The 6-Speed BMW Hatchback America’s Never Driven | 1M’s Alter Ego

  • Today I'm driving a forgotten gem from the mid-2000s BMW lineup. This is a 6-speed 2006 BMW 130i M-Sport, fresh off the boat from Japan. The 130i was never sold in North America and somehow fit perfectly in the shadow of the BMW 1M and E46 M3 at the time, casting itself into a forgotten history... until now. Under the hood is a 3.0L N52 N/A inline-6 putting down 261HP and 232lb/ft of torque to the rear wheels, a simple recipe that was almost made brilliant. Enjoy!

    Dunno how you can say the steering is light haha. Try an i30 or Corolla and you'll see how heavy the BMW steering is. Drove my friends i30 and was shocked how light the steering was compared to my 130i. Also there's way more grip on the 18"s over the 17"s. I went from those identical 17"s running Pirelli Cinturato to the 18"s on a set of Michelin PS4's and there's soooo much more grip.

    The N52 is well known at your side of the ocean I suppose (E90, E60 etc), however in the 130i it's a bit more lively because of:
    - Lighter flywheel
    - Shorter gearing
    - Different exhaust manifold
    Fun facts:
    At launch, it was the most powerfull straight-six engine under the hood of a BMW, apart from Motorsport models.
    Most suspension parts are shared with E9X platform, which means M3 parts are easy to install (wishbones, stabilizers, etc)
    Furthermore, together with E9X platform, it was the first model which could be specced with Performance parts by dealer.

    • @Bryan-ir1ex
      @Bryan-ir1ex 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Also this version of the n52 has a greater state of tune than the n52s found in US 328i, due to the three-stage intake manifold and less restrictive exhaust! 265ps

    • @BMWEiMSport
      @BMWEiMSport 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I am biased as hell of course but….. I do not fancy the hatchback design. If you get the euro spec E82 125i you get a better looking car with in principle the same hardware as a 130i. Three stage intake manifold as standard and with an ECU tune you basically match the 130i. Do some other mods and you surpass it. All the while having a car reminisicing the 2002, E30 and E46 setup and or design language.

    These cars are sweet, but silver colour does not do the justice to them. There is also a 3 door hatch that looks even better, also there is this special Cup front bumper that looks great or other M- performance OEM parts, like exhaust, M performance seats, Side stripe etc. specification makes or brakes these cars.

    Great video thank you. These are simply awesome cars, pretty rare here in the Uk but if you can find a nice example they’ll be a great investment (I’m a fan of the 3 door e81 personally) Im looking for one currently as I regret selling mine a few years ago

    identical to mine , I bought a couple of days ago .
    a lot of car for humble money , and best of all one boot badge swap and its a 120 , that makes a very low profile sleeper you ca leave in a car park and it will still be there when you get back .
    The turbo thing is grand , but theres no substitute for cc,s.

      Yeah if there's xenons but no headlight washers, it's more than likely from Japan.

    Testdrove a used one in Germany a feg years ago. All RWD enthusiasts may bash on me: It´s a great car, just for me lost against a Fiesta ST, mainly because of fuel cost (double US prices for here ) and potential repair costs. Also steering is less direct and although the 130i is really fast on it´s last 2000rpm, but in the mid range it´s seriosly missing that Turbo Punch. As a daily, I want that torque down low and that is something even a BMW i6 NA canˋt provide

    • @ArmadaAsesino
      @ArmadaAsesino 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      ST is slower though. I've raced one in my 130i and was pulling away, but only barely. Might feel punchier in the midrange, but it's not any faster.

    • @porschelover04
      @porschelover04 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ArmadaAsesino Well, he wasn't really talking about races, he was moreso talking about the punchy feeling in 3rd/4th. If each driver was limited to shifting at 4000, the ST probably would've pulled on you.
