Enjoy your life fishing bruddah!!! How's it. Watched a few of your fishing videos and enjoyed them. Like how your laid back, and enjoy going holo holo. Born and raised in Hawaii in 1960 growing up in our beach house at Ehukai Beach/Pipeline, I've been surfing and diving and freedive spearfishing and deep sea fishing most of my life in the Islands. I've been commercial fishing 40+ years from the Big island all the way up to midway island in the northwestern Hawaiian islands. Had several boats over the years, as a captain and owner operator. I moved to the big island, Kona, in 1980, after spending my summer's in kona fishing on my 13 ft. Boston whaler from 75-79 before I finished high school. In the early 80's, I got my dream small boat, it was the 9th Force 30 out of the mold, custom built for me to my specs in Hilo, so I could start full time commercial fishing . I didn't fish kona commercialy much, but based out of Honokohau harbor, and did regular 4-5 day and night long fishing trips to the rough trade winds exposed waters off the remote areas of the Big island where few people fished. It's been an incredible life living my dream, and seeing the most incredible wild places and fishing in places that are amazing, but extremely rough, which I loved!!!! I fished alone all the time, and loved the challenge of it and catching huge fish by myself!! Growing up deep sea fishing on Hawaiian sampans off Oahu, mostly trolling as a kid, my dream was to move to kona and fish commercialy full time, and to explore and go on fishing trips all around the big island, as it's got world class fishing and though Oahu is really good, the Big island was mecca, especially for big ahi fishing. I was a permit holder to commercial fish the leeward isles for many years on a few larger boats I've owned, and primarily was bottom fishing. It was incredible back in the day, and it must be full of so much fish now, it's likely as good or much better now since it's a sanctuary and there's been no fishing for decades now. We used to monitor it for the illegal foreign fishing vessels and let the coast guard know when we'd see them up there, and they'd send a C-130 out to bust them! I just fear that with no boats allowed to fish up there anymore, that there's foreign boats illegal fishing it and it's really too bad. With properly managed fishing by a few local Hawaiian boats and captains who don't hit the same spots too often, like we used to and carefully take and then let places rest, like the ancient Hawaiians did with the kapu system so they replenish and stay healthy, it could be safeguarded from foreign boats, and provide all that awesome eating fish like paka, onaga etc!!! Love to eat fish like paka and gindai etc, and give plenty away to the ohana and friends!!! I'm 64 now, so I'm pretty much retired from hardcore commercial fishing, but loved doing it being out at sea so much, when I was young and the decades I fished my Force 30 all over the big island especially were the best back then!!!! Just wanted to say Aloha to another local fisherman, as we see and do amazing things over the years spent doing what we love! God bless brah. D.L.
