In this piece Lecuona evokes the austerity and elegiac poetry of El Escorial, that quintessential window on the Spanish soul. I can see the oppressive gray stone facade of the monastery adorned with effigies of Biblical kings, I can hear the muted song of swallows in the surrounding woods. I can see the red, black, and gold tombs of Spanish Kings stacked on top on one another inside the cavernous interior; the gallery of monumental canvases by El Greco and Velasquez; Cellini's pale marble Christ languishing on a rough wood cross in a small chapel. I'm following in your foot steps. I'm through measure 132 of Malaguena and am guessing by late Fall, 2021 will be ready for Ante El Escorial. The other two that are pulling at me are Zambra and La Habanera. Continued great playing to you. All the best.
