During Mahanama's last match as a Test match referee, Channel 9 played a little highlights package of his career as a player. Lots of him playing beautiful little wrist shots and running between wickets....and Wasim Akram cracking him on the box twice in two balls.
22 leg byes in the Sri Lankan innings, and if you see the last two shots, particularly the last one, at first sight it seemed quite clear that Mahanama had flicked it. Umpires were very liberal in giving extras in general, and byes and leg byes in particular, in limited overs cricket in those days. There was very little accountability regarding umpiring decisions in those days, what if the some of the umpires were doing it out of spite against a certain batsman, stripping him of his legitimately scored runs. That's why I often say that in a sport like cricket which has been subjected to so many drastic changes in different eras, it's hard to accurately compare players who played in different eras.
How come the leg glance of the final shot of Mahanama was a leg bye😂...??? I think bat involved in that run. Well executed, winning by Mahanama after he had a horrible situation. Most of us still do not know Mahanama played the winning tuns of this match after he went to the pavilion...
He was brilliant on his day, but very inconsistent, only 4 half centuries in 39 innings. This, and his innings against Zimbabwe in the 1992 world cup, were probably his only significant performances. By the end of his career he was in competition with Jayasuriya, and realizing that he didn't stand a chance, he left for Bangladesh.

I was impressed that Mahanama came back to face Wasim after what happened.
Akshat Singh, was went wrong with Athula Samarasekera that he didn't play for Sri Lanka after wc 1992 & after the year of 1994, please let me know.

Ijaz very nervous batsman..always bad running and many run out bcz of him
Was this the Day that Mahanama got this continues injury? Was it Waseem who ruined his carrier.
He copped 2 deliveries right in the groin from Wasim Akram yes but I would hardly say it ruined his career
