Ray Moore's Final Show

- Ray Moore was one of that rare breed of broadcaster, loved both by the public and fellow broadcasters alike. Those that knew Ray described him to me as “a lovely, charming, funny, modest and generous man” and as having “a huge following within the Beeb”.
Starting his career as a television announcer he joined the Light Programme in 1966 on the weekly music show Pop North before moving down to London to join the continuity team. He was a regular voice on many Radio 1 and Radio 2 shows and one of the team who took it in turns to wake up the nation on Breakfast Special. Years later, as he liked to joke, he was still on the early shift: “what a wonderful progress in my career”.

Unmissable wasn't it. I have not listened for years.
Radio 2 nowadays is diabolical,it has gone downhill so fast ,now you have Zoe Ball, Vernon Kay, Scott Mills , Sara Cox,Jo Whitley,and now on the early morning show some Welsh guy olwin someone,end of radio 2.
He really was Gold. Possibly the greatest on radio. Especially on those pitch black mornings, pouring with rain & you had to go out to go to work....
I loved to hear the hand overs between shows, Ray to Terry then Terry to Jimmy Young! Brilliant and much missed, not forgetting John Dunn in the early evenings too!

Always listened to Ray while I was driving up to Cheadle Hulme from Stoke to start my parcel deliveries each day. He was a great companion especially on dark and wet mornings. Thank you Ray you were a star.
Great DJ. Loved him on radio 2. That station is now for skwarking deaf kids and jabbering djs. Bring back 80s radio 2 !!!
Ray was simply the best of men. Such a sad loss to broadcasting.

I was one of the technical operators who worked on Rays shows, as has been said , a lovely man with a lovely sense of humour.
I agree with everything that has been said about Ray as he was a wonderful man and the supreme broadcaster. I met him when I presented The Early Show for 2 weeks on Radio 2 over the Christmas and New Year period from 1984 into 1985. My programme was 4am until 6am and Ray followed from 6 onwards so we had one of those typical Radio 2 chats between presenters in the last hour of my slot. I'd been into his studio before that for a chat and he was very encouraging and complimentary. At that stage I didn't know when or if I was going to return to R2, but he very firmly said - "You'll be back" and he was correct as I presented The Early Show until 1988, sharing it with Dave Bussey. Then along came a change of management who decided to employ "celebrities" instead of broadcasters and so we both packed it in after a while as there was no future and nowwhere to on the station. Ah well. But my memoeries of Ray and indeed Terry Wogan will always be with me.

One of the first DJs on Radio 2, I believe. He had an original sense of humour that I appreciated.
This man was talented. Most music shows you wish the presenter would just shut up but this guy was funny and worth listening to. The music got in the way of his droll sense of humour
A great broadcaster, and sadly missed. Nice to turn the clock back, and apart from hearing Ray's dulcet tones again, also great hearing some of those jingles again! Takes me straight back!

I miss Ray Moore, Terry Wogan, Jimmy Young, John Dunn all the best talent gone now. I used to listen to Radio Two from 5.00 am till midday everyday and then John Dunn at night. Now i cant stand any of them as people here have said “ what happened”.

How I miss the mornings with tales of "Management" and travel dleays at Gatport Airwick. Ray Moore was one of a kind, bless him.
Lovely to hear that voice again. He kept me company back in the day on my early morning milk round. Sadly missed

Brings back very fond memories of my dear old dad sat drinking his morning tea chuckling away listening to this much missed broadcaster.
Ray Moore was a wonderful, natural broadcaster. I still miss him on the radio.
Can you imagine how he would have revelled with the instant interactions that email, text and Social Media would have offered?

What a great voice Ray possessed. He was with Radio two when it played good music. I loved the way he could turn his Liverpool accent on and off. He was a great friend of Colin Berry another Radio two colleague, who joined Radio two later, around 1973 from the 'pirate' broadcaster Radio Caroline. R.I.P. Ray.
Loved Ray Moore in the mornings talking about his pie and a pint. He was definitely one of a kind. Miss those days.
I loved listening to Ray without doubt the best radio presenter ever, I'm a big radio fan and nobody comes close to Ray
I forget if it was after Ray or John Dunne died but I remember Terry receiving another Radio Award & choking back tears while trying to retain his smiling irish charm he admitted "Why do you keep giving them to ME, cause I got the breakfast show?!"
From the days when radio 2 was a great station with great presenters, unlike today.
I still remember laughing out loud at Ray! I was a huge fan. Never to be bettered.
Brings back memories of when I was at school in the 1980's. I would get up for school just before 7:30 and my grandfather Bill would have the radio 2 on and Ray would be on, just before Terry Wogan took over, and I loved Terry as well. I don't listen to Radio 2 in the mornings now, not that these legends are gone. I have not listened to Radio two in the mornings since Terry left in December 2009.

Ray Conniff, “for all we know”, and Ray telling everyone to get their tape recorders ready. “Aah, the sound of a million tape recorders being switched off” . Ray was unique.

I remember him well, loved his show such a wit great start to the day. Just funny in a way not really understood today, and all without the modern day crutch of expletives. Genius .

We used to have broadcasters like this, John Dunn & Terry Wogan. Oozed class, humour & you could feel the warmth from them. Sadly we now have Vanessa Feltz, Zoe Ball et al who are horrendous. What has happened?

In the early 80s whilst living at the bottom of the snake pass in Glossop, I used to have to leave home to go over the tops at 5.30 am , Ray on the radio made me feel so warm and happy, and woke me up, he was full of life..loved the things he said about Johnny Roadhouse on Oxford road manchester

He was my most favourite broadcaster ever - I often listen to Ray Conniff’s ‘For all we know’ no one ,don’t listen to Radio 2 anymore

I used to listen to BBC Radio Kent. Before it's Breakfast Programme with Brian Faulkner started at 0630 (late 70's/early 80's), it used to transmit Radio 2 overnight. I used to wake up around 6 to Ray Moore -and loved his voice and the 0615 Pause for Thought -especially Thursdays when Frank Topping used to talk, with some really lovely music playing in the background. I was in my mid teens at the time.
In his book, which I think is called "Tomorrow is too Late", he says that he agreed with Management (his wife Alma and his affectionate term for her) that if the quality of his voice deteriorated noticeably then he would stop broadcasting. His wife always used to listen to the show and when he got home after this show, shew as in tears and just shook her head. He wanted to do a farewell but Radio 2 and Alma agreed it would be too emotional. so sad he went so young, but Ray, you shouldn't have smoked!
We all do things we shouldn't. Those days most people smoked.he was very unlucky even so.stil sadly missed.
I remember that morning when my alarm radio switched on and....no Ray Moore. I knew that something was horribly wrong. Remember the traffic reports? "There is a weight restriction at xxx Bridge, so remember that if you are riding a concrete bicycle or pushing a pram with more than three axles!". Where are the soothing voices on Rdio 2 who are not broadcasting by committe or speaking at 400 words per minute like Vaness F?

He famously smoked Capstan Full Strength and got mouth cancer. He woke me up on the radio alarm and even if it were dark and cold he would get me laughing out loud. I still miss that warm, conspiratorial voice. So sad.

As a gym employee I’m subjected to awful techno music on a daily basis, I regularly insert a burst of ‘ my Father had a rabbit’ . In my mind it always ends with dear old Ray saying’ I don’t know anymore’, the influence of R Moore continues deep into the Twenty Twenties

Today’s presenters haven’t a clue. This March ‘78 recording is more up to date than this mornings program.
Which I must add I don’t care for.

According to his book released later that year he had done an awards show voice over for BBC1 a few days before and decided to listen to his performance on this day as he thought his voice was starting to sound a little slurred so he tapped this radio show and read out a request for a lady called Alice Arrowsmith and that name sounded really slurred so he decided to call it a day having listened the show.. very sad
To think we now have Zoe Ball, Chris, am I shouting enough , Evans. Gentler more intelligent days
There will never be another Ray or Terry true professionals along with Jimmy Young does anybody listen to radio TRASH anymore I doubt many bother.
Ray's show signalled the end of those long security night shifts, forty years ago. Happy memories.

I don’t understand why radio 2 has gone more like radio 1. First terry finished and then Sarah and I stopped listening soon after when some bright spark thought Chris evans was radio 2 material...
Will just say Ken Bruce is still worth listening to, but the others??.......

Ray, John Dunne on Drivetime ( who made a point of never saying "goodbye" at the end of each show) , Terry, Hubert Gregg, (on "Wireless 2"), Brian Matthew on Round Midnight ....... Radio 2 was fantastic in the 80s. Sorry but it's utter trash now.
Unfortunately, Ray Moore's voice was too frightening for me. When I was growing up, he announced programmes and I turned off the sound as his voice was very deep and sinister!
