buying in to narratives and groups that are actively hurting them right now. Also, the parallel of suffragettes adopting fascism with TERFs adopting hard right rhetoric was BRILLIANT. The subtitles did not lie, this one was indeed a banger.
The absolute genius of the Arsonist saying "we need women who can stay cool when the heat is on" when _he's the one who's setting things on fire in the first place._ Perfectly encapsulates how oppressors gaslight the oppressed into doing their dirty work for them.
I’ve gotta say @18:31, as a person with a disability, who has a girlfriend who is “completely disabled,” our lives are infinitely more difficult than they need to be. We are both used frequently and paid less, or nothing, for the work we do. We also have significant difficulty with financial matters overall as we need financial help, but that financial help also keeps us from being able to be married. All I want, literally all I want, is a safety net to catch me if and when my disability becomes an issue. I want to work! In fact I desperately need to work, but sometimes my multiple disabilities threaten my ability to work consistently, and I don’t think I should be threatened with total collapse because of something I can’t control. Great video, thank you so much, you’re one of the greatest TH-camrs ever. You’re one of the coolest women alive, we appreciate you so much.

I mean considering the sheer size of Hbomberguys' topic? I have a feeling each essayist could pick their own niche and not have to worry about overlap.
Todd in the Shadows said he was working on his companion video fact checking Somerton way back in August. So Harris probably talked with creator friends well before that
It's a great touch to have the Petrol Salesman literally talk down to us as the camera moves lower and lower. Great to have him back! I hope it wasn't too hard for Abi to return to that character.
I had the same thoughts. I will say, it's fascinating and strangely heartening to see how much drag king energy this edition of the salesman has. There can - depending on the person - be something very bittersweet but satisfying about discovering that you can't present as your AGAB without looking like you're crossdressing. That was certainly my experience.
I think this is his most chilling appearance yet. Part of it was just my surprise at seeing Abby play him again, but I don't think it's _just_ that. You can _feel_ what the...two, three years? of experience has done for her skills.
I've seen a lot of straight women talking about their relationships and how they deserve to be cared for by their male partners on tiktok and I've started seeing this play out in real life. I was at a work party and I could see that my coworker's wife had started challenging him and openly called him out for not doing the bare minimum (talking to her) in a public space where decorum is important. I'm so proud of her.
To me those tiktoks have always screamed of divine femininity (‘I am okay with doing all the housekeeping, I just want to feel like a female icon for it’), but this makes me reconsider that notion, thank you
@@mikkelens there are definitely those types of videos, the ones I've been seeing are really at the barest level of "does your partner care about you?" One video that I'm thinking of is posing to the viewer the question of if they asked their partner to bring them an orange as a snack, would they peal it? While I think that there's some neurodivergent complexity here that we're going to excuse, the idea is that the average partner, that when their partner would ask that of them, would think that "oh hey, my partner wants this is a snack, that means it would be easier for them/more preferential for the orange to be peeled, I'll do that." In the same vein, I've seen a lot of cis couples "modelling" healthy relationships. There was a guy that posted a "story" about going to the store for his wife to get pumpkin pie ingredients, realized she forgot the pumpkin in the list of items, and decided not to get it because it wasn't on the list even though he didn't think there was any at home. I've seen a lot of women posing a similar situation to their husbands/boyfriends and asking them to walk through the thought process of the decision they'd make. The theme is generally "if you forgot [key ingredient] on the list and I didn't know if we had any at home, I'd just buy it because what's the worst that's gonna happen if we have an extra of [key ingredient]??" And showing that it's just basic care and thought for your partner and that it's possible to have that in a relationship. That women are giving this to their male partners and it's totally okay to expect the same from them.
@@lazo9972 i’m not on tiktok so i haven’t seen the tone of those videos, but that baffles me a little bit, i’ll admit. it seems like a lot of mind game expectations on both parties rather than just… communicating? in those scenarios, my first instinct would be to poke my head into my loved one’s room and go “hey, want me to peel that orange?” or give them a call or text and go “hey, no pumpkin on the list, do we have some at home already?” like, yeah, i agree that partners no matter the gender should be thoughtful and take care of each other. but having unspoken expectations of your partner, even in small things like the orange problem, is a recipe for resentment in my experience.
Calling your partner out in public isn't exactly respectful. There are simply better ways of getting your point across without belittling your partner.

I'm really happy to see you dip your toes back into the character post transition, and how you've reconciled that you, in fact, still dip down into your low voice and be incredibly effective with it. In a way, it's almost healing to see you play the character again, as many who transition don't ever want to be seen as their 'former' selves, in acting roles or not. So again, thank you for being vulnerable in a way only you can in this world. Never stop.
That entire "fire" recruiter scene was just ART. The camera slowly descending below him to make him look larger and more dominant as he spoke about making you the viewer dominant. The camera shaking more and more to reflect that cognitive dissonance and cue you into realizing it's all a sales pitchy grift into f@scism. That spine chilling line "Do you have a match?" having the classic philosophytube fire metaphor but also serving as an invitation to the viewer to become "the match" and start the next fire. AUGH. Your film is going to be so good if this is the stuff you put out for free.
As a trans woman -- who has hours on hours of content on TH-cam both before and after transitioning -- the sudden appearance of the Arsonist was shocking to me. What a bold creative choice that leaves me awed.
I do love that her as the Arsonist kinda looks goofy now- like, she can still do the voice, but when I'm watching the video I think it's funny because it's like. Abby in male drag. Stick a stache on that woman and that's a man baybee! (In the 'playing the acting part of a man' kinda way)
I previously worked at a trillion dollar company and there were so many women who had this experience. Picture a meeting full of men and few women, a women presents an idea, it’s ignored, then 10 minutes later a man spouts the same suggestion and suddenly it’s groundbreaking and must be acted on. I was ashamed for my then employer. I had the opportunity to talk to so many women from different parts of that business and this was an experience that was universally shared by them.
I'm working for a passion project for free and this still rings quite true, it's just men taking credit of all my ideas all the way and passing it off as theirs.
I felt absolutely transfixed during the entire Arsonist monologue. The camera movement and positioning, the use of dogwhistles, the flattery, the sense of menace... just absolutely perfect.
"Ignorance is a bit like CO2, it gets pumped out because powerful people benifit from it." I love this line and am absolutely going to steal it. Which given the premise of the video I find extremely ironic.

@@yorgivon-schmourgeussborgi I meant to be safe from getting sued because unless you can definitively prove it's your work, that your draft came first, with email trail and with a lot of money to do drag it through court, you can't easily fight that kind of a fight - but then if you had that kind of proof and energy you could cut to the chase and start with that
"Ignorance is a bit like CO2, it's pumped out because powerful people benefit from it." as someone with a degree in an environment and natural resources area, that hits me so hard. I think I need to take a look at the book sourced at that line, too.
It's also wild that they gladly ally with other conservatives who accuse liberals of being a bunch of reality-denying utopian hippies. Or more precisely, that those people ally with people who say that history should be rewritten to support their narrative. Are they willfully ignorant, or just straight hypocrites? Is there a difference?
The key is the power differential. Ordinarily, denying reality carries consequences; potentially dire ones depending on exactly what parts you deny. But if one person is in a position of power over another, they can make the other person shoulder all those consequences instead of them.
@@devinfaux6987 It honestly puts it in to perspective when you think of it that way. Rejection of reality as a show of power is so insidious. Its hilarious coming from the “moral objectivists” on the same level as “well you have to understand the time period of the people in the bible…” oh so does that make morality relative to time then? Ben Shapiro got caught with this recently and broke like toilet paper in a hurricane.
I think of it more like a: reality itself is always defined by people in power. Yes those scientist had also fight for power when the church said: no don't do research on THAT. Also maybe the idea that the church was always against science is maybe too a historical reality defined by people in power.
As a trans woman who is also a drag king, the return of the Arsonist was absolutely spectacular and just used so perfectly. Also it’s absolutely one of the hardest things in the acting profession to make a morally reprehensible person ooze that much charisma - it’s like if Iago nearly got you on side.

As someone currently being victimized by my husband of 32 years - who has left me to choose between food and medicine - what is the equivalent of blowing up a pipeline? Stop having their children. Stop doing their laundry. Stop running errands for them. Stop living with them, all that, yes - but blowing up the pipeline means stop having their children. (Hard fact: having children means you will need to be both a mother and a professional in order to remain financially safe, and it's exhausting and draining and probably going to shorten your lifespan - if it even works. Stop having their babies and within a generation they'll have no choice but to reckon with what they've built. Now do you see why reproductive freedom is so frightening to them?)
This. Notice just how vile and irrationally hateful incels get when a woman calmly says she does not want to have children. It's like their insecurity is oozing off their fingertips as they project every single fear onto you.

@FeedsNoSliesMusicyes, but in the past it used to only be men that played female characters bc women weren’t allowed to be in theatre. even when women were allowed they could only play female roles. it’s changing now though and these days you see a lot of women playing male characters which is cool :)
When I was in my twenties, I was living in a small town in my mom's house with my husband (who had recently been laid off) and my sister with her kids. I was the only one with a job, my father had died the year before and my sister had been abandoned by her common law husband. One day I needed to stop at the grocery store to get food for the house. I had been followed from my place of work to the store, and when I left, a woman came up to me, Angry I had the "Good office job" and stolen it from a man who had a family to feed. She knew where I worked and was angry enough to follow me around. I naturally took my food and left, taking a weird way home and increased my drive time quite a lot. That woman felt that it was more important that some theoretical man and his imaginary family have my job instead of my actual family having food, and I should be ashamed of myself. I knew right then and there, I was a feminist. My very real needs would Never be secondary to some construct of what someone else thought should be happening. That construct will see me actually starving, homeless and dead under a bridge because an imaginary man and his made up family was more important than real live people.
You tell that you work to feed YOUR family and she can go mess with somebody who gives a shit. It's your job, your money, your family. Don't let other assholes win. You stay winning
Heyak: "society is a spontaneous order that grows organically" Scruton: "yea exactly and it's bad to impose a top-down order on a spontaneous order" Queer People: [are queer as a result of a natural and spontaneous sense of identity] Scruton: "not like that"
Ok, in defense of his obviously incorrect ideas. It's more like suggesting that law and order exists to enforce certain ideals of justice and fairness. Those who decide those ideals are meaningless choose to kill and steal and nobody cares how they developed their moral identity, they must be stopped. His idea is that the majority is all that matters and minorities are to be subjugated at all costs. Obviously stupid and incorrect. But not contradictory
I'm surprised she didn't make the point that *the vast majority of society* is imposed top-down. But I suppose she didn't need to drive home the point that conservatives ignore reality any harder.
Same I like the selection of philosophers Abigail chose but Walter Benjamin ( journalist), who passed onto a different place after fleeing to paris would also suit your media analysis/reflection on the status quo stateside
Because people want to reduce the number of people they have to consider in their peer group so they have a larger amount of pie. Artificial scarcity feeds into this.
I don't watch this channel that much but I love how she became the arsonist and not his sister. It really puts into perspective who's in charge actually. Also I thought I would never see him again. His sister is cool though :D Thank you for bringing back your iconic character Abby! I hope it was not painful for you.
The way the camera gets lower and closer during the petrol salesman section is just genius! The character stays seated and doesn't move, but they go from eye-level to looming over the viewer in this really creepy way. These character sections are always the highlights of your videos.
Feels good to have my first ever patreon credit scroll with this song and the name that I feel most comfortable with instead of my current legal name. Much love to you and the rest of the team Abigail, fantastic job as always
My time as a young woman studying a heavily male-nerd-dominated field in university was heavily impacted by the awful internet nightmare remembered as gamergate and hearing Anita Sarkeesian narrating the bit about witch hunts just now really hit me. It was the right person reading that. Holy shit.
Sarkeesian was a cry bullying scold with rubbish work that perfunctory research often discredited. She was an outsider pretending to be a member of a tribe, criticizing that tribe. And she walked away with multiple media interviews, a sultans ransom. For a project she never finished. She was an IDPOL grifter, no lord no less
oh god… how was your experience, exactly? i simply can’t imagine what that must’ve been like, it’s awful. i’m suffering on my STEM course too, because of the teachers rewarding redditor-like behaviour.
Thank you for explaining the appeal of feelings over rights to women. You've explained many of the women I grew up around. Also, I appreciate your describing an American accent as "gorgeous." I've never heard that before.
Can I just say how absolutely haunting it is to hear The Arsonist’s voice again? In general it feels absolutely jarring to hear you put on a masculine voice in one your post-transition era videos. It just feels like “…That’s not Abby….Oh, God, that’s NOT Abby…!” Goes to show your acting chops know no bounds, and all and all this is turning out to be one of my favorite episodes you’ve put out lately. Almost feels like a sequel to your old “Gender, Marxism, and Witchcraft” video too. ❤ Edit: literally typing this as I watch but I also loved the fact that during the entire monologue The Arsonist gives, the camera is angled up so that he’s always looking down at the viewer, the “woman” in question that he’s trying to rally. It shows the truth that whatever pretty words he’s using to persuade the woman, he still sees her as beneath him, a pawn in his quest for power.
Abby's transition was so seamless that as an audience member I'm like. Yes, Abby before...Abby now. It's just all Abby. Same soul. Same person. Don't know why some ppl get all hung up on gender.
YES THE ARSONIST IS BACK!!!! I'm so glad you're in a place where you're comfortable enough to do that character, he is such a terrifyingly well written villain with so many opportunities to use for great storytelling. I had hoped in past vids you might hire a male actor to play him, so that you wouldn't have to subject yourself to that dysphoria, but honestly no one could do that character as well as you. Maybe Ewan McGregor, but he's probably busy.
Some characters are just so iconic that only the person who made them come alive in the first place can ever play them. I think that can be said about The Arsonist! Of course, none of us who love Abi want her to be uncomfortable so I'm so glad she was able to do bring him back even if it's just this once.
When I was a closeted trans teen guy, several works I wrote were plagiarized. One of the offenders even had the fucking brass to submit my work to a group I founded as his own. Another was making money on a song using a poem I wrote. It was disgusting. I eventually left my passion, just so I wouldn’t be treated like that again. I lost my voice. I’m only returning to it now, nearly 9 years later.
To be fair there's a difference between losing your passion because "you're good just not good enough" Vs "you're really good to the point where people steal your work" You get that right? Basically, I'm saying someone stealing your work is quantifiable proof that your work is exciting and original enough for whatever persons stole your work. You're one of the good ones! (Just maybe work on copyright). I sadly, fall under the former of "good but not good enough". I've had film scripts come down to the final 2 for funding from Film London (but obviously didn't get funded). My 2 Producer's would eventually go on to Produce Peaky Blinders and the other became a commissioner at Apple TV. We were pretty damn good! I work in high level TV and Film now but not as a writer.... I miss writing....

@@owenarnold7611 the problem was being perceived as a girl in a place where nearly everyone else was a guy and much older than me. I was between the ages of 13 and 17 when this was happening. They stole my work, and twisted many parts of it. My works weren’t for profit, but they were deeply personal. So when people took them and twisted them, it hurt a lot. I’m not going to get into the specifics here, but the anger I felt about this, combined with the abuse I was experiencing at home, turned in on itself and it suddenly felt selfish to even think about myself, let alone write for myself. They stole my voice. Plain and simple. I’m not offended by you, but you are wrong. Things don’t need to be making money to hurt when someone takes them for their own means.

@@jeffbezef It's the name of the chapter of the arsonist. They should appear by name if you lightly tap on the vid, or you can find them in the description of the video.
I just want to say that bringing the arsonist back really was a masterstroke. My God is that character so perfect for this and Abigail killed it playing him.
The whole part about the suffragettes joined up with the fascist really helped me understand why some people sign up with groups that absolutely do not have their best interests in mind.
"but because I'm a woman I'm not allowed to feel angry, so I just say I'm feeling sad" damn if this isn't the realest depiction of the female experience I stg
People can cite the underlying ideas of toxic masculinity, but I wonder what constitutes toxic femininity. The need to be seen as attractive comes to mind-things like body image, but also the tight policing of sexual desire. You must look attractive, but you must not look like you're trying to be attractive. This balancing act of almost contradicting ideals seems to be a common theme.
@quinsutton7097 Oh exactly. Another big one I’d say is we must be empathetic and in tune to emotions but we ourselves are not allowed to be too emotional- we must be weepy but we must never wail or whine- we can only cry so long as we look pretty doing it. We must always know exactly what the men in our lives are thinking or feeling and act accordingly, but our own emotions must be hidden and dealt with privately so that we don’t bother the men around us with our female hysteria. We are never allowed to complain or bring attention to a problem, and we must always fix the problems of everyone else. We’re expected to be motherly and nurturing but we can’t be too coddling to our sons for fear of making them too soft- and we must scold and shame our daughters until they are exactly like us. The experience of womanhood is just one giant impossible balancing act where we must BE but must never be too much.
Also, now having reached the middle age, let me assure the average reader that the quote in the op is nonsense. Women are allowed to, and do in fact, feel angry, all of the damn time. it is they who choose to display that anger in the most passive aggressive manner possible. but let’s make no mistake, whether you are a male acting outwardly on your anger, or whether you are a female and dragging that anger out over extended periods of time, drip feeding your rage passive aggressively - there's no difference. Both examples are not in control of themselves. but I am just utterly sick of this nonsense - I have watched countless, untold numbers of females release their rage PUBLICLY, begging anyone within 50 ft.² to swing on them. it’s 2023 - i’ve been hearing that refrain for over 30 years now and I guarantee you it is no longer as applicable as it may have been three decades ago.
I almost screamed when *that character who hasn't appeared in a long time* appeared on screen. It must have taken a lot of courage to do that, you have my utmost respect👏❤
Same! He is my favorite character I really loved seeing him, thought it would never happen again. It makes me so happy that she feels comfortable to throw in a gender bender. Would also like to add that the camara work in the bit was also really good having him littarely talk down on you.
Amazing work as usual! I love the way you frame everything as a journey of gaining knowledge and reading books with phrases like, "but then and read", "I was relieved when I remembered", "and I read those too!", etc. As someone who always wants to share what I've learned to people lose to me, I can wholly and fully appreciate the perspective/framing of the material!

Reason is not automatic. Those who deny it cannot be conquered by it; but they do open themselves up to a downward slide into deeper ignorance and further manipulation by the corrupt who use them as fodder.
It's itself an ignorant statement: nearly everyone benefits from CO² pollution. Indeed it's majorly driven by consumers. If consumers didn't want to pollute, they'd force the companies to reduce their pollution. Convenience and price is more important, which is why companies keep polluting.

Speaking of women bandying together to warn others about predators, I had a teacher in Catholic school who was just know as "The Pedophile". This tells you how well known he was for, well, being just that. He had been teaching for decades on end, 5th and 6th graders; the only "safeguard" the school put into place was to have another teacher, his actual wife, teach alongside him. This being an elevator school, it covered grades 5-12. A lot of times this caused terrible problems (including boys about to enter college preying on girls shortly out of elementary class, and at one point, a scheme to extort money and sell switchblades to the youngest boys: the school, incidentally, did not solve any of these problems- it never did) but in this one case, it was actually helpful. 9th grade girls would find 5th graders in The Pedophile's classes and warn them. I received one such warning. They told me, and others, to never be alone with him. If need be, run. Ignore him if he hails you on hallway. And once you are done with him as a teacher, ignore him altogether. I still remember one of the 9th graders. She was livid, telling her peers that the man should be held accountable, that all this advice could only go so far. The other girls sympathized but as one said, "You know we've tried all that before. This is all we can do." Things did not change: once I got to 9th grade, I, too, warned 5th graders about this monster. And in case anyone was wondering, this was not the only teacher with this kind of proclivity. I had another one who stalked a friend of mine (10th grade), one who told a classmate to remove her shirt- even when told she had nothing under it- (7th grade, I think? Maybe 8th), and a priest who asked me on a date during confession (11th grade).
As a trans minister who had a white gay man take credit for the entirety of my ministry at general synod, this whole week of plagiarism content has given me life. Too many insecure men build their careers and reputations on the backs of marginalized people with more talent than them.

I never thought I’d see the Arsonist again after you introduced his sister, so seeing him again was an incredible delight, and it’s good to see he’s as insidious as he ever was.
27:05 I've heard something similar tends to happen in Japan; a white-passing gay American man I follow, who lived in Japan for eight years, has shared multiple times that he could more safely and comfortably be "out" than the Japanese men he dated while living there. According to him, attitudes were that "that's okay where you're from" and that his Japanese partners were "held to a 'higher standard'".
A few minutes in and I'm glad that you point out why us nurses are so brutally screwed, abused and disrespected as a profession. "Healthcare heroes" my @$$.

Maybe it's different than other states but you guys get a union in California meanwhile the phlebotomist and people like myself who do cardiology now we're prevented from doing unions basically they crab us down "We got ours. Fuck you" When it should be "We got ours, let's HELP you"
As a long time fan, seeing the arsonist again legitimately made me cry, I'm so thrilled that Abi feels comfortable in the male drag of her old character. Im so happy about all your success Abi, keep going!

Abigail, I was listening to your latest video while working on my latest art piece (as I often do), and when you changed to your """""gentlemen"""""" persona I didn't even know it was you for a good three minutes until I looked over and nearly did a double take. Holy crap my girl he was so vile you did an amazing job at displaying that character but I was very glad to have YOU back for the conclusion. I just wanted to commend you for your acting and how far you've come. Also, fuck the guy who ripped your work off, Karma will come for him :\
I have always found it impactful, but for me that was your most chilling rendition of 'Do you have a match?' so far. *Mad* respect for being able to play that role again, and I think it adds a lot to the video to have that demonstration of how the attempt at seduction can go.
Yes! The captions at the end say it was really hard for Abby to reprise that role but it felt right/important to do so for this video and mad props to her because it was fucking amazing.
I saw the first part of this comment before it got there, and thought that the Arsonist's sister was gonna say "do you have a match," AND I DID NOT FUCKING EXPECT ABIGAIL TO PLAY THE ARSONIST AGAIN HOLY SHIT
As amazingly chilling the monologue was, what was unspoken and unsaid in it is SO powerful as well. You know the arsonist has a match. You know he's asking just to flatter the strong, well-prepared, INTELLIGENT 'female' he's pitching to. I'm glad Abby was able to portray this character again because she can say incredible things through the arsonist.
Completely agreed. The script and vocal acting were on point, but what really sent the chills down my spine was the body language and facial expressions. Absolutely incredible work.
I usually listen to videos with headphones on without actually watching (a massive mistake for channels with imagery as lovely as philosophy tube), but when I first heard the arsonist speak I immediately stopped what I was doing to actually watch. For a moment I almost thought it was clipped from an old video… and then the newspaper dropped. I can’t imagine how challenging that must have been for her but there really was something so incredibly powerful about that scene (with her decision to reprise the role contributing significantly to that power in and of itself).
I'm not done with the video yet, but I just want to say that the Arsonist looks so much more like a Hannibal Lecter-ish intelligent maniac type of character now. The makeup, styling and the empty unblinking gaze do so much work here that the Arsonist looks almost like a mannequin, very placticky and unnatural. Amazing job there, and Abigail has an AMAZING horror potential - on the "beautiful English women" part I felt the need to cover myself and look away immediately.
Despite the accent, I got American Psycho vibes from the speaking cadence alone. And that laugh! *shudder* Never saw this character before so it was downright terrifying.
@@rosesleeps If you like the arsonist here, I definitely recommend Abigail’s earlier videos where the character showed up! Like, seriously that is a character who has come close to giving me nightmares, not gonna lie!

@@oofcloof Err, no, they're saying a fascist movement from this century is equivalent to the same one from another. Just having a 'traditional family structure' is actually not something anyone needs a 'movement' for if they can and do choose that. (Of course a lot of the women that get on a *bandwagon* about it seem to be pretty shocked when the leopards eat their very own faces and it's nothing it was promised to be but sexism and misogyny from men that, no, don't 'become better' just cause they got what they wanted.)
Tradwife seems more like the logical current iteration of European Fascism and that its always been a tenet in "Western Democracies" to justify Exploitation
No it really really does not. If you think fascism has litearlly anything to do with "tradwife" (and this is coming from a former nazi/fascist/third positionist) then you just don't know as much as you think you do. Try venturing outside of niche biased circles and interact with more people, perhaps those who actually hold the beliefs you criticize, to see if the way they are represented on here is actually how they are in reality. This isn't defending them in any way, and if you think it is, you're clearly a child. This is simply to say that personal experience and actual interactions with those we disagree with will go a long way in revealing what is actually true, rather than simply taking people's words for it online who have never been one themselves, nor have they ever regularly interacted with them in a legitimate intellectually honest basis.
I don't think they're necessarily saying the tradwife subculture is the same as fascism, but that the reasons women may be drawn the tradwife subculture can be explained by looking at why they were drawn to fascism, since a major component of both movements is the complete rejection of feminism in favour of a conservative, restrictive social role. It would seem counterintuitive for a person to genuinely want to give up their voice and become entirely submissive to another person indefinitely, but through looking at historic parallels, we can find out why a tradwife might find this restrictive life path appealing. Does that make sense?
So everything in this video was amazing. I was especially blown away by the arsonist segment because like... even the camera angles were so deliberate and chilling, like the arsonist is saying all of this stuff but the frame keeps putting him in a more and more dominant position like you're forced to look up at him, like you're kneeling in front of him by accepting what he says about you being a "strong woman". Thanks to the entire Philosophy Tube team for putting out such stellar work!
im a black trans woman in the USA. what you said about sexism towards black women is also coming from a much harsher place. Because of our close attachment to religon, black men treat our women like dogs. 14:51 This line hits so close to home. My mother is unable to work due to disability and relies on my father to provide for the family and her disability benefits. Now in Canada (at least in Ontario) you collect benefits as an individual, but that money has to go somewhere, and in our case, it's the shared bank account my parents set up when they got married. This made me realize that if my father was abusive (he is not at all and I love him dearly) my mother would be financially unable to leave and live anywhere but the street. Power inequality is a scary thing to live with.
She has access to the bank account, so she could transfer all the money to a private bank account in one day. No law forbids that but yes it is still dangerous.
So let me get this straight. You are complaining that there is inequality that your mother doesnt have the chance to transfer all the money that he has made on his own to her bank account while his wife did not contribute financially? What about the inequality that your father faces, where hes the only one forced to work, rain or shine? F@#$ him right.
@@Masanumi Or open an account. Incredibly enough, sometimes individuals lack the required skills and aptitudes to manage something you or I might take for granted.
In the U.S., queer people were considered "security risks" until at least the 1990's and could not get security clearance in government work. Then in 1995 President Clinton signed an executive order that banned discrimination based on sexual orientation in the granting of security clearances. However, I have a friend that works for an engineering company that does government contract that require employees to obtain security clearances. There appears to be a loophole, as they are still able to deny security clearances to queer people who aren't "out", claiming this makes them vulnerable to blackmail. Of course, queer folk who are "out" tend not to get hired there in the first place, as most people working in engineering are conservative and thus homophobic and invent other excuses not to hire them when interviewing. So it's a Catch-22. If you're "out", you quite simply don't get hired over some convenient arbitrary reason. If you're closeted, you lose your security clearance and thus your job if you're later discovered to be queer.
That bites so hard. The only reasons it doesn’t surprise me are that transphobia is so open in the US and that in the 80s my parents had to assure the powers that be that their living together and having a relationship while not being married to each other, which everyone they worked with knew about, wasn’t something they could be blackmailed with to keep their security clearances.

I love how charismatic the Arsonist is, how the character talks, flirts, pretends to care about your thoughts and then how the conversation is steered in such subtle ways. Masterful manipulation, a terrifying character. Brilliant work Abigail!

Easily her most terrifying character
I've kinda missed the arsonist. I had made peace with the fact that Abi had retired him following her transition, but seeing his return both makes me happy and absolutely terrified; he chills my blood more than any other fictional villain... Partly because I feel like I wouldn't be able to notice the strings he's pulling if I ever met him myself... It's an amazingly well-written villain she's created, and I'm apprehensively here for it...

i find it astounding that those who plagiarize weren't already terrified of an outcome like James's. like when you so lazily copy past info that you found from a public source that anyone could easily point out not only says alot of those people's egos but how little they think of the audience they're presenting the information too. you're not going to fact check me you're too lazy yourselves. it is and can be daunting to spent some hours searching and finding multiple sources or accounts on a particular topic but now after all this i think everyone's a bit more enclined to do their due diligence.
@@Onyx-_-liquor They're not terrified because they know there are almost zero consequences. Illumi's plagiarism came out ages ago, as well as her (in my opinion) more egregious and frequent factual errors (see examples in Hbomberguy's video).

The "us" was always a smaller group than expected.

WOW
Kudos to Abi for feeling able to bring him back - it was utterly compelling. @@mikkelens there are definitely those types of videos, the ones I've been seeing are really at the barest level of "does your partner care about you?" One video that I'm thinking of is posing to the viewer the question of if they asked their partner to bring them an orange as a snack, would they peal it? While I think that there's some neurodivergent complexity here that we're going to excuse, the idea is that the average partner, that when their partner would ask that of them, would think that "oh hey, my partner wants this is a snack, that means it would be easier for them/more preferential for the orange to be peeled, I'll do that."
In the same vein, I've seen a lot of cis couples "modelling" healthy relationships.
@@lazo9972 i’m not on tiktok so i haven’t seen the tone of those videos, but that baffles me a little bit, i’ll admit. it seems like a lot of mind game expectations on both parties rather than just… communicating? in those scenarios, my first instinct would be to poke my head into my loved one’s room and go “hey, want me to peel that orange?” or give them a call or text and go “hey, no pumpkin on the list, do we have some at home already?”

"but because I'm a woman I'm not allowed to feel angry, so I just say I'm feeling sad"
damn if this isn't the realest depiction of the female experience I stg
People can cite the underlying ideas of toxic masculinity, but I wonder what constitutes toxic femininity. The need to be seen as attractive comes to mind-things like body image, but also the tight policing of sexual desire. You must look attractive, but you must not look like you're trying to be attractive. This balancing act of almost contradicting ideals seems to be a common theme.
@quinsutton7097 Oh exactly.

This is all we can do."
Things did not change: once I got to 9th grade, I, too, warned 5th graders about this monster.

The description fits perfectly. Heroes are the people that do great work and then are not rewarded for it other than with a bit of token recognition. You don't want to be a hero.
@@vulcwenthey only say heroes because saying “martyrs” tends to give the game away
it turned out that 'essential worker' actually meant 'disposable worker'

"We got ours, let's HELP you"
As a long time fan, seeing the arsonist again legitimately made me cry, I'm so thrilled that Abi feels comfortable in the male drag of her old character.
Im so happy about all your success Abi, keep going!
32:26 I've been saying for a while now that "feminism" is just ACKNOWLEDGING REALITY! It's good to hear from someone else that the opposite of feminism is to "ignore reality"! 🤣
This was especially powerful to me. The gaslighting is so real.
Also, fuck the guy who ripped your work off, Karma will come for him :\
Abigail making dictionary jokes in every essay is my favourite part of the video
@@catherineelmore2004 Yeah, she does a great job with this character. Very clever.
The only reason I didn't need to cover myself is I'm not British.
@@fairycat23 me neither, actually
I' m a girl about to go down an insanely male-dominated career path, but people like you give me hope that it will be alright. You are insanely empowering, thank you for every video!
The women and facism part basically explains nowadays "tradwife" phenomenon. This video is a work of art!
@@OllamhDrab exactly!
I'm scared to watch the video at this point. I just read the transcript. Idk if I can handle the return of the arsonist.
im a black trans woman in the USA. what you said about sexism towards black women is also coming from a much harsher place. Because of our close attachment to religon, black men treat our women like dogs. And for trans women? we break this stereotype of the hypermasculine black man so they become so embarrassed of us that it costs us our lives regularly. Femininity is so frowned upon in our community that it can cost some women their lives. its wild how toxic this bs gets
Ali Abdaal recommended this video in this weekly email newsletter!!! It was really nice, as a relatively long term viewer, to see you get that recognition :DD This was an amazingly researched video essay and hopefully more people will give it the watch it deserves
Once again, it seems that Tommy Tallarico has crossed paths with a proeminent youtuber. I'm sure his mother is still really proud of him
Tommy Tallarico is the Arsonist actually
was not expecting this here, but maybe I should've
@@flawedmindI‘m sorry for asking but I’m really trying to understand what you wrote and have so many questions… Were your parents queer? Applying for a job at a government office and had to explain why did they live together without being married, even though everyone knew about it? Or was it any other reason they tried to obtain the clearance or any reason they couldn’t at first?
@@Venvaneless (eta: Shortest version I can think of: The blackmail concerns for security clearances are real, but the blackmail issue shouldn’t be an excuse to discriminate.)
I’m mostly trying to say that trans people are definitely hit hard, and that it’s even more overt now, but that security clearance stuff is kind of just baseline crappy in general, too. My mother doesn’t understand gender, though, doesn’t see themself/herself as belonging in a gender, and doesn’t have pronoun preferences.
(eta: Basically, security clearance requirements seem…ridiculously rigid?…and the blackmail thing has been a thing for years. It’s still no excuse to discriminate, even though blackmail is a security clearance concern. If someone is out and it wasn’t discrimination, there would be no problem with the clearances.)
