@@therayvalenzuela8885 : Vastly underrated and often hated by (White) people over thirty-five. HOWEVER, for millennials of all hues, Oakland is to the 2020s what Haight Ashbury was to the youth of the 1960s.
      And the world press notices.
Nearly ten years ago, the NYTimes ran an article that became a meme for the "new" Oakland, particular for the millennials: "Brooklyn by the Bay." A flood of articles by the world's media of record--NPR, Le Monde (France), UK Express (Britain), UK Guardian (Britain), UK Telegraph (Britain), La Libération (France), Boston Globe, LATimes, National Geographic, etc.--have all run extensive stories on Oakland's rise as THE unquestioned bohemian, hipster, multiracial "creative" city by the Bay (my San Francisco, once THE capital of activist, diverse, bohemian cities in America without question is now merely rich , all White, soulless).
And in fact the NYTimes and National Geographic have listed Oakland in their prestigious annual Top Cities of the World to Visit, largely based on Oakland's (a) hot , innovative culinary scene (b)multiracial arts and events (c) bohemian-activist vibe (d) quirky mix of upscale gentrified gloss, gritty old twentieth century industrial-working-class toughness, fey and multiracial hipster whimsy (Temescal, once a a very sketch nabe is now featured in National Geographic and Paltrow's GOOP for all of the arty boutiques, restaurants, and "artisanal" breweries), and of course very old money of the wealthy Oakland Hills.
So, yes, among older generations, Oakland is vastly underrated. To younger generations, the two American urban areas that are "IT" are Brooklyn of NYC ("Oakland on the Hudson") and Oakland ("Brooklyn by the Bay"):

Cece : if you need an explanation at this point, you really know not very much about Oakland, its history, its mid-century crash and burn, its African-American political, cultural, social leadership that successfully led a decades-long block-block fight to save and restore the city, a campaign that over the past ten or fifteen years has bore real fruit. Your defining Oakland by one aspect reveals more about your prejudices and privileges than it does anything about The Town. And by the way, as an Ivy-educated biracial ( Northern English-Latinx), I DON’T respond to commands by those who are neither my professors nor my directors who sign my paychecks. Who would? Rethink your display of self-privilege and entitlement: it’s akin to the Trumpers’

I love the look and feel of Oakland. The history is there you can feel it in the shops and houses and offices. But sadly it has a run down feel to it. If you are White or Asian it is not a good place to live. Lots of crime and polar bear hunting

KongSunWu....What is " Polar Bear Hunting"? Never heard that expression during the 4 years I lived there from 1987-1991 when I was in the Army stationed at the old Oakland Army Base. Last time I visited was in 2003. I now live in a small town in Kentucky, next to Ft. Knox.
