4 Degrees of Freedom (4 DOF) Mechanical Acrylic Robot Manipulator Kit - Arduino, Servo and Joysticks

  • This is a quick video demonstration of a simple 4 degrees of freedom robot manipulator kit.
    The robot is controlled by an Arduino and can accept controls directly from a simple dual-joystick shield comprising a pair of simple potentiometer-based input controllers. To control the arm the kit uses four of the common SG90 servomotors, which can be driven directly from the Arduino.
    Depending on the code (or sketch) loaded on to the Arduino various programmable options are available including recording actions for later playback or being driven directly by a computer over the serial connection.
    Here, the robot is being directly manipulated using the dual-joystick in real time to sequentially move and reposition two metal radiator (or bleed screw) keys.
    For this robot I created a short extension cable for the claw motor, to slightly improve the range of the manipulator. Additionally, the claw motor has been replaced with a replacement servo motor due to overly stiff gearing on the supplied motor leading to overheating. It is important to calibrate the range of the motors to avoid the servos being overloaded and burning out.
    The kits are available in a variety of configurations.This video demonstrates the complete kit which is supplied with the required acrylic parts, servos, and Arduino clone, and "rocker" joystick shield. This configuration can be purchased from AliExpress for as little as £10.

    Hmm, interesting! I am wondering if we could use one of these to set up a nice Towers of Hanoi demo for the Science Fair trainer :D If we only had some more memory... I guess the controlling Arduino would need to be programmed to execute "macros" based on digital inputs received from the trainer, so that the trainer wouldn't have to do the fine-level motor controls. This might be more practical with a more powerful trainer, i.e., the Microtronic or the Kosmos CP1. Cheers!
