Sovol filament dryer box - it can dry two spools in same time

  • Filaments can absorb moisture from the air. PETG and Nylon are more sensitive filaments to this. With PETG user can notice some stringing if filament is not dry. Nylon is even more sensitive to humidity in air, and it must be dried on higher temperatures (above 70°C). Filaments can be dried in oven too but using dedicated filament dryers has more constant temperatures and they can be used during 3D printing process (keep filament dry during longer prints).

      In that early instructions I got, no, but since it has sealing along transparent plastic part, so filament can be stored inside too (when not drying), some opening is required for moisture to go out.

    Glad you picked up on that PSU. It's super lightweight and gets, I think, excessively hot. I bet if I crack it open, there's no heatsink in there. I used a PSU from a TV decoder and seems a lot cooler. It should be possible to use sound insulating foam on the sides (foil covered) to insulate the walls - I wonder about the heating element as it's directly on the base and that base gets really hot.

    Besides measuring the overall temperature, I'd suggest you additionally measure the temperature of airflow and see how precision control of these dryers. I found some dryers may emit too hot air and thus soften the bottom of filament, especially PLA.

  • @3dprintingcave778
    @3dprintingcave778 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    its a nice looking dryer but a shame it only goes to 50c at 50c that is really to low for petg to dry correctly and nylon needs 75c so they are way off here to bad i would have bought this dual dryer but it doesnt get hot enough if it wont get to 75c then its worthless to me, but you did a great job on the video as always

  • @yamyam60

    These filament dryers should all have vent holes at the top for the evaporated moisture to escape and larger more effective heaters to compensate and enable higher temperatures.

      I agree, only problem is that you can't use it during 3D printing (for longer prints). Another problem I noticed with my oven, is that it's temperature variates +/- 15°C, it may ruin the filament and spool sometime.

    • @MyTechFun
      @MyTechFun  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The best filament dryer for me is the one which is quiet but also has a fan and space for silica gel. Only for drying nylon I need Eibos filament dryer, all others can dry other material and keep nylon dry during 3D printing.

  • @karljay7473
    @karljay7473 ปีที่แล้ว

    What they'd really need is to know the outside humidity and bring in the lowest humidity air. This looks like a simple heater/fan in a sealed box, so it assumes that inside the box is less humidity than outside.
    The real test would be to take room humidity and room stored filament and then put it in there. I'm guessing that if you put the filament in an oven first, and fill the box with hot air, it would maintain the low humidity.
    I wonder if a simple container with a cheap hair dryer would do the same or better.

    • @MyTechFun
      @MyTechFun  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Drying has two main steps. 1st hi temp to force the humidity from inside to surface of filament. 2nd low humidity in dryer, so moisture evaporates from filament

    Haha, looks like they should have put that power brick inside the filament drybox to harvest the power a little more :D But on the other hand, i don't necessarily trust them if they did that?

    • @MyTechFun
      @MyTechFun  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Good thinking. Probably it belongs to different category if AC power goes into product..(harder to get some certificates)

    • @SianaGearz
      @SianaGearz 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MyTechFun Also you aren't exactly allowed to run those bricks in a hot box. You'd get a bare unit and validate/derate it as-needed. Then of course all kinds of potential safety concerns and cert/test considerations. Probably not of regulatory importance, but relevant to the device in question: what if someone accidentally loads the dehydrator with corrosive calcium chloride beads instead of the inert silica ones? Much safer in a Class III Appliance.

    Your experience with the sovol is not the same I had. My unit is identical but the heating element never goes higher than 50 deg C and the temperature inside the box is uneven . It takes hours to have at least 45c at the base of the box and it never reaches 40c at the top. So for me it is totally useless.

      Insulation. None on the market have insulation no doubt to keep them smaller and cheaper.
      Higher temp
      Spinning rollers. They have bearing spinning rollers.
      Two out holes in the front and top with plugs. you can do that yourself if you want.
      Bigger fan. The fan is plenty big enough for the job in hand.
      Faster speeds
      More time settings
      Price is too high. I got mine cheaper than some of the 1 reel holders by jaylo, esun or sunlu.
