The driver did not actually jump. The truck was parked on the side of the road on an incline from the one attempting to drive up. What happened was that the driver had not applied the hand brakes properly and after some time they got disengaged whilst the driver was on the ground chatting with on-lookers.
I have been up this pass... you keep going up and up and up for hours....I was going to Mokhotlong... Im not surpriced that truck came down slipping... he hit brakes too late..slipery... the road is extremely steep...ths bigh trucks are heavy....You literally rise above 3000m above sea level...The other truck that had broken down, its engine couldnt take the load anymore...the area is steep and on this pass one keeps climbing and climbing non stop!
Mapolesa a bolila ruri! Bakhan'i + mapolesa ne ba tsoanetse ho emisa makoloi a Levelland a theoha ka holimo, ho ena le ho shebella Lori e mathateng ba sa e imolle! Ebe ke neng le tlo isa sepolesa thupellong ea maemo a tsohanyetso tseleng?
Well that’s what happens when you don’t follow road traffic rules and are in a hurry ....... go Africa go .... now the entire pass is blocked , no one can get passed ,
Runaway truck most likely total accident, brakes could have just been checked and still failed due to overheating. It happens, should have moved into the hill to the right of the camera though or tried some engine braking to resolve some of the speed(it won't stop it but it will pull some of the speed off).
I have been up this road, on my way to Mokhotlong...believe me, it is not a matter of ID.. this road is sooo steep and slippery especially in Winter during snow... you can clearly see that the truck driver had brakes on but it was too late...the truck is heavy and kept slipping. He did a good joy to try to turn and avoid headon collusion...And above all, he must be glad he is still alive. The roads are so high on the mauntain... any slip means death!
