- The Minecraft Survival Guide Season 3 continues in Minecraft 1.20!
This tutorial will show you how to build a Cobblestone generator and a Stone generator, starting with basic manual designs, then demonstrating two semi-automatic designs using redstone!
Cobble and stone generators are vital to challenge maps like Superflat Survival and Skyblock, allowing you to create infinite renewable stone. They're also a great idea if you don't want to deplete all the stone from the ground below you, but you still want loads of crafting ingredients, building materials, and blocks you can transform into something else!

I was today years old when Pix taught me that you can craft the decorative stone types…
Bro you have played mc for 10+ years and you didn't knew that...
That's cute😂
@@alphaphoenix00e no one is perfect. Lol
I probably knew it at some point, but my one brain cell decided it was more important to know the words to some song and deleted the info.
@@tnichols312 😂😂
diorite+quartz to granite makes no sense to me but its cool
I didn't start playing MC until the end of last year and even though I watched a ton of videos to learn about the game, none of them until now ever mentioned that and I never discovered it on my own.
Water logged mangrove roots, leaves etc placed one block away from the lava source will also create cobblestone and save you a little bit on the size required for your generator. Just cover the top so they don’t ignite.
As someone who plays Superflat Survival, this episode is great!
I remember bingeing almost every episode of TSG s.1 during the beginning of the pandemic, s.3 has been equally helpful and nostalgic. The callback to the mountain range/ski resort build compelled me to drop a comment and say thanks Pix for the years of good content
And for Bedrock players, you can waterlog a piston for an extremely compact generator!!
Thanks as always pix for all you do! I didn't know you could use the wall/observer trick from underneath, I'll have to update a few of my generators now!!
I tend to place cobble stone generators next to my spawner farms so I can use the time to generate something useful while waiting for mobs to funnel down in the killing chamber. Usually I use netherwart blocks in the back because they don't get easily mined by pickaxes. Not sure if another block would be better.
That sounds like a nice idea !! I am going to do the same thanks, try putting obsidian instead of netherwart block :)
I'll hazard a guess and go with obsidian
A Craftingbench also does the trick, it might catch fire, but does not actually burn and is also not easily mined with a pick
The best blocks for this is to use Wooden Door/Trapdoor.
If the catching fire (but not actually burning) bother you, you can go with the Nether woods.
If however, you are annoyed by either the door's small hit box or the fact that nearby redstone makes it open and close, the second best thing are crafting tables, chests and barrels.
But there's one thing even better. Making it so you don't even need a block in the first place.
If you make your generator's lava flow 5-wide before falling, and mine it from the side so all 5 blocks are in front of you, then no matter how fast your mining speed gets, you will always be either mining a stone block or swinging at nothing.
Needs a tiny bit of aiming so you don't accidentally remove a hopper below the stone, though.
@@andykod77 Obsidian is good for this, but only if you use an Iron Pickaxe or below. If you are using A Diamond or Netherite Pickaxe though, Efficiency and a Haste Beacon will stack and maybe allow you to break the block before the Stone regenerates.
If you use any Wooden Door/Trapdoor, or even a Crafting Table, Efficiency and Haste will never take effect, because they don't work when using the wrong tool.
I assume we will hear about basalt generators at some point as well, even though they are way less interesting, since they can "only" be used to create decorative blocks.
(These use blue ice instead of water and require the lava to flow on top of soul soil in order to convert into basalt The basalt can the be mined or blown up like the output of a stone generator.)
I think the more interesting thing about basalt generation is that you can make carefully crafted Nether flying machines that use this mechanic to build bridges across the lava oceans.
I would like to add that using a waterlogged stair will only require three blocks for a coble gen. Just make sure the large side of the stair is pointing to the lava source. Place a hopper under the center block you'll never lose your cobble to the lava again. I stand five blocks back from the cobble block and mine away - that way I break the cobble, but not the block behind it. The pickaxe just whiffs thin air until the next block forms. And also remember that moss changes stone to moss, but not cobble. I also discovered that the fastest way to make dirt from moss is to plant a giant spruce next to the patch of moss. When the spruce grows, it turns all the moss within a certain radius into podzol - harvest with a non-silk touch shovel to get lots of dirt with one tree (unlike an azalea which only makes one dirt at a time and usually takes several bone meal to grow.)
Yay! The next episode is going to be the industrial district! I can feel it in my toes!
Love to call out to Superflat!!! Would love to see a series on Superflat! I’m currently doing a hardcore series on it and even got a Diamond Beacon! Fun challenge!
This was very timely! I was just wondering about that piston circuit while rebuilding my stone generator in my skyblock world!
I always created the simple cobblestone generator to mine out cobblestone I needed for my starter house projects. While it's fairly good to simply go out caving and mine some stone from caves, it can't be done forever and I tend to get myself some renewable sources fairly quickly, even on a regular survival world. It's also very important to make renewable sources in multiplayer world, because the world doesn't belong just to you, it belongs to multiple people playing on the server, and you gotta keep the aesthetic of the world kinda intact for other players as well. That means you can't mine out every single block, which would make traversing the world and orientation in it very difficult (let's not turn the world into 2b2t spawn). So you'll eventually find yourself building some sort of cobblestone or stone generator to generate stone, which can be used for variety of purposes. You can use it to generate stone building blocks, or you can convert it to moss, which you want to harvest, or you want to add up on it to make a bonemeal farm, or you can turn it into dirt farm (bonemealing an azalea tree sapling will turn the moss block or pretty much any dirt block underneath it to rooted dirt, which you can harvest), or you can go one step further and make a mud farm, or go for the final stage and create a clay farm this way. From stone, you can create clay, following this pattern: stone → moss → dirt → mud → clay. It's really useful and you'll have an efficient way to make some products out of your farms which you can then sell for some diamonds.
For a text this long to make a point, you deserve a like ,,,👍
I actually switched to Java so I could play superflat survival! I used that exact cobblestone farm in it to build a lot of my structures, and your iron farm design from survival guide season 2 since it didn’t require me to dig a hole deeper than the world went. This might inspire me to try that again, it was a really fun challenge!
You can do it on bedrock
@@joshpasco6083 Not with structures enabled though, which isn't as interesting to play, in my opinion. I was doing a village transformation in it.
Minecraft Survival Guide S4: Superflat??? Perhaps a mini series?? :D
I saw a vid for a really clever trick in that you put a staircase facing away and waterlog the stairs and have lava flow into the back of the staircase and it still works, more compact too.
You can use leaves as well!
And they'll have the added benefit (Java only) to fully contain the water!
@donnanoble9772 are leaves flammable though?
Usually, yes!
But in this case, they are waterlogged, so they will not burn at all!
Im playing MC for allmost a year now. But never learned about that you can craft Andesite, Diorite and Granite out of cobble. LOL Still soooooo much new stuff to explore in this game. AMAZING
I always like to try and guess what the subject of each episode is only for pix to do an uno reverse lol.
Always good to have stone generators near by, comes in handy at every point in the game.
What was your guess?
@@henrychinaski8686 I was thinking either villager breeders or automatic crop farming.
Really enjoying these videos of the technical aspects; they're mechanics I'm often aware of and even use regularly you giving the "why" of it all is great.
This is amazing to see SG3. I was a follower all the way back in 2018 from the original survival guide series, update 13.0.0
I'm happy to wake up to this! Loving S3, thanks, buddy!
Survival Superflat challenge would be fun to watch you navigate 🧐 I would watch 😂
Love the mention to us Superflat players!
Awesome tutorial today. Love that I’m understanding more and more of the mechanics! Thanks so much. ❤❤
I don’t play much Xbox anymore but when I was younger I was a no life at call of duty and Minecraft at one point in my life. I can still remember when it came out on the Xbox, loading into a world and seeing a skeleton and creeper on my first night, idk why I remember that but I do. It was so fun back then. I want to get back into it. I’ve made so many memories on Xbox live I miss the good old days !
As always, a big thank you for the really good content! Almost 1 million subscribers... are you excited?
Great episode. Your explanation of why a stone generator is needed is incredible.
I went a little psycho on our family's survival server. I created a piston based cobble generator that creates a 10x10x12 cube of cobble.
Great video man!
Yay a friend recommend this to me, so glad i found it. Great video.
I have been binging this series n im sad im catching up lol
Used this series to get up to speed since i last played early in game development.
Thanks for the content
Great explanation!
Thanks a lot I learn about diorite and granit which I didn't know. BTW, good luck for the world cup :-)
Good news fellow Bedrock peeps!
The generators work the same way!!
On the other end, there are no structures in our superflat worlds, so purely vanilla, no cheats survival is not possible. But with a bonus chest, a lava source and a good understanding of game mechanics, you can reach the nether! For the though, you'll have to find another way to get the portal frames.
Currently playing skyblock and just used this to make a semi automatic stone/cobblestone farm
Great Episode, as usual!
There's 3 bits of info that I feel are missing that I feel would have been really easy to add smoothly in this episode, though.
1) If you want to place a block that won't break with your pickaxe in the back of your stone generator, your best bet is a Wooden Door/Trapdoor. No matter how much Efficiency/Haste you get stacked on, it will have no effect on a wooden type block. If the small hit box of the trapdoor bothers you though, using a Crafting Table, a Chest or a Barrel are good second choices.
2) Another alternative is to make the Lava source fall 5 blocks wide, and mine from the side. That way you can't mine the block behind, since it's out of range. (Unless you are playing from a phone or tablet)
3) Should have also covered the Basalt Generator, since those are almost the same thing. Just make the lava flow next to a Packed Ice Block instead of hitting a flowing water block.
We'll cover basalt generators in another episode, since they increase in output significantly once you have access to Haste with Beacons - but I'm also going to have lots of Basalt from clearing out the nearby delta for Nether Hub stuff, so I'm avoiding those mechanics since my world doesn't *need* them yet.
You need Blue Ice for basalt generators, and a Soul Soil block is also required.
@@Pixlriffs I didn't knew Blue Ice was mandatory to make Basalt. Makes sense that regular Ice won't work, but I genuinely thought Packed Ice was good enough. Thx for clearing that up.
As for the Soul Soil, I was certain I wrote that down, no clue what happened to half of my sentence. Maybe I accidentally deleted it when I tried to text format for clarity >.
The first seriess that was very long had a lot of builds and it was different. Still this is lovely and really good. ❤❤
Woow, I guess I have never been that early xD
Insomnia treating me good tonight, I'm up late enough to catch this
Basalt generator is the best for me such a great looking block
Especially in the nether since lava flows so fast there. Runs really fast
Havent tried that yet but i wil soon thanks for the tip. Base has been on a little hold getting materials for 4 beacons😂
i seem to be running into your upload schedule lately haha
This video reminded me of that time when BdoubleO100 made a fancy stone/cobblestone generator where you could switch which one it makes by pressing a button. It took him a long time to figure out the redstone. And the next episode he came back on his idea, that his little daughter suggested that he could’ve just made a stone generator and just simple switch to a fortune pickaxe if he wanted cobblestone 😂😂😂
I need ice generator, love your vids.
I am empathizing about the heat- my family lives in upstate New York near Lake Ontario, which is generally as temperate as the UK but recently my thermometer indicated 95 degrees Fahrenheit
Good golly, that is hot for that area
Meanwhile Arizona is just burning away
Nice episode, can’t wait for the heat wave to die. At some point can you make a superflat survival guide?
I was a bit surprised you didn’t bring up waterlogging roots or leaves for a cobble generator; it’s more compact and doesn’t have as high a risk of obsidionifying your lava
Anyone remember when he used to upload every week day in his first survival guide 5 years ago?
I used to upload every weekday at the start of this series too, it's just been a busy summer combined with my PC being gone for a month.
Daily uploads might resume if I can continue talking about smaller topics like this, but to make any genuine progress on building I'll need to space out some videos here and there.
Would have been good to show a Basalt Generator also. Not as versatile a block as stone but certainly still a good thing to know
I remember old pumpkin and melon farms that actually used the block itself to complete a redstone circuit to automate the process, as this was before observers were introduced to the game 🤓 makes me wonder if there's a similar design option for these farms, better suited for a skyblock world where quartz is much harder to acquire
Just a question about other series, are you going to make any more “New Life” videos? I’ve been looking forward to your take on the Create mod and the others in the pack.
I feel like you're really good at skyblock
I just set this up in my world except I put an additional row of pistons to make a 13x11 square of stone. I can just let the generator run for a while and then come back and mine it up when I'm ready.
I was playing on pocket but I enjoy watching your videos
Was not aware of crafting diorite granite and andesite. Mind is blown lmao
I feel your pain. I have just started secondary school.
Making a stone generator makes more sense than a cobblestone generator, even early game.
I never understood the need for a cobble stone generator lol. I mean when your first starting a world I guess it makes sense, but once you get at least iron you usually end up mining a ton of the stuff. I remember needing cobble stone when I started a new realm but once I got my diamond pick I started getting more cobble stone than I needed and ended up with about 10 double chests full of the stuff lol. I wish there was a deep slate cobble stone generator tho, I use it a ton in my builds cause it looks better than cobble and it doesn’t need to be smelted to get stone. It also still takes a bit longer to mine than cobble stone with efficiency IV.
hoping to see you play skyblock now
With all the lave you are using have you considered creating a lava generator with dripstone and cauldrons?
Whats ur thoughts on the new trades villagers snapshot that are coming ??
Given you can get infinite quartz from Piglin bartering. It’s a fun idea that you can infinitely generate Andesite, Diorite and Granite.
I could have sworn you built a stone farm that made a whole 12*12 square of stone, by having a line of pistons push the first line. But I can’t find it in either S2 or S3.
There wat to have it auto generate into a chest?
Pix! You missed a good chance to add Basalt Generators to this tutorial! D:
Blue Ice + Flowing Lava + Soul Soil = Basalt Generator
Who votes for a Superflat series after Pix finishes the survival guide? 🙏
Riffin on a Friday night
Hey pix!!
I have a totally unrelated question but im not aware whom to ask!!
So Instead of a single player world i play in a server that i host in my PC ( using official server.jar file of mojang ) meaning i need to run that batch file everytime and only then the server is active and i will join it using my local host IP .. ( i did this cuz its easier for friends to hop on ) .
I have built my iron farm in the spawn chunks of my world , so assuming that i keep my server running ( but im not actively logged on to the server) will my iron farm work.... ??
I know crops and other farms do not work cuz player presence is necessary , but iron farm doesn't rely on player being nearby!, also my auto smelter works fine !)
Seems.lile Mojag needs to apply the x8 mechanics to the y axis in the nether now that the over world have got so deep.
is it possible to enable cheats after world creation in java 1.18.2?
Ummm ... Is this a start of super flat survival series season 1 ...or maybe Skyblock
when tnt blows up stone it turns into cobblestone
I want a deep slate generator it is so slow to mine in the mines but I could afk at the generator
I wish deepslate was craftable through a combination of basalt and cobblestone.
That would lock the resource generation behind quite a bit of effort and progression, while also giving some value to the relatively complicated basalt gens.
Plus the crafting could work with cobble to produce cobbled deepslate (aka the only good deepslate) and with natural stone to produce natural deepslate.
Win-win!
What do you think of the villager overhaul that Mojang is working on? Will you start a brand new survival guide then or just carry on with this one? Because tons of mechanics are going to change forever now.
I made a stone generator and it also produces me cobble stone
Do you think pix will mind if I use his name in a book?
Doesn’t blowing up natural stone with TNT get you cobblestone though?
It doesn't
@@paulelderson934 Are you sure? I haven’t played in awhile but I thought that last time I tried it, it didn’t work and just gave me cobble. Has that been changed in a more recent update?
Sorry, but HOW can we convert moss into dirt?????
