    There is an unspoken assumption here. Namely, that you are departing from Europe, probably UK. It hardly makes sense to leave Britain in summer, about the only time the weather is halfway decent; so take your foreign vacation in winter.
    If south and southeast Asia is your destination, two or three weeks makes little sense from UK, why not three or four months? Obviously because paid employment means you can't take indefinite leave. Also, a return flight to one of the three hubs (Singapore, Kuala Lumpur or Bangkok) is going to cost you at least Stg.500, so it just doesn't make economic sense for only three weeks. But if it were three months ... Malaysia issues a three-year "visa" on arrival. Nothing to pay, no form to fill out.
    So to all you in free-lance self employment, fill your boots. You only go round once, unless you're Buddhist.
