Hi Emily, I remember a few years ago, there was a mention of the sand getting moved around, especially when there were big storms. Maybe this is what you are encountering when you talk about going back to spots you have already dredged at one time or another. Also remember your equipment has been vastly improved from when you first started which can also make a difference in you dredging abilities. Stay safe and we hope you reach your goals.
Maybe it is! We speculate about that all the time but it's hard to know. Equipment matters most behind the crew. More is more! It's a world of difference from where we started.

Not finding gold is as important as sucking it up. Claim 14 has been worked and the only way to map the bottom is checking holes. Good work on the improvements on the boat!
Truth! You can be as "strategic" as you want but the only thing to do really is keep poking holes and follow the yellow brick road. It's a simple business in that way
Just seeing the raw filming from you all just shows how much work truly goes into the mining. Day in day out battles is amazing to see and everything you all achieve is well deserved and hard earned… looking forward to next week and a big clean up!!

Great to get our weekly dose of Nome diving. There was a rather impressive shot at the beginning with the shipping barge, it's crazy that you have to wait until June to actually ship equipment and goods in, everyone needs to plan way ahead. Concerning planning: do you have another potential area lined up, when 14 finally runs dry? Even with storms exposing deposits and all, I imagine at some point it's out.

Emily, when my husband worked his 6" dredge, he welded a cross pattern over the nozzle. It worked real well with very few clogs. Try it, you'll like it.

A little advice from a lot of experience. Thousands of hours submersible in mining and construction. Mix 50/50 isopropyl alcohol and white vinegar in a dropper bottle. Cpl drops each ear before you go in and when you get out.
Effectively prevents ear infections.

With 80 hrs of gold in your sluice box, is security a worry when leaving the dredge ? Or do you just sleep in it. 😉
Good question! We've been cleaning it consistently so there's not 80 full hours in there otherwise I'd be more nervous. In general there haven't been issues with people pulling boxes apart in Nome and stealing gold. It's a long process, the port is a public place (with cameras), and it's a small town. And a lot of the miners are the types of guys you really wouldn't want to cross...

if nothing went wrong then i wouldnt be watching. thats when the lessons begin. i was always the most impressed with zekes mechanical ability and bush fixes. . would it be fair to say you gleaned alot of skills form him? youre a very solid dredge captain.

Thank you so much! Summer 2023 wasn't filmed at all so all you'll see from that season is on my channel here. They just released a new one in the fall on Discovery though from 2022 summer that should be available to watch somewhere!

Thanks! Sure will be. Not yet because I think inflation is making the business even more expensive in some ways :( probably not that much more lucrative than it was a couple years ago even with gold over $2k. Would probably see another rush at $3k is my guess. $2,500 still feels a little low to get lots of people to turn out

Good question! Everyone works shallow because it doesn't pay to work deep. Doesn't always matter how much gold there is - it matters how fast you can get it
Do you/can you turn the hose suction off when you’re clearing the rock jams? Seemed like water was still going in so I was curious about your approach.

We usually do! Sometimes can clear the flare with a stick when the motor's on idle. Thank you - can't wait to show you!

Not at the moment! Just too expensive to ship and every new country means new regulations to deal with. But we're working on some interesting projects now that might let that happen!

Emily. You are putting out a quality show. Question. I want to know if your masks are form fitted to each diver. Like the masks we have to wear in the gold mills on land. I worked in a cyanide leach mill in Nevada. I know you don't have the canisters but the mask itself is form fitted to our face and no facial hair. Even moustaches tightly trimmed. That's my question. Thanks! We have 2 now. Funny you should ask this because we have some issues with that coming up in the next few weeks. Most everyone can wear the standard mask. It's positive pressure so it's forgiving if it's not a perfect fit. But the guys don't leak air.

Thank you! It's an interesting ideas but it's still faster for the divers to poke a hole and take a look. Plus metal detectors don't always pick up the fine gold - and you'd be chasing hot rocks all day

Make a check list to go over BEFORE anyone goes under water, much like a pilot's check list just before take off and read it off to each other like pilot's do with confirmation. You'll be glad you did.

Good question! BSG is shooting ice season right now it'll be back on the air. Just took 2023 off. I don't think anyone else filmed their own thing last year so it's just us!

Hey. I have a question. The gold that is at a particular spot, is that it. Or does the current move gold around.
Another great edit and video. Since one of your crew members is going home and you said you want to be sure he has plenty of gold to take home, can you explain generally how the pay on dredges work? I’m sure the operation gets its share first but then how do you determine how much a crew member gets since you don’t do full cleanups every day and people dive for different amounts of time depending on all sorts of factors so there is no way to know how much a particular person recovers on any given dive. Is it assumed that the amount of gold per hour diving is the same since they are all down there working? And what about the time spent tendering? Just curious 😀
Good question! We split the take between the boat and the divers. Divers split their share by hours usually. Sometimes an equal split if they had similar time underwater or one shift got particularly bad run because of weather/breakdowns. Tendering's part of the job

How many gold mining land operations are there between Nome and inland to that mountain range south of Marys Igloo? Seems like gold would be good all throughout area but hard to get to.
Dozens? I'm not sure! The hot spots are very concentrated for the most part
I would head back to places on the lease that didnt do well, like places u tried pre big storm 22 maybe the gold got shifted to these areas after the storm,like maybe sandy areas and places with a little more overburden but are easy to move wityh your 10 inch.

Damn seasickness is miserable. I went dolphin watching with work and because the boat was rotating to find the dolphins, sometimes we were hitting the waves head on, sometimes sideways, and sometimes on an angle, so the rocking was coming from all angles and I couldn’t handle it. I went downstairs into the head and then I was fine as there was no windows, so I stayed there a while and came up and I was fine, but damn it was horrible prior to that. My wife was just sitting there not bothered by it. I think it’s a control thing, as stupid as it sounds, because in my mind I’m thinking we should be turning to face into the waves, but we weren’t doing that and I was getting annoyed that we weren’t doing what I expected us to do. I dunno, I’m similar when I’m a passenger in the car because I like to drive and I think I’m a good driver, someone else’s driving will always annoy me because they will do something differently to how I would do it and I want to scream lol. I realise I’m probably a control freak but I’m happy like that.

@@TheEmilyRiedel YES! In a car you can pull over, on a boat you’ve got nowhere to run! The funny thing is, prior to this boat cruise, I had been not scared, but let’s say not confident on boats. I don’t know why, put me into a race car and I will drive that thing until the wheels fall off and not flinch, but on a boat I’d always been a wuss. Anyway I booked our tickets and as I’m walking down the dock I legitimately started freaking out, but I was a 3IC and worked with adults with disabilities, so I had to suck it up and get on. Now, fortunately we were on a lovely new-ish catamaran. As we sailed out, we passed the other boat we were meant to be on, a 100yo ferry with a list and a top speed of about 6 knots. So I was happy in that regard but yeah, it got pretty rough.

Nope! They're filming ice now. Just took a year off

ahh sounds like yall got a lease on a good claim out there with all that work on it and it keeps on producing. are the richest claims owned by people that dont work them or are yall on the hotest ground there? interesting how gold collects in specific areas, I'm sure yall have been there long enough to have that whole area mapped out though and know where to go for the most part. great vid! thanks for sharing, hope yall got some great rest during the storm and good work done on land. look forward to more vids
