I want to thank you so much for providing such excellent content. My TH-cam algorithm suggested this channel to me and boy was it dead on! No annoying music, no commentary, subtle humor and therapeutic disassembly and reassembly of vintage and antique tools. Doesn't get any better than that, honestly.
Just started rewatching some of your older videos like this one and I've forgotten how clean that the worlds most flammable workbench started. Keep up the great work.
Wow. Where did we lose our way and go from being Producers of amazing tools like this to being Buyers of whatever passes for a Tool nowadays? 60s or 70s, I was a teen in the 70s. Everything did seem a lot more 'metallic and durable' back in those days. Thanks for doing these videos, Doc. You add years to the life of everyone who views and appreciates what you are doing.
It's a nice restoration but it's easy to see why this concept didn't catch on: it can't be used in a confined space due to CO and the vibrations prevent it from drilling concentric circles (look at the runout when he drills a test piece).
@@tresmondlaw1955 I was like, why htr doing a crap resto, then the drill test showed that was all the effort it was worth. took me a minute to get the joke.
How cool. I’ve never heard of a gas-powered hand drill, and the more I look at this one, the more it seems like a bad idea, but I like the fact that somebody made one, and that I got to see it, if only in a video
I couldn't believe when I saw this at Jimmy's shop that they actually made something like this. You were the first person that popped into my head, then Jimmy went on to explain he was sending this to you. Great job on this and all the tools/machines you work on!
I love your videos, but this was a little off. I don't understand why you took the mostly intact yellow paint off, only to paint it white and then make it look like crap.
Andrew Suderman console yourself with this thought: by "making it look like crap" he's taken one more gas powered drill out of the pristine antiques marketplace. This drives up the value of your own collection of mint condition gas powered drills. If it's over 200 years old fetishizing original paint is a great idea. If it's consumer tools from 40 years ago, not so much.
Seth Bracken it's doesn't matter to me if it is the original paint but what does is him giving it that God awful name and sticker on top of a horrible paint job.
Both youse guys produce very entertaining and informative vids. I keep a smallish vial of jelousness in my cabinet of curiosities which I add to when finished watching. Sigh. Thanks for sharing your effort and talent. Good on you for sending him a project. Really generous.
For some reason this had to be the coolest little invention I had ever seen. I am very jealous of your talent as I was never taught any mechanic skills. Awesome video!
No, it was a lousy job. Not even close to a restoration, more like a "rustoration" or a resurrection just to see it work for 2 minutes. Then he used his lousy stenciling as an excuse to make it look authentic. It's just bad work.
You've really honed your talent over the last four years. I've mostly watched your newer videos. I was surprised by the this finished product vs the more recent restorations you've done.
I've read some of the comments about this not being up to your usual standards, but I also read the description first. While it may not be your "norm" it achieved exactly the look you were going for, and in the end that is what matters most. Excellent job!! You keep doing what you do and we will GLADLY keep watching you do it.
Shop Dog: Where can you get a battery powered drill that will drill a 1 3/4 inch hole through an 18x18 inch timber. That's what these type of things (not this one obviously) were made for.
It's awesome that there's someone out there doing things like this and taking the time to share it. I think it's a bit of a bummer (but unsurprising) that there are so many complaints. Such is life on TH-cam, I suppose. I enjoyed this (and other videos of yours) quite a bit. Thanks :-)
Awesome job on making the paint look worn. When you were putting on the gas tank I was like "ah that sucks the paint wasn't cured and he scraped it up" but then I was like "wait a minute. This dude usually has a plan." Great homage to the Diresta tool Anti-Branding.
I liked everything except for the stencil and over spray.. all the nice work went away :( Good video though I love all your videos thanks for sharing!!
Nice one. But how come you stopped disassembling everything? No piston/con-rod/crankshaft/head/exhaust/intake cleaning? And that chuck needs something.. is a little wobbly. The arbor is bent, or the jaws are misaligned, or something. And no inspection on the gearbox.. must have some gritty shmoo in there.
This one was more of a quick job, just to get it running. I didn't want to open up the gearbox as I wasn't confident I wouldn't damage the gasket doing that, and they are hard to find! I really want to open it though...

Great job! You def *"DIRESTA'ed"* it. For all the people asking, "Why didn't you leave it yellow?" Jimmy paints all his tools white. This is Jimmy's drill, so it's painted white. (That should explain the *"DIRESTA"* too.)
That was a neat old tool before the "restoration". A little on the amateur side with the crude mechanic work and wood chisel paint scraping if you ask me. Not sure what the ultrasonic carb cleaning was about since the thing was only about 50% disassembled when it went in whatever that watery lookin bath was. Would like to have saved it myself. Guess that's just my thoughts on it. Kinda wish I hadn't watched now :(
This is the first time when I totally do not agree with your restoration. Why didn't you change grease in the gearbox? Why did you repainted it? And why did you remove the original lable and painted this diresta shit?

It was cool and fun video but stripping the original yellow paint and painting it white was something I would not do. Another thing was the overspray at end was something I did not like where black paint got on the cap and fuel tank.
What a shame they suffered from carb problems . Thats a mighty handy tool . Even with the advent of battery hand drills i can see the advantages of gas .
I think you ruined the project in the last 3 minutes. Why give it new paint and than make it look used again? And why were you that sloppy at the logo and DIRESTA spray on?
I can't believe it. I never thought I'd ever see a gas powered drill. Then again, I guess we've always needed cordless drills. I'll stick to my Ryobi one+ tools, but wow. Never thought I'd see this. Now that I'm on this video, I see ads for gas powered drills on Home Depot.
I guess the best thing about making a video of the restoration is that you can just review everything to remember how to put it all back together again!
Hum... liked to see the tool working again, but as many, the sloppy paint job and logo overspray was a hard thing to watch. I know Jimmy paint his new tools white, so nobody would steal them, or at least this is why he started it, but still was awfull to see. At least if the job was well done, i'd say okay this time for special reasons. Would have made the box to match to help forget the ''crime'' :)
He doesn't paint the tools white so nobody would steal them u dumb fuck....lololol. He painted over the brand names of the tools because he wasn't getting any $$$$ from them as SPONSORS!!!!! Oh, sorry Dewalt, if you don't give me $$$ I will paint over your name!!! It's fucking pathetic and cuntish.
Thank you brother happy to see it come to life!

I love your channel. I have been a collector for a while and it's nice to see someone else preserving the history of the tools that built this country
it hurt me when he super glued that sticker to it

that overspray looks like it was done by a three year old
Nice, always a pleasure to watch you do your magic to the forgotten tools of the past! Good work
what a fucking mess, you should have left it looking original
DOES NOBODY. READ. THE FUCKING DESCRIPTION. ANYMORE.
+John Marston screw the description, he took a cool-looking tool and intentionally made it look like a piece of shit. Full stop.
Que increíble amigos, nunca había visto un taladro de gasolina. Saludos desde México.
That fucked it completely at 15:00
What a great tool! You sure do find them.
sometimes this guy has no idea how to restore things
From the examples that I've seen... it's not just 'sometimes' :-D

He must have been going trough a periode with personal problems while he did this video. Normally he does way better
What a cool little gas engine. Love it!
Hum... liked to see the tool working again, but as many, the sloppy paint job and logo overspray was a hard thing to watch.
Oh it's white so i dont see the logo deuh.... If you followed his video, he told people why he first did it...
hahahah i love the little jokes you put in your videos! this time it was right at the start and caught me off guard. keep it up man!
Thanks! Will do.
literally made it worse than before... terrible job ther folks.. so bad..
